Hittinger The University of St. Thomas, Houston, TX, USA An Education to Counter the Culture of Death1 Abst ract: The author discusses the task of education for the lay faithful in their efforts to pro- mote a new culture of life and to challenge the culture of death. Following the lines of argument put forward by Pope John Paul II in the encyclical Evangelium Vitae, the author analyzes the ideological devices used by politicians and professors to make attacks upon life, such as relativ- ism, realism, an appeal to the majority, and an individualist notion of liberty and rights; these ideologies are criticized for their failure to properly understand human nature and the principles of political society. After clearing away the distortions of the truth about human freedom and life, the author briefly discusses some points put forward in the encyclical to appreciate the posi- tive task of education to build a new culture of life and to mobilize the consciences of fellow citizens to defend life. These tasks include rediscovering a contemplative attitude, appreciating the meaning and value of human sexuality and love, and developing a personalist philosophy for education as a whole. Key words: Gospel of Life, education, John Paul II, Church and State, relativism, human dig- nity, sacredness of life, Catholic universities, culture of life, culture of death All human beings ought to value every person for his or her uniqueness as a creature of God, called to be a brother or sister of Christ by reason of the Incarna- tion and the universal Redemption. For us, the sacred- ness of human life is based on these premises. And it is on these same premises that there is based our celebration of life—all human life. And so, we will stand up every time that hu- man life is threatened.2 Pope John Paul II, Washington, D.C. 1979 The Task of Education for the Lay Faithful for the “Areopagus” of Political Life Political life poses a special challenge to the Catholic Church in the post-Vatican II era due to a deep tension between the recognition of the rightful autonomy of the political sphere, the “separation” of Church and state on the one hand, and yet there is the bold call for the laity as participants in the kingly office of Christ to “inscribe the divine law in the earthly city.”3 Political participation, particularly the strong encouragement for the Catholic laity to participate in political affairs, is emphasized in Gaudium et Spes, part II chapter IV.4 Cardinal Ratzinger wrote in “Doctrinal Note on Some Questions Regarding the Participa- tion of Catholics in Political Life” that “the rightful autonomy of the political or civil sphere” is a value attained and recognized by the Catholic Church. Prior to Vatican II it had not been decisively attained nor fully recognized.5 And yet this understanding should not discourage Catholics from seeking to participate in political life in the full measure of their call to “inscribe” the divine law in the temporal city. From January 8th through February 25th, 2014, the Extraordinary General Chapter of the Legion of Christ took place in Rome. His Eminence, Cardinal Velasio De Paolis, CS, and his two counselors, Fr. Gianfranco Ghirlanda, SJ, and Fr. Agostino Montan, CSI, presided. Sixty- one chapter fathers participated, 19 ex officio and 42 elected by the nine territories of the congregation and the centers of Rome. 2. This Extraordinary General Chapter marks the end of the journey of in-depth revision that the congregation has travelled since the apostolic visitation, which took place during 2009- 2010, and the naming of a Pontifical Delegate in the summer of 2010. Our principal tasks in the Chapter, as Pope Benedict XVI1 indicated and as Pope Francis confirmed2, were to revise the Constitutions and to elect a new central government for the congregation. 3. In the first days, in light of the reports that the Pontifical Delegate and the pro-General Director submitted, we focused on analyzing the life of the Congregation since the ordinary General Chapter that took place in 2005. One of the outcomes of the intense exchange of ideas that took place in those days was the communiqué that the Chapter approved on January 20th, 2014, about the journey of renewal of the Congregation. Alexandru Ioan Cuza University awards the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to His Eminence Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, Prefect of the prestigious Roman Congregation “Pro Educatione Catholica”. Born in Poland, a country that we consider our neighbour and friend, on 11 October 1939, in Brodki, a village belonging to the Archdiocese of Poznan, he comes from a family blessed with four children. His parents, Stanislau and Giuseppina Stavinska, deeply religious people, brought him up in the spirit of love for God and respect for people. He studied philosophy and theology at the Archdiocesan Seminary in Poznan and then he was ordained priest on 27 May 1963. He spent his first years as a priest at Christ the King Parish in Poznan. 1 Starting with 1966, during the communist-atheist dictatorship period, he had the privilege to study canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he took his bachelor’s degree in 1968 and his doctoral degree in 1972 with the highest honour, summa cum laude , receiving a gold medal in accordance with the academic traditions of that time.

