While an internal combustion vehicle requires its fluids changed every few thousand kilometers, it is only at the 240,000km milestone that the Chevrolet Bolt EV’s battery coolant needs replacing.

Another area where the Chevrolet Bolt EV cuts ownership costs is the braking system. Unlike a conventional vehicle which only relies of friction braking to decelerate, Bolt EV uses its Regen On Demand system for a unique one pedal driving experience. In Low mode and using the Regen On Demand paddle, Bolt EV can provide stopping power of up to 0.3g, which is adequate for most everyday driving situ- ations; the driver only has to use the brake pedal to bring the vehicle to a complete stop. Dec.2018 - Autosport 23 New Car Aston Martin Works create first reversible EV powertrain concept

•EV solution for Heritage models part of Aston Martin’s wider EV strategy •Radical idea mitigates possible future restriction of classic car usage •Reversible “Cassette” powertrain concept is sympathetic to original car •Concept development process led by Aston Martin Works

24 Autosport - Dec. 2018 Newport Pagnell: With interest in classic cars growing every year and values of heritage models at all-time high, Aston Martin Lagonda has pioneered a bold new plan: to future-proof these increasingly precious machines by cre- ating the world’s first reversible EV powertrain conversion. Conceived as an integral part of the company’s wider EV strategy, the Heritage electrification concept has been led by Aston Martin Works at Newport Pagnell. Developed around a so-called “cassette” EV powertrain, the objective is to mitigate any future legislation to restrict the use of classic cars by offering a zero emissions conversion. Using knowledge acquired by Aston Martin during the final phase development of the Rapide E and future planning of the all-new range of Lagondas, the Aston Martin Works’ Heritage EV conversion employs state-of-the-art thinking and technology. Production versions of the revolutionary EV cassette will include key components from the Rapide E programme. The first car to receive the radical new EV powertrain is an original 1970 DB6 MkII Volante, which would have been originally hand-crafted at Newport Pagnell. Sitting on the original engine and gearbox mountings, the cassette is en- closed within its own self-contained cell. Umbilical cords from the power unit then feed the car’s electrical systems. Power management is operated via a dedicated screen, which is discreetly fitted to the car’s interior. Given the historical significance of these collectors cars it’s vital any EV conversion is sympathetic to the integrity of the original car. The cassette system offers the perfect solution, offering owners the reassurance of knowing their car is fu- ture-proofed and socially responsible, yet still an authentic Aston Martin with the ability to reinstate its original power- train if desired. Andy Palmer, Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group Chief Executive Officer, said of the Heritage EV concept: “We are very aware of the environmental and social pres- sures that threaten to restrict the use of classic cars in the years to come. Our Second Century Plan not only encom- passes our new and future models, but also protects our treasured heritage. I believe this not only makes Aston Mar- tin unique, but a truly forward-thinking leader in this field.” Paul Spires, President Aston Martin Works commented: “We have been looking for some time to find a way of pro- tecting our customers’ long-term enjoyment of their cars. Driving a classic Aston Martin on pure EV power is a unique experience and one that will no doubt be extremely attractive to many owners, especially those who live in city centres. We also foresee collectors adding another dimen- sion to their collection by commissioning EV-converted her- itage cars. Having handled the initial concept evaluation and build of the proof-of-concept DB6 Volante, Aston Martin Works will also be responsible for completing customer Heritage EV conversions, which are expected to commence in 2019. A bold and progressive solution to a growing issue, the Heritage EV programme ensures Aston Martin’s glorious past also has a sustainable, bright and exciting future.

For the first time ever Lamborghini Squadra Corse has created their first one-off vehicle for the Italian automaker’s motorsport division. Lamborghini says that the SC18 “paces the way to further per- sonalized development projects for motorsport customers under the Squadra Corse brand.” that means we could be seeing more of the one-off creations.

The SC18 was created with extreme aerody- namics in mind and it was accomplished by using parts that were derived from Squadra Corse’s ex- perience. This includes the front hood that was in- spired by the Huracan GT3 EVO.

The Huracan Super Trofeo EVO also motivated the designs for the fenders, fins and airscoops. In the rear is a massive carbon fiber wing that has three different mechanical adjustments that be changed depending on where the car would be racing.

For power, the SC18 relies on Lamborghini’s V12 engine that provides 770 horsepower and 531 lb-ft of torque, just like the Aventador SVJ. Mated to this engine is a seven-speed transmission.

Lamborghini didn’t indulge us with the SC18’s per- formance numbers, but it’s touted light weight and large amount of power definitely point to solid fig- ures.

Squadra Corse picked the Grigio Daytona paint to cover the SC18, with red accents found across the body. Inside is a Nero Ade Alcantara interior with Rosso Alala cross-stitching. As you can see, they really when for a red/black/grey vibe and definitely succeeded.

