Vol. 3 (2007) Enacting Orthodoxy in Walter Martin’s The Kingdom of the Cults Nathan Schneider 1st Year, PhD Religious Studies University of California, Santa Barbara Santa Barbara, California Compared to the bourgeoning discussions about heresiology in antiquity, especially connected to broader ones about constructions of orthodoxy, very much less has been said about more contemporary examples of this tradition, which, assuredly, is alive and well. Particularly in evangelical Christian circles, there are numerous books available that list, describe, and evaluate the ever-expanding choices people have in the marketplace of religious ideas. Meanwhile, scholars of antiquity have come to realize the significance of this literary genre in the “production” of difference among communities as well as, in certain circumstances, of what came to be called orthodoxies. Daniel Boyarin goes so far as to suggest that heresiology pioneered the concept of religion itself as an autonomous, identity-forming phenomenon.1 Claims like these should lead us to be more alert about the presence and influence of this genre as it is expressed in our own time, the role it has played recently, and that which it is playing now. The apparently globalizing world certainly makes the turn of the 21st century at least as formative a time for spiritual categories, boundaries, and authorities as late antiquity, when the Roman 1 Boyarin, Border Lines, 202-211. The Encyclopedia of New Religions Bibliography The following bibliography has been constructed to enable readers to explore selected topics in greater depth. Rather than present a long uncategorized list, which would have been unhelpful and potentially confusing, the classification of literature mirrors the format of the book. (Classifying new religions and spiritualities is a notoriously difficult problem, and it should not be thought that groups that have been bracketed together do not have important differences.) In a few instances a movement may be relevant to more than one section; hence readers are advised to look in other sections if they cannot instantly locate the sought material. Anyone who compiles a bibliography on new spiritualities has to make choices, since there is a vast array of literature available. While endeavouring to include a good range of material and viewpoints, we have omitted material that we consider to be badly inaccurate or misleading. However, some religious movements have been virtually neglected by writers and hence the material indicated below is the best available. For some groups there is virtually no literature apart from their own writings. While we have aimed to incorporate material on the grounds of accessibility, quality, up-to-dateness, popularity and prominence, inclusion here does not necessarily imply endorsement by the editor or individual authors. At the end of each section a selection of websites has been provided. However, it should be noted that, whilst these were all available at the time of writing, and whilst we believe them to be relatively reliable, unlike books, websites can literally disappear overnight. -

Course Description This course primarily involves the study of major new religions and cults in the United States. Attention will be given to the theological and operational characteristics of new religions and cults. The course will give special attention to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons), the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (Jehovah’s Witnesses), and various expressions of New Age spirituality. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES At the conclusion of the semester, the student will: (1) Understand the history, leadership, doctrines, ethics, and organization of the groups studied through academic study and field observation; (2) Understand the significance of these groups for their own members, for Christians, and for the history of religion; (3) Demonstrate the ability to enable and equip class members to relate more effectively to members of these groups, for discussion and evangelistic witness; and (4) Be able to recognize the new religions which will surely come into expression in the future. To all these people the author gives unconditional appreciation and thanks, and takes personal credit for any inaccuracies that might have occurred. 2 PREFACE This resource identifies some of the traditional practices of thirty-seven of the religions listed by Canadians in the 1991 census. It is designed to help nursing staff of health care facilities to care for patients with unfamiliar religious practices. Details of each religion are not included but traditional practices that can affect nursing care are. There are great variations within any religion or denomination; every member or adherent of that faith does not follow all traditional practices. The guide provides a basis for planning care with the information needed to question individual patients about preferences for practices important to them. A member or authority verified the information for each of the religions included. For each faith there is a short history, a list of common religious practices that may affect care, and an addendum of differences. The facility chaplain can contact a religious representative for the patient or family. -

This knowledge will allow one to connect to spiritual beings, perform magic, and gain a deeper understanding of the universe. The Characteristics of the Occult The occult is not a religion with an official founder, leaders, or orthodox belief system. The occult does not mean “Satanic” to those who practice it; rather, it is the belief that esoteric knowledge will gain one power and enlightenment. Many different religions and people have adopted this belief and pursued it in different ways throughout history. Tribal shamanism, Hinduism, mystery religions, Gnosticism, Hermeticism, Freemasonry, and witchcraft are all occult belief systems. Yet all those who practice the occult agree there are basic characteristics of what is called the occult. The main characteristics of the occult: Esoteric knowledge being necessary for power and enlightenment The belief in and ability to interact with the spiritual realm The ability to have divine knowledge of other people, the past, and future The ability to create action at a distance, known as magick Though many different people have practiced the occult throughout time and in different ways, this paper will look at how the occult developed and changed throughout history to become the modern-day occult. Volume 7 Issue 3-4 2013 115 THE CAUCASUS & GLOBALIZATION Islam, perceived as an instrument of anti-Russian policy, became a tag attached to the North Caucasian Muslims; from that time on the Russian Empire was no longer talking about the legal status of the Muslims, but was determined to fight Islam and its followers as the “enemies” of the Russian statehood in the region. Conclusion The legal regimes St. Petersburg established in the Caucasus in the 18th-early 20th centuries were nothing more than legal constructs ill-adapted to Caucasian reality. The local people could make neither heads nor tails of what the Russian officials and Russian lawyers expected from them. The Russian authorities were fully aware of their failures and, throughout the 18th and the first half of the 19th centuries tried to adjust, at least partly, the regulatory acts and mechanisms of their implementa- tion to the requirements of Caucasian society and the level of its social development. The history of legal regulation of religious relations between the Russian authorities and the so-called “alien peoples” (the peoples whose lands were joined to the Russian Empire in the 17th-19th centuries) shows that the Russian Empire, albeit willing to be a law-governed state in which legal principles prevailed over political expediency, fell short of the aim. Study of specifics of the legal policy regarding religious relations in the Russian Empire revealed that, on the whole, they were regulated by secular laws. Russia wanted to gradually extend the rights its Russian subjects enjoyed to all other peoples; it even tried to create mechanisms that ensured the state’s observance of these rights, that is, mechanisms for realizing the rights of the Russian Muslims. -

Prof. Dr. Joseph ZAND Peer Reviewed Article Reviewed Peer Abstract This paper critically examines the attitude of the Council of Europe through the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights in relation to New Religious Movements (NRMs) sometimes referred to as ‘cults’. On the whole, in contemporary Europe, NMRs seem to have been particularly vulnerable to persecution especially since the collapse of the Soviet Empire and the subsequent integration of many Eastern European states into the Council of Europe. Even though the Strasbourg organs initially limited religious freedoms to the individual, it now accepts that a religious organization also enjoys the right to religious freedom as representative of its members. In spite of this, by and large, NRMs have been denied recognition as bona fide religious institutions in Europe. This is mainly due to the fact that the European Court allows its member states a wide margin of appreciation in such matters. The Church of Scientology has been used as an example to illustrate the challenges faced by such organizations striving for recognition.
