Tyler Perry and the Rhetoric of Madea: Contrasting Performances of Perry’S Leading Lady As She Appears on Stage and Screen
religions Article Tyler Perry and the Rhetoric of Madea: Contrasting Performances of Perry’s Leading Lady as She Appears on Stage and Screen Katherine Whitfield 1 and Andre E. Johnson 2,* 1 Formation for Ministry, Memphis Theological Seminary, Memphis, TN 38104, USA 2 Communication and Film, University of Memphis, Memphis, TN 38152, USA * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +1-(901)-678-2565 Received: 15 May 2019; Accepted: 10 July 2019; Published: 16 July 2019 Abstract: In this essay, we will explore the variances in Madea’s character and presence on stage and on screen in both productions of Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail: The Play and Madea Goes to Jail. Specifically, we examine the multiple and varying ways in which the character of Madea performs for different audiences by examining how the roles of violence, religion and wisdom operate on stage and screen. Exploring the subtle—and at times, not-so-subtle—ways in which Madea’s performances differ from stage to screen, we suggest that Madea also performs as a text that Perry then uses to impart different messages to audiences of both stage and screen. Keywords: Tyler Perry; rhetoric; media; film; theater; black studies; popular culture 1. Introduction Industry leaders recognize Tyler Perry as one of the most successful Black entertainers of all time.1 As the first African American to own a major film studio, Perry has also realized success as an actor, playwright, filmmaker and producer. Even those who have never seen a Tyler Perry production will likely recognize his name as synonymous with that of his signature character, Madea. -

My reading of the character of Madea veers against the common narrative her existence being just another recycled trope of men disguised as women only to perform in stereotypical and demonizing behavior. I argue Madea represents what I refer to as a “trans*female character”, within the space of Perry’s popular film that feature her. Read through the lens of being trans*female character, I propose this shift in analysis and critique of cinematic displays of drag helps to transgress beyond male/female binaries of acceptable and possible visual gender representations. -

ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: SCREENING DIVERSITY: WOMEN AND WORK IN TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY POPULAR CULTURE Laura K. Brunner, Doctor of Philosophy, 2016 Dissertation directed by: Professor A. Lynn Bolles Department of Women’s Studies Screening Diversity: Women and Work in Twenty-first Century Popular Culture explores contemporary representations of diverse professional women on screen. Audiences are offered successful women with limited concerns for feminism, anti- racism, or economic justice. I introduce the term viewsers to describe a group of movie and television viewers in the context of the online review platform Internet Movie Database (IMDb) and the social media platforms Twitter and Facebook. Screening Diversity follows their engagement in a representative sample of professional women on film and television produced between 2007 and 2015. The sample includes the television shows, Scandal, Homeland, VEEP, Parks and Recreation, and The Good Wife, as well as the movies, Zero Dark Thirty, The Proposal, The Heat, The Other Woman, I Don’t Know How She Does It, and Temptation. Viewsers appreciated female characters like Olivia (Scandal), and Maya (Zero Dark Thiry) who treated their work as a quasi-religious moral imperative. Producers and viewsers shared the belief that unlimited time commitment and personal identification were vital components of professionalism. However, powerful women, like The Proposal’s Margaret and VEEP’s Selina, were often called bitches. Some viewsers embraced bitch-positive politics in recognition of the struggles of women in power. Women’s disproportionate responsibility for reproductive labor, often compromises their ability to live up to moral standards of work. Unlike producers, viewsers celebrated and valued that labor. -

It was their sole hit, and Morgan soon left the group to sing back-up with the likes of Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston, and Melba Moore. In 1986, Morgan released her solo debut album Do Me Baby on Capitol Records. The title track, her cover of the Prince original, topped R&B charts for three weeks.
