i Return to Contents TheThe LSRALSRA CollectionCollection A Collection of Pipe Tunes By Joe Massey and Chris Eyre dedicated to the Liverpool Scottish and their Regimental Association i ii Return to Contents The tunes in this book are drawn mainly from the Airs & Graces Books 1 and 2 that Joe and I produced around 2002- 2005 with the addition of several more tunes I have written since, plus a lot more background information and illustrations. Some of the tunes have been revised/updated, had some minor mistakes corrected, been improved slightly or had harmony added. Joe’s tunes are already in the public domain. I’m making all mine available too. All I ask is that if you use any of the tunes you acknowledge who wrote them. I’m not planning to publish this book in hardback. It is designed as an e-book which has several advantages over a conventional hard-back. In this publication you can zoom in on any of the high resolution pictures, click on any title on the Contents page to go straight to the tune, click “Return to Contents” to go back to the tune list and even listen to many of the tunes by clicking on the link below to my webpage. http://www.eyrewaves.co.uk/pipingpages/ Airs_and_Graces.asp If you prefer a hard copy you are welcome to print out any tune or the entire book. • 1 Introduction
Cambridge University Press 0521848008 - Citizen Soldiers: The Liverpool Territorials in the First World War Helen B. McCartney Excerpt More information 1 Introduction The First World War drew ordinary British men into an army that by 1918 numbered over 5 million soldiers.1 Some had volunteered to serve; others had been less willing and were conscripted later in the war. Most had little contact with the military in pre-war days, and before 1914 few would have contemplated participating in war. These men were first and foremost civilians, and this book examines their experience from their initial decision to enlist, through trench warfare on the Western Front, to death, discharge or demobilization at the end of the war. It is concerned with the soldier’s relationship both with the army and with home, and examines the extent to which these citizen soldiers maintained their civilian values, attitudes, skills and traditions and applied them to the task of soldiering in the period of the First World War. The popular image of the British soldier in the First World War is that of a passive victim of the war in general and the military system in particular. On joining the army a soldier supposedly ceased to act as an individual and lost his ability to shape his world. It is an image that has been reinforced by two historiographical traditions and is largely derived from a narrow view of the British soldier presented by the self-selecting literary veterans who wrote the disillusionment literature of the late 1920s and 1930s.2 For some historians, the characteristics of the British ‘Tommy’ have become synonymous with the qualities of the regular pre-war private soldier.

  • The Evolution of British Tactical and Operational Tank Doctrine and Training in the First World War
The evolution of British tactical and operational tank doctrine and training in the First World War PHILIP RICHARD VENTHAM TD BA (Hons.) MA. Thesis submitted for the award of the degree of Master of Philosophy by the University of Wolverhampton October 2016 ©Copyright P R Ventham 1 ABSTRACT Tanks were first used in action in September 1916. There had been no previous combat experience on which to base tactical and operational doctrine for the employment of this novel weapon of war. Training of crews and commanders was hampered by lack of vehicles and weapons. Time was short in which to train novice crews. Training facilities were limited. Despite mechanical limitations of the early machines and their vulnerability to adverse ground conditions, the tanks achieved moderate success in their initial actions. Advocates of the tanks, such as Fuller and Elles, worked hard to convince the sceptical of the value of the tank. Two years later, tanks had gained the support of most senior commanders. Doctrine, based on practical combat experience, had evolved both within the Tank Corps and at GHQ and higher command. Despite dramatic improvements in the design, functionality and reliability of the later marks of heavy and medium tanks, they still remained slow and vulnerable to ground conditions and enemy counter-measures. Competing demands for materiel meant there were never enough tanks to replace casualties and meet the demands of formation commanders. This thesis will argue that the somewhat patchy performance of the armoured vehicles in the final months of the war was less a product of poor doctrinal guidance and inadequate training than of an insufficiency of tanks and the difficulties of providing enough tanks in the right locations at the right time to meet the requirements of the manoeuvre battles of the ‘Hundred Days’.

The History of 119 Infantry Brigade in the Great War with Special Reference to the Command of Brigadier-General Frank Percy Crozier by Michael Anthony Taylor A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History School of History and Cultures College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham September 2016 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. Abstract 119 Brigade, 40th Division, had an unusual origin as a ‘left-over’ brigade of the Welsh Army Corps and was the only completely bantam formation outside 35th Division. This study investigates the formation’s national identity and demonstrates that it was indeed strongly ‘Welsh’ in more than name until 1918. New data on the social background of men and officers is added to that generated by earlier studies. The examination of the brigade’s actions on the Western Front challenges the widely held belief that there was an inherent problem with this and other bantam formations. The original make-up of the brigade is compared with its later forms when new and less efficient units were introduced.