36 Autosport - Dec. 2018 Entering the eighth generation, the new Porsche 911 cele- brated its world premiere on the eve of this year’s L.A. Auto Show, with the reveal of the 911 Carrera S and 4S Coupé models. The brand’s icon continues to set the standard when it comes to exclusive sportiness.

Unmistakably committed to the Porsche design DNA with a more muscular look and an interior featuring a 10.9-inch touchscreen monitor, the new 911 is timeless and modern. re powerful, Intelligent control and chassis elements as well as innova- tive assistance systems enhance the masterfully uncom- promising dynamism that the classic rear-engine sports car is famed for.

The next generation of flat-six turbocharged engines has been further developed and is more powerful than ever be- fore, resulting in a performance of 450 hp (331 kW) in the 911 Carrera S and 4S. An improved injection process and a new layout for the tur- bochargers and charge air cooling system enhance drive efficiency even further.

The power is delivered by a newly developed eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (dual-clutch transmission). Ad- ditional highlights include new assistance systems, such as the Porsche Wet mode to make driving even safer, Night Vision Assist with thermal imaging camera, as well as com- prehensive connectivity now also using swarm intelligence. 911 Carrera S models start from 450 hp.

The turbocharged flat-six engine of the 911 Carrera S* and 911 Carrera 4S* now produces 450 hp (331 kW). This cor- responds to an increase of 30 hp (22 kW) compared with the previous generation. Both 911 models beat the four- second mark for acceleration from zero to 100 km/h: the rear-wheel-drive 911 Carrera S needs 3.7 seconds and the 911 Carrera 4S, with all-wheel drive, just 3.6 seconds. This makes both cars 0.4 seconds faster than their predeces- sors. The optional Sport Chrono Package reduces the sprint by a further 0.2 seconds.

The top speed has been measured at 308 km/h for the 911 Carrera S and 306 km/h for the all-wheel-drive version. The fuel consumption (NEDC-correlated) of the 911 Carrera S is 8.9 l/100 km, while the 911 Carrera 4S records this figure as 9.0 l/100 km.

Clear design language, unmistakable identity The exterior design is completely new and emphasises the leap in performance for the 911 internally coded as 992. Significantly wider wheel housings arch over the 20-inch front wheels and 21-inch rear wheels. The rear end is now the same width across all models, highlighting the slimline centre section.

At the front, the body is 45 mm wider. Electrical pop-out handles in the doors emphasise the tapered and smooth side contour, while a bonnet with a pronounced recess

• Dedicated racing components and a 25% weight reduction compared to the produc- tion model

Lamborghini Squadra Corse has unveiled the Urus ST-X Concept, the racing version of the first Super SUV in the brand’s history, that is to be used for an innovative single- brand championship that combines race circuit and off-road track. Announced during the 2018 World Finals, the new format will debut in 2020 in the Middle East and Europe on spe- cially prepared FIA-approved circuits, with an “arrive and drive” formula designed to offer driver-customers a com- plete package including car and technical support during the race weekends. The Urus ST-X Concept applies Lamborghini Squadra Corsa’s motorsport experience to a brand-new segment. Compared to the production model, the Urus ST-X Concept has been mechanically optimised and equipped with all the FIA-approved safety elements, including steel roll cage, fire suppression system and FT3 fuel tank.

Andrea Baldi, The CEO of Automobili Lamborghini EMEA, said: “High performance cars and motorsport are both very popular in the Middle East, which is why this region repre- sents the ideal location for this innovative championship. It will be the perfect platform for fans of speed, power and luxury to satisfy their passion. The Urus ST-X embodies the true spirit of Lamborghini, and provides the ultimate per- formance in high-end luxurious design - this car will disrupt the racing industry as we know it.”

Aesthetically, the Urus ST-X Concept is characterised by the matt Verde Mantis (green) livery in addition to the hood in visible carbon fibre. Larger air intakes optimise the cool- ing of the V8 twin-turbo engine which is capable of deliver- ing 650 hp (478 kW) and 850 Nm of torque.

The overall look is completed by the rear wing, the lateral racing exhausts with a new hexagonal design, and 21” sin- gle-nut aluminium alloy wheels fitted with Pirelli tires. The development of the racing configuration has also led to a 25% weight reduction compared with the production model. The light weight, along with the raised set-up and torsional stiffening provided by a roll cage integrated in the frame, contribute to making the Urus ST-X Concept a race car for track and off-road use without compromise. Its track debut will take place during the 2019 Lamborghini World Finals.

Dec.2018 - Autosport 45 New Car Audi e-tron GT concept previews

Tesla Model S rival

Audi gave a glimpse of what the e-tron GT, its first series production electric sedan, will look like when it unveiled a concept study at the Los Angeles auto show .

The GT concept's production version is due to go on sale in 2020 as a rival to the Tesla Model S. It will be Audi's third new-generation volume electric car.

