  • Jagalchi Market Gukje Market
TWO NIGHTS/THREE DAYS TOURS Option B: Jagalchi Market Jagalchi Market, located on the shoreside road in Busan's Jung-gu, is Korea's largest seafood market, selling both live and dried fish. After the Korean War the market solidified itself as a fish market. Most of the people who sell fish are women, so the vendors here are called Jagalchi Ajumma, "ajumma" meaning middle-aged or married woman in Korean. This market represents Busan and is famous throughout the country. If you visit, you can eat fresh raw fish right at the market. Even these days you can see women selling mackerel, sea squirts (ascidians) and whale meat on wooden boxes along the road outside of the market and along the shore. Every year in October the Jagalchi Cultural Tourism Festival is held, and it is easy to visit because of the convenient transportation provided by subway. Jagalchi Market is where you can see the lifestyle of the Busan locals. Gukje Market Following the Korean War, refugees who fled to Busan set up stalls in order to make a living, and this was the beginning of the Gukje Market (gukje meaning "international" in Korean). The Gukje Market is one of Korea’s largest markets; each alleyway is crowded with stalls, and it connects to Bupyeong Market, Kkangtong Market, and other smaller markets. The market stocks such a wide variety of goods, that you can find almost everything you need right here. Busan Gamcheon Culture Village Gamcheon Culture Villiage is formed by houses built in staircase-fashion on the foothills of a coastal mountain, earning this village the nickname of "Machu Picchu of Busan." The many alleys cutting through this community are vibrantly decorated with murals and sculptures created by the residents.

  • Relief Printmaking in Korea
UCSC ART 161C College of Fine Arts, SEOUL NATIONAL UNIVESITY, KOREA Summer session 2020 Tradition and Innovation : Relief Printmaking in Korea Instructor: Jimin Lee [email protected] Students will study many aspects of both traditional and contemporary Relief (woodblock) printmaking, including both materials, tools, and techniques, and the issues, concepts and history of the field. Today’s landscape in the discipline of printmaking/print media, both in its message and its production, has rapidly changed from its roots in practical communication through traditional fine arts-based processes to current newer technology and theoretical debates. These new forms are shifting within global cultures at a rapid pace. Korea has its own unique, rich history and traditions that pave the way toward new technological developments while continuing to embrace and reinforce traditional artisan values and methodologies. This class will explore the history of printing technology, developed in Korea from the seventh through the fourteenth century A.D., and ranging from the world’s oldest printed text, The Great Dharani Sutra, to the latest cutting-edge technology, including laser cutting. Classes will include field trips to museums and galleries, hands-on workshops at a traditional Korean paper museum (hanji), and interactions with local visiting artists, master printmakers, papermakers and traditional artisans. Through various class activities, excursions, and cultural visits students will be exposed to diverse and multi-regional art practices that will broaden their perspectives and increase their understanding not only in the field of print media but in the larger contemporary visual culture. This program will help stimulate and inspire our UCSC art major students to prepare their artistic careers and advance their possibilities for study opportunities internationally.
