  • Battle of Britain Cranwellians V7.6
RAF COLLEGE CRANWELL “Battle of Britain” A Tribute to the Cranwellian Few Version 7.7 dated 15 September 2020 created by IBM Steward 6GE In its electronic form, this document contains underlined, hypertext links to additional material, including alternative source data and archived video/audio clips. [To open these links in a separate browser tab and thus not lose your place in this e-document, press control+click (Windows) or command+click (Apple Mac) on the underlined word or image] Battle of Britain - the Cranwellian Contribution By the outbreak of war, the RAF College had been operating for nearly two decades. It had fully trained 36 Entries of Flight Cadets - two Entries beginning each year, and each lasting two years - with some 956 successful cadets still serving as officers in the RAF. 134 cadets from a further six pre-war entries had their training abruptly terminated, when the College suspended officer training as soon as war was declared. Some, like AH Humphrey (later MRAF Sir Andrew Humphrey) who had not completed officer training, were enlisted as airmen u/t pilots to undergo flying training at the Service Flying Training School (SFTS) set up at RAF Cranwell. Others transferred to the RAFVR. Research suggests that 145 Cranwellians (90 flight cadets, 54 SFTS trained pilots and a transferee to the RAFVR) took part in the Battle of Britain, 38 pilots sacrificing their lives in combat and forming our ‘Roll of Honour’ presented on the last page of this tribute. Each pilot carried out at least one authorised operational sortie with an eligible unit of the RAF in the Battle, between 0001hrs on 10th July and 2359 hrs on 31st October 1940, and thus qualified for the award of the Battle of Britain Clasp to the 1939-45 Star.

Issue 33 Page !1 Brave Report ! A Fairey Swordfish similar to those used by Torrens- Spence NI Naval air ace’s lead role in sinking three battleships Northern Ireland - Service in the Royal Navy - In Remembrance Issue 33 Page !2 On the night of 11/11/1940, Michael Torrens- Spence DSO DSC DFC (Gr), piloted one of the 21 Swordfish "Stringbag" aircraft from the carrier Illustrious which flew off in two waves to mount one of the most daring naval air raids ever attempted. Two squadrons of Fleet Air Arm (FAA) torpedo- bombers from the aircraft-carrier HMS Illustrious – Nos 815 and 819 – and two from HMS Eagle – Nos 813 and 824 – attacked the Italian fleet as it lay at anchor in Taranto harbour. A total of 21 Fairey Swordfish aircraft took part in the operation, codenamed Judgement. All the planes flew from Illustrious since Eagle had been damaged in action off Calabria. # # The Swordfish flew off in two waves and achieved complete surprise. Three battleships, Conte di Cavour, Caio Duilio and Italia (previously Littorio) were sunk at their moorings. This reduced the battleship strength of the Regia Marina (the Italian Royal Navy) by half. Conte di Cavour was never to see action again although both Caio Duilio and Italia were raised and repaired. The survivors were transferred to less exposed bases which also reduced their effectiveness. A heavy cruiser, Trento, and some Northern Ireland - Service in the Royal Navy - In Remembrance Issue 33 Page !3 ! Captain Michael Torrens-Spence destroyers were also damaged as was the oil storage depot.

  • 74035 Battle of Britain
Westminster Abbey A Service of Thanksgiving and Rededication on Battle of Britain Sunday th Sunday 16 September 2018 11.00 am HISTORICAL NOTE th This year marks the 78 anniversary of the Battle of Britain, the first decisive battle in history fought entirely in the air. Battle of Britain Sunday commemorates a dramatic turning point in both the Battle itself, and the history of the Second World War. The German objective in the summer of 1940 was to eliminate the Royal Air Force, both in the air and on the ground, in order to obtain air superiority in preparation for a potential seaborne and airborne invasion. Operating principally from airfields in France and Belgium, the Luftwaffe began their first heavy onslaught early in July 1940, directed against British shipping and the Channel ports. The intent behind this first phase of the battle was not only to sink shipping but also to draw the Royal Air Force into combat and wear down its th th strength. The second phase, from 8 to 18 August, consisted of intensive day operations against coastal radar stations and fighter airfields. The third phase began after a five-day lull due to poor weather, with attacks on fighter airfields in the London area and increased night attacks on Britain’s cities. th The first daylight assault on London was made on 7 September and marked the beginning of the fourth phase, lasting most of that month, during which the capital became the Luftwaffe’s primary target. These attacks, although serious in themselves, brought vital relief to the fighter airfields, which until that time had been under considerable th pressure.
