New and under-used source material demonstrates how the popular myth surrounding the actions of James Daly and his co-conspirators was nothing more than a self-serving exaggeration of events designed to fit an idealised Nationalist narrative of Irish resistance to British rule.

    July 2020 Newsletter II Connaught Rangers Association State Commemoration of the Connaught Rangers Mutiny in Glasnevin Cemetery. Wreath Laying Tyrrellspass, Co Westmeath. On a dull, windswept afternoon, on the 28th of June 2020, a wreath was laid at the grave of Private James Daly in Tyrrellspass, Co Westmeath. The weather conditions contrasted with the high tempera- tures and humidity in India, where exactly one hundred years ago, the infamous Connaught Rangers mu- tiny began. James Daly and his fellow Rangers mutinied as a consequence of the atrocities committed by the British forces in Ireland during the War of Independence. Daly was the last British soldier executed for mutiny. Earlier that day, members of the CRA were present at the official State ceremony to com- memorate the mutineers in Glasnevin Cemetery. An Tánaiste, Mr Leo Varadkar, T.D., laid a wreath at the CR memorial. Also present was the British Ambassador, Mr Robin Barnett and Indian Ambassador, Mr Sandeep Kumar. An army piper played “Lay him away on the hillside” which was written to com- memorate the leader of the mutiny, James Daly. The CRA were honoured and privileged to be invited to the ceremony, which observed social distancing regulations. 1 Tubbercurry Connaught Rangers Memorial Group The Connaught Rangers Memorial Group in Tubbercurry was established to commemorate the centenary of the Connaught Rangers mutiny in India, 1920. This commemoration project is designed to tell the story and honour the memory of those courageous men who, whilst far away from home, stood in solidarity with their fellow countrymen fighting for Irish independence.

    The Journal of Military History and Defence Studies Volume 1 Issue 1 (January 2020) The contribution of the Irish soldier to the British Army during the Peninsula campaign 1808 – 1814 James Deery The majority of the historiography concerning the Irish contribution to the British army during their campaign on the Iberian Peninsula (1808 -1814) has focused on the Irish regiments and their service with Wellington in Portugal, Spain and France. While the significance of research into these regiments is undeniable it has unintentionally resulted in an under appreciation of the true extent of the Irish soldier’s contribution. The purpose of this paper is to add to the existing historiography by examining the wider Irish contribution in order to arrive at an empirical based assessment as to the criticality of the Irish soldier to Wellington’s victory during the Peninsula war. The majority of Irish soldiers who served in the Peninsula did so in English and Scottish infantry regiments. Their abilities and crucially their integration into the British army were key success factors for Wellington during the Peninsula campaign. An examination of how this was achieved forms a key part of this paper which finds that the capabilities of the Irish soldier and the British army organisational structure and system mutually supported each other. Furthermore, the Irish officer’s contribution has only been assessed based on individual accounts and narratives in the absence of any in-depth evaluation of their actual numbers. With over 30 per cent of Wellington’s officers being Irish an analysis of their levels of command was undertaken to demonstrate their significance to the overall conduct and operation of the Peninsula army.

Nor does it comprise a complete record of the memorable battles and campaigns in which the various regiments have been engaged. Rather, it is in the nature of a search for an answer to the question, 'What became of the regiments of foot?' The last few years have seen the disappearance of many famous regiments, due to amalgamations and the formation of new 'large' regiments. I have endeavoured here to give a brief history of each of the numbered regiments, from its initial establishment to the present-day formation, touching in each case on its origins, traditions, service record and, where appropriate, its most famous engagements. It is said that battles are the punctuation marks of a regiment's history. Up to about 1750, a regiment when raised was usually named after some royal personage or after the commanding officer. It was in 1743 that the rank or number of regiments was first confirmed by Royal Warrant.