    The Holy See VISIT TO THE PONTIFICAL INSTITUTE FOR SACRED MUSIC ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI Via di Torre Rossa, Rome Saturday, 13 October 2007 Venerable Brothers in the Episcopate and in the Priesthood, Dear Professors and Students of the Pontifical Institute for Sacred Music, On the memorable day of 21 November 1985 my beloved Predecessor, Pope John Paul II, went to visit this "aedes Sancti Hieronymi de Urbe" where, since its foundation by Pope Pius XI in 1932, a privileged community of Benedictine monks has worked enthusiastically on the revision of the Vulgate Bible. It was then that the Pontifical Institute for Sacred Music moved here, complying with the Holy See's wishes, although it retained at its former headquarters in Palazzo dell'Apollinare, the Institute's historic Gregory XIII Hall, the Academic Hall or Aula Magna which still is, so to speak, the "sanctuary" where solemn academic events and concerts are held. The great organ which Madame Justine Ward gave Pius XI in 1932 has now been totally restored with the generous contribution of the Government of the "Generalitat de Catalunya". I am pleased to greet the Representatives of that Government who are present here. I have come with joy to the didactic centre of the Pontifical Institute for Sacred Music, which has been totally renovated. With my Visit I inaugurate and bless the impressive restoration work carried out in recent years at the initiative of the Holy See with the significant contribution of various benefactors, among whom stand out the "Fondazione Pro Musica e Arte Sacra", which has overseen the total restoration of the Library.

Central Commission for the Review of the Statutes of Regnum Christi Theme for Study and Reflection Number 5 Charism and History of Regnum Christi Goal To prepare ourselves for the revision of the statutes of the Regnum Christi Movement for the first and second degrees, we need to take into account the charism of Regnum Christi, since the statutes should serve precisely to guard and promote that charism. We are seeking to understand what is the charism of a movement and how it is lived, so that then we can go on to remember the fundamental characteristics of our own, remembering the spiritual experience we share and its history, as well as the approval and other indications of the authority of the Church. Outline A. The charism of a spiritual family: Charisms are special graces that the Holy Spirit grants to faithful Christians for the good of the Church and of its mission in the world. The discovery of the personal love of Christ, who calls us to share his mission, generates in us the desire to respond to him by doing our best to be authentic Christians and to make an active effort to introduce people to him so they will be transformed into his disciples.

    ONOMÀSTICA BIBLIOTECA TÈCNICA DE POLÍTICA LINGÜÍSTICA European Train Names: a Historic Outline* Christian Weyers DOI: 10.2436/15.8040.01.201 Abstract This paper gives a first overview of the onomastic category of train names, searches to classify the corpus and reviews different stages of their productivity. Apart from geographical names (toponyms, choronyms, compass directions) generally indicating points of origin and destination of the trains in question, a considerable number of personal names have entered this category, of classical literary authors, musicians and scientists, but also of many fictional or non-fictional characters taken from literature or legendary traditions. In some cases also certain symbolic attributes of these persons and finally even heraldic figures have given their names to trains. In terms of their functionality, train names originally were an indicator of exclusiveness and high grade of travel quality, but they developed gradually, as they dispersed over the European continent, into a rather unspecific, generalized appellation, also for regional and local trains. After two periods of prosperity after 1950, the privatisation of railway companies starting in the 1990s had again a very positive effect on the category, as the number of named trains initially reached a new record in this decade. ***** The first train names appeared in England in the 1860s in addition to names for steam locomotives, and on two different levels. The Special Scotch Express between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh (inaugurated in 1862) was called by the public The Flying Scotsman from the 1870s, but it succeeded as the official name not before 1924. Also the names of the German diesel trainsets Der Fliegende Hamburger and Der Fliegende Kölner were colloquial name creations, as were the Train Bleu and the Settebello operated from 1922 and 1953 but officially named in 1947 and 1958, respectively.
