THE BUCHAREST UNIVERSITY of ECONOMIC STUDIES The
THE BUCHAREST UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMIC STUDIES The Faculty of International Business and Economics The Department of Modern Languages and Business Communication of ASE Iuliu Hațieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj- Napoca 7th International Conference: Synergies in Communication Bucharest, Romania, 22 - 23 November 2018 BEHIND THE SCREENS: A STUDY OF THE FILMS OF THREE INDIAN WOMEN DIRECTORS Minouti NAIK1 Abstract Indian films, even after 76 years of independence and 105 years of Indian Cinema, are a predominantly male domain. The percentage of women film makers, in the industry, is a mere 9.1%. Despite this, the films directed by women have compelled audiences to take notice, because of the wide spectrum of issues they have touched upon. Three women directors, whose movies have left an indelible mark on the audiences, include Tanuja Chandra, Meghna Gulzar and Gauri Shinde. This paper analyses the work of these three women directors, for the uniqueness of their themes and the characters they have sketched, and attempts to find out, what has led to their films being etched deeply, into the consciousness of their audience. This will be analysed against the backdrop of the realities of the society from which these films emerge, and as a reflection of the gender dynamics existing in Indian society. Keywords: Indian cinema, women, themes, characters, uniqueness 1. Introduction Men have sight, women insight. - Victor Hugo Victor Hugo‟s observation, penned down in his memoirs, might be an apt point to begin with, when one reflects upon films made by Indian women filmmakers. Despite films forming a very important facet of the Indian society and the fact that India completed 105 years of cinema, this year, the number of women making films in India is very small. -
Responses to 100 Best Acts Post-2009-10-11 (For Reference)
Bobbytalkscinema.Com Responses/ Comments on “100 Best Performances of Hindi Cinema” in the year 2009-10-11. submitted on 13 October 2009 bollywooddeewana bollywooddeewana.blogspot.com/ I can't help but feel you left out some important people, how about Manoj Kumar in Upkar or Shaheed (i haven't seen that) but he always made strong nationalistic movies rather than Sunny in Deol in Damini Meenakshi Sheshadri's performance in that film was great too, such a pity she didn't even earn a filmfare nomination for her performance, its said to be the reason on why she quit acting Also you left out Shammi Kappor (Junglee, Teesri MANZIL ETC), shammi oozed total energy and is one of my favourite actors from 60's bollywood Rati Agnihotri in Ek duuje ke Liye Mala Sinha in Aankhen Suchitra Sen in Aandhi Sanjeev Kumar in Aandhi Ashok Kumar in Mahal Mumtaz in Khilona Reena Roy in Nagin/aasha Sharmila in Aradhana Rajendra Kuamr in Kanoon Time wouldn't permit me to list all the other memorable ones, which is why i can never make a list like this bobbysing submitted on 13 October 2009 Hi, As I mentioned in my post, you are right that I may have missed out many important acts. And yes, I admit that out of the many names mentioned, some of them surely deserve a place among the best. So I have made some changes in the list as per your valuable suggestion. Manoj Kumar in Shaheed (Now Inlcuded in the Main 100) Meenakshi Sheshadri in Damini (Now Included in the Main 100) Shammi Kapoor in Teesri Manzil (Now Included in the Main 100) Sanjeev Kumar in Aandhi (Now Included in Worth Mentioning Performances) Sharmila Togore in Aradhana (Now Included in Worth Mentioning Performances) Sunny Deol in Damini (Shifted to More Worth Mentioning Performances) Mehmood in Pyar Kiye Ja (Shifted to More Worth Mentioning Performances) Nagarjun in Shiva (Shifted to More Worth Mentioning Performances) I hope you will approve the changes made as per your suggestions. -
Coalition Between Politics & Entertainment in Hindi Films: A
Journal of Education & Social Policy Vol. 1 No. 1; June 2014 Coalition between Politics & Entertainment in Hindi Films: A Discourse Analysis Dr. C. M. Vinaya Kumar Assistant Professor & Head Department of Journalism and Mass Communication Krishna University Machilipatnam-521 001 91-9985085530 Romesh Chaturvedi Sr. Lecturer Amity School of Communication Amity University, Lucknow Campus Uttar Pradesh, 91-9721964685 India Shruti Mehrotra Sr. Lecturer Amity School of Communication Amity University, Lucknow Campus Uttar Pradesh, India 91-9451177264 Abstract The study attempts to explore dynamics of political discourse as reflected in Hindi films. Political messages in most Hindi films are concealed within entertainment. Films use thrilling & entertaining plots mixed with political content in order to convey their messages to the public. Films not only reflect reality but also construct the political ideology. The public is generally unaware of the extent to which they are being influenced, managed and conditioned by the political discourses in Hindi films. This study attempts to conduct the discourse analysis on the Hindi film “Chakravyuh” to find how politics and entertainment are merged together to influence public opinion. The film is based on the dark, largely-unexposed world of the Naxalites fighting for their land and dignity. Discourse analysis of the film will help in exploring how an entertaining film can carry a meaningful message. For over 40 years in India, since the emergence of the Naxalite rebellion, cinema has drawn inspiration from the rupture caused by this iconic movement in Indian political history. Hindi films seem to have woken up to Naxalism, or Maoism, as it is more commonly known today. -

The enhanced visibility of South Asian culture in the Irish context is testimony to on the one hand, the global expansion of Hindi cinema, and on the other, to the demographic expansion of the South Asian community in Ireland during the last decade. -

Chapter 1 Introduction
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Introduction A film, also called a movie or motion picture, is a series of still or moving images. It is produced by recording photographic images with cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or visual effects. The process of filmmaking has developed into an art form and industry. Films are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment and a powerful method for educating – or indoctrinating – citizens. The visual elements of cinema give motion pictures a universal power of communication. In the present study the Researcher has taken two movies for her study they are: To Sir with Love and Pygmalion. The movie To Sir with Love is about many things – teen angst, race relations, and poverty. In the movie the school teacher, Mark Thackeray, who quickly learns that his students need a different kind of education than that of a textbook. Instead of exploding like the kids wish, Thackeray takes a different tack; treating them like adults and talking about things they have questions about. The ploy works, and along the way Thackeray learns to deal with indifferent fellow teachers and racism. From the very beginning, members of the class try to bait him into losing his temper so that he'll quit. Their previous teacher committed suicide, we are told. Gradually, he gains their trust and helps them overcome their personal struggles, thus winning their respect and friendship. A great inspirational movie, To Sir with Love also boasts British songstress Lulu in her first film role, as well as prominent soundtrack artist. -
