Kellogg Company History Highlights 1894 An interruption in an experiment by brothers J.H. Kellogg and W.K. Kellogg at the Battle Creek Sanitarium leaves wheat exposed to the air overnight. Flattened by a roller, the exposed wheat results in the first flaked cereal. 1898 The corn flake is born through several of the Kellogg brothers’ experiments. 1906 Production of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes® begins at W.K. Kellogg’s newly formed Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flakes Company. 1907 “The Sweetheart of the Corn” is introduced. 1914 W.K. Kellogg begins worldwide expansion in Canada. 1916 Kellogg’s® All-Bran® introduced. 1922 Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flakes Company renamed Kellogg Company. Sales begin in Great Britain. 1924 Kellogg plant is built in Sydney, Australia. 1928 Rice Krispies® first appears on the market. 1930 Kellogg becomes the first company to print nutrition messages, recipes and product information on its packages. 1933 Snap! Crackle! Pop!® first appear in advertising for Rice Krispies®. 1942 Kellogg’s Raisin Bran® first available in stores. 1951 Founder W.K. Kellogg dies at age 91. Kellogg plant is built in Querétaro, Mexico. 1952 Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes® along with Tony the Tiger® appear on store shelves for the first time. 1954 Norman Rockwell commissioned to draw illustrations that appear on Corn Flakes® packages. 1963 Froot Loops® are introduced along with its spokescharacter, Toucan Sam®. Operations begin in Takasaki, Japan. 1964 Kellogg’s® Pop-Tarts® toaster pastries are introduced. 1972 Dig ’Em®, the frog character representative of Smacks®, is born. 1981 Kellogg’s® Nutri-Grain® becomes our first line of whole-grain flaked cereal. 1985 With Rice Krispies Treats®, Kellogg turns a popular recipe into a convenience food. 1986 New corporate headquarters opens in Battle Creek. 1994 Kellogg cereal plant opens near Bombay, India. 1997 Kellogg plant opens in Rayong, Thailand. 1999 Kellogg purchases Worthington Foods, maker of Morningstar Farms®, Worthington®, Loma Linda® and Natural Touch® products. 2000 Kellogg acquires Kashi Company, which produces all-natural foods. 2001 Kellogg acquires Keebler Foods Company, the second-leading cookie and cracker manufacturer in the United States. 2002 Global relationship formed between Kellogg and Disney. 2006 In 2006, Kellogg Company celebrated its 100th Anniversary. What began in 1906 with Kellogg’s Corn Flakes® has grown ‘beyond breakfast’ into a diverse food company.
