2012 Winning Presented Bill Hartack Memorial Award At Derby Restaurant near

Arcadia, California. … Today, Mario Gutierrez, the winning jockey aboard winner I’ll Have Another, received the Bill Hartack Memorial Award at The Derby Restaurant in Arcadia, California. The award recognizes the winning jockey of the Kentucky Derby, the first race of the prestigious Triple Crown Series. The Bill Hartack Foundation’s award honors the memory and lifetime achievements of Bill Hartack, one of only two jockeys to win the Kentucky Derby five times.

The partnership between the foundation and the derby restaurant celebrates and honors the skill and discipline of the jockey and raises philanthropic dollars for Thoroughbred racing related charities.

1 The Bill Hartack Charitable Foundation The Bill Hartack Charitable Foundation was established by the friends of the late Bill Hartack to honor the memory and lifetime achievements of the five-time Kentucky Derby winner. The foundation, through its philanthropic arm, annually contributes to Thoroughbred racing industry charities and recognizes the jockey who rides the Kentucky Derby winner each year with the Bill Hartack Memorial Award. Bill Hartack was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1959 at the early age of 27 and recognized as one of the most competitive and successful riders in Thoroughbred racing history.

Winners Foundation

Winners Foundation provides confidential substance abuse and counseling assistance and referral services to employees and /or family members of the California thoroughbred racing community. Winners Foundation has a large referral base and maintains close relationships with community based services such as anonymous twelve-step groups, city and county assistance agencies, detox centers, halfway houses and out-patient and in- patient hospital treatment programs. Honorees

Mario Gutierrez, was born in Veracruz Mexico, the son of a jockey. Gutierrez rode Quarter Horses in his native El Higo, Veracruz. By age 14, he was riding quarter horses for his father Mario Sr. in El Higo and Mexico City. In 2006, he was discovered by thoroughbred owner Glen Todd and horse trainer Troy Taylor, and they convinced Mario to move to Vancouver, Canada where he began riding at Hastings Racecourse. He won riding titles at Hastings in 2007 and 2008. He navigated to Santa Anita Park where he was spotted by Paul Reddam and Doug O’Neill. In 2012, he rode I'll Have Another and won the Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita Park. Mario and I'll Have Another followed up with wins at the , Kentucky Derby and the .

J. Paul Reddam was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and graduated from the University of Windsor and obtained a master's degree in philosophy from the University of Toronto. In 1979, he moved to California to earn his Ph.D. at the University of Southern California. As a young man, Reddam became interested in the harness races held at Windsor Raceway that eventually led to his involvement as a horse owner. In 1988 he acquired his first Thoroughbred. Reddam's first major success came in 2004 with a win by Wilko in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and his next in 2006 with Red Rocks in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. His Thoroughbred racing stable is led by head trainer Doug O’Neill, with several horses being conditioned by Craig Dollase. His greatest achievement came when his colt - I’ll Have Another, won the 2012 Kentucky Derby and the 2012 Preakness Stakes.

Past Hartack Award Recipients

2011 - John R. Velazquez, the winning Kentucky Derby Jockey aboard Animal Kingdom (2011), began horse racing on his home island of Puerto Rico. He honed his

2 skills at New York's Saratoga Racetrack, Belmont Park and Aqueduct Racetrack. John Velazquez has succeeded at winning races on the track while providing industry leadership off the track. As the top earning jockey in both 2004 and 2005, Velazquez has won over 4,200 career races, including six Breeders' Cup races, the Dubai World Cup, the and the .

2009 & 2010 - is a three-time Kentucky Derby winner and Louisiana native, who won the Kentucky Derby aboard Street Sense (2007), Mine That Bird (2009) and Super Saver (2010). The 2009 win was an especially momentous occasion in Thoroughbred racing as Borel rode Mine That Bird to victory despite 50-1 odds, the second-longest shot to win in Kentucky Derby history.

2008 - , Hall of Fame Jockey and three-time Kentucky Derby winner, won the Kentucky Derby aboard Real Quiet (1998), Fusaichi Pegasus (2002) and Big Brown (2008). Desormeaux, a Louisiana native, received the first Hartack Award. He was recognized for his 2008 Derby win and was honored for his two decades of achievements and victories in Thoroughbred racing.