It follows e-tron SUV that is now being rolled out in Europe and the edgier looking e-tron Sportback sibling that arrives late next year.

The Audi e-tron cars are underpinned by the J1 architec- ture developed by Porsche for its Taycan sedan, scheduled to launch next year.

The GT concept's specifications are very close to those of the Taycan. It uses a set of dual permanently synchronous electric motors, one driving each axle.

Together they generate a combined output of 582 hp – just less than the Taycan's 600-plus hp.

The GT's acceleration should nearly match the Porsche as well, with acceleration from 0-100 kph (0-62 mph), taking about 3.5 seconds. In just over 12 seconds the e-tron GT should be able to reach 200 kph (124 mph) before topping out at a maximum speed of 240 kph to conserve the energy supply.

"One feature that not all the competition can match is the option of fully utilizing the [vehicle's] acceleration potential several times in succession," the company said in a state- ment.

The e-tron GT’s battery is sufficiently large in capacity with The wheelbase itself is 2900 mm (114 inches) long, provid- more than 90 kilowatt-hour to provide for a range of more ing a maximum of space in the interior cabin. than 400 km (248 miles) under Europe's new WLTP ho- mologation test. The alternating magnetic field induces an alternating voltage across an air gap in the secondary coil fitted in the floor of the car.

“With a charging output of 11 kilowatts, the Audi e-tron GT concept can be fully charged conveniently over- night,” the automaker said.

The brand’s high-perform- ance unit, Audi Sport, will produce the car in Neckar- sulm, southern Germany, starting in late 2020, with the first deliveries due in early 2021.

ED RACING’S ESSA AL-DOSSARI STORMS BACK TO WIN HA’IL NISSAN RALLY

•Abdulmajeed Al-Khulaifi and Sultan Al- Balooshi win quad and bike categories

HA’IL (Saudi Arabia): ED Racing’s Essa Al-Dossari fought back from fourth overall to win the final stage and secure a second successive victory in the 14th Ha’il Nissan Inter- national Rally on Tuesday. The Nissan Navara driver and his Emirati navigator Ali Has- san Obaid benefited from the fast nature of the final 170.02km selective section through the An Nafud desert to record a time of 1hr 29min 49sec and secure outright vic- tory over Saudi Arabian rivals Ahmed Al-Suhail and Ra- sheed Al-Shammeri by the margin of 2min 22sec. Al-Dossari said: “It was a little bit difficult. We had a prob- lem with the brakes on Monday and we lost a lot of time. The time we gained at the start of that stage, we lost at the end, so we pushed hard today to the maximum. We had a puncture but still managed to win the stage and the rally by a good margin.” The Saudi Arabian Nissan Patrol pairing of Faris Al-Mo- shana and Saud Al-Tamimi rounded off the top three and Salman Al-Mashan was the leading non-Nissan driver in fourth overall. Former leader Khalid Al-Feraihi and his French navigator Sébastien Delaunay recovered strongly to finish seventh, but overnight leader Khalid Al-Jafla could not match the all- terrain vehicles for speed over the closing high-speed kilometres and the Emirati brought his T3-winning Can-Am to the finish in ninth place after a flat tyre cost him further time. Al-Jafla said: “We started the day as first car and then, after 66km, we got a puncture. The track was so fast. The top speed of my car is maybe 140 and the other cars pass me at 180. I lost the lead and then took it easy to make sure that we made it to the finish.” ED Racing’s Emirati driver Abdullah Al-Heraiz retired from Al-Busaidi duly confirmed victory in the T2 category for fifth place and there were also non-finishes for Reda Al- series production cross-country vehicles by the margin of Shammeri, who rolled, Abdullah Al-Remal, Yayha Halawi 13min 30sec from Khalaf and Joaan Al-Juaan. and Ibrahim Al-Salman. Kiwi Mad Mike takes on Dakar winner Nikolaev at famous Kirov Factory.

Two of motorsport's biggest characters hooked up for a drifting masterclass in Saint Petersburg as Mad Mike Whiddett took on multiple Dakar Rally winner Eduard Nikolaev at the famous Kirov Factory.

- Russian Nikolaev welcomed New Zealand car drifting star Whiddett to his home country for a unique challenge in the nation's northern capital. - The idea first came up a year ago as a joke at the Good- wood Festival of Speed in England where the pair talked about drifting head-to-head. - Ahead of his 2019 Dakar Rally truck defence next January in Peru, 34-year-old Nikolaev started his nine-ton KAMAZ truck ride at one end of the factory. - Meanwhile Whiddett, 37, began his Bad Bull Mazda RX-8 ride at the other end of the factory before the two met in the middle for a drifting masterclass. - With Whiddett's car nine times lighter than the truck and lenge, said: "It took me quite a while to get used to such a the four-rotor engine five times smaller compared to the big and heavy truck speeding right next to me.
