The 2017-21 city council term officially begins today, and the new council will hold its first meeting Thursday evening. Councilmen and the mayor will take the oath of office at 1 p.m. today at the Trotter Convention Center. A reception will follow the swearing-in ceremony. The new council is largely the same as the previous one, with the exception of Fredrick Jackson, who unseated Marty Turner in Ward 4. My drunken father was driving his friends car right around the old Billups gas station and slammed into a stopped car in front of us. Being a kid I was laying on the shelf by the back window of the old 50s Buick, some of us can remember it was a great place for a kid to watch the world go by. When we , it threw me across the seats and into the front windshield and broke it. I didn’t get anything more than a few scratches. I also remember riding on the front fenders of my uncle’s Packard on the way back from the wash hole/swimming pool. I also remember being cut up pretty bad from falling off the back of a logging truck, because all the kids rode there and the police would wave at you when THE NATION they passed.
