In keeping with the academic mission of the IPFW Department of Theatre, we are pleased to feature "Production Notes" in our program. These notes are academic in nature and speak to you from the point of view of some of the many collaborators it takes to create our productions. This time you will be hearing from student stage manager Scott Maughmer.

Last year I decided to pursue a dream I have always had-to obtain a degree in theatre. This was no small undertaking, as I had been working away from the theatre since I graduated high school some 28 years ago. I met with Associate Professor Craig Humphrey three weeks before the start of fall semester 2009 and officially transferred from Ivy Tech; I was now a full-time theatre major. I was certain I had lost my mind! I am now in my second year at IPFW, and I am currently the oldest student in the theatre department. Keeping up with classes, shows, and peers-most more than 20 years younger than me-can be a challenge. But I have never looked back. During my first semester, I was cast in The Yellow Boat. It was my first time on stage in 28 years! For our second production, I was asked to serve as assistant stage manager by stage manager Aaron Mann; I could not have had a better teacher. It was a good experience to learn the responsibilities of a stage manager ... and there are many. I feel one of the best things about serving as a stage manager is getting to watch the director's process. I had worked with Assistant Professor Jeff Casazza as a cast member in The Yellow Boat and was involved in the process. Serving as assistant stage manager for his production of Eurydice allowed me to view his process. I was later cast in Chair and Professor John O'Connell's production of Noises Off! as Tim, which allowed me to be part of another director's process. The audition for Spelling Bee was my first musical audition ever, and even though I was not cast in it, I intended to participate in the show as a crew member. But I was taken by surprise when the director asked me to stage manage Spelling Bee. Serving as stage manager requires as much focus as being on stage and much more multi-tasking. I became responsible for running production meetings, following up with each production crew, and keeping the director updated on the process in each area. I also have to write down the blocking (where the actors move onstage and when), which involves a lot oflegible writing, and just as much time erasing, since many changes are made early on in rehearsals. The work that is needed to make a production come together is intense and stressful. I have deadlines to meet every day and plenty of follow-up work to do. I am responsible for making sure all of the behind-the-scenes work comes together. Come show time, I will be calling light and sound cues and have to keep my team focused. I consider myself fortunate to have been a part ofJ ohno's process on stage, and even more fortunate to see his process and be a part of his production team. I've spent as many hours here as a student working in or on productions as I ever did overseeing a three-state region for a major corporation. I enjoy this much more, and I still haven't looked back! Scott Maughmer, Stage Manager Introducing Tori Zischke We extend a warm welcome to our new Assistant Professor of Acting, Victoria (Tori) Adams Zischke. Tori received a B.F.A. in Acting from Southern Methodist University in Dallas and an M.F.A. in Acting from the Professional Theatre Training Program at the University of Delaware (PTTP).

She has been a professional actress in New York City for the past 18 years, but she has been performing onstage since the age of three. Her New York, national tour, and regional credits include Becca in Rabbit Hole (Repertory Theatre of St. Louis-Kevin Kline Best Actress nomination), Quilters (Denver Center Theatre Company), Mrs. Antrobus in Skin ofOur Teeth and Frau Rheme in Behind the Bedroom Wall (Connecticut Repertory Theatre), Portia in and Guenevere in Camelot (Pioneer Theatre Company), Maria in The Sound oJMusic (Westchester Broadway Theatre), Heavenly in Sweet Bird ofYouth (Shakespeare Theatre ofNew Jersey), Alice in You Can 't Take It With You (Alley Theatre), Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing, Abigail in 1776, Mrs. Page in Merry Wives ofWindsor, Buttercup in HMS Pinafore, Polly Browne in The Boyfriend, Ophelia in , Desdemona in , Philia in Forum (Utah Shakespearean Festival), Anna in The Pagans (Abingdon Theatre Company-off-Broadway), Edith Conant in Voices from the Hill (The Connolly/Moonworks-off-Broadway), Scottie in My Swan (off-Broadway), the national tour of Chess, and many others.

She was the re-occurring character of Babs Walker on NBC's Another World, and has done many commercials and voice overs. She is a member of the Actor's Equity Association, the Screen Actor's Guild, and the American Federation ofTelevision and Radio Artists. DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Book by Rachel Sheinkin, Conceived by Rebecca Feldman, Directed by John O'Connell , Music Direction by Mindy Cox The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious tale of overachievers' angst, chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The Tony Award -winning show is the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time. The Hot L Baltimore By Lanford Wilson, Directed by Craig A. Humphrey A brilliant off-Broadway success by one of America's most outstanding living playwrights, The Hot L Baltimore brings humor, compassion, and arresting theatricality to its touching study of lost souls trapped by society's unyielding decay. The sum total of who they are, or wish to be , becomes a poignantly powerful call to America to recover its lost values and restore itself in its own and the world's eyes. Williams Theatre December 3, 4, 9, 10, and 11 at 8 p.m. December 12 at 2 p.m.

Admission for IPFW students with ID is free Anton in Show Business By Jane Martin This madcap comedy follows three actresses across the footlights, down the rabbit hole, and into a strangely familiar Wonderland that looks a lot like American theatre. In the tradition of great backstage comedies, like last season 's Noises Off, Anton in Show Business shows the joys, pains and absurdities of putting on a play.

King Lear By William Shakespeare, Directed by John O'Connell The ties that bind in King Lear are woven of deceit, greed, grief, and joyfulness. Often regarded as Shakespeare's crowning achievement, this tragedy about the relationship between parents and their offspring shows us how quickly we can become blinded by fear and killed with love. Thorn Hofrichter will be featured in the role of Lear.

The Department of Theatre seeks your assistance in the College ofVisual and Performing Arts' Campaign for the Arts. Our mission is four-fold: to offer the academic degree programs most in demand by area citizens; to provide the northeast Indiana region with exceptionally high-quality theatrical performances by students, faculty, and community members; to offer to the community various theatrical services, such as student matinees and theatre training through the IPFW Community Arts Academy; and to provide a continuum of outreach activities to the greater northeast Indiana community.

Our vision is to be widely recognized as the major theatre resource center for the Greater Fort Wayne and northeast Indiana communities. To meet this challenge, we need your help!

IPFW is a state-assisted-not state-supported-university. Furthermore, we are allocated only about one-half of the state dollars that the main campuses receive per student. This, in turn, directly impacts the theatre department with severe budgetary constraints. Your dollars are essential to help us move forward with our commitments to northeast Indiana.

Scholarships for our talented students are a very high priority. Please consider joining the VPA Sterling Scholarship Society through a three-year commitment of $300 or more per year. Details are available on the VPA Web site at www. ipfw.edu/vpa.

Should you be interested in helping to financially support us in our mission, please contact Charles O'Connor, dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, at 260-481-6977. Your contribution will enable us in our mission to keep our academic programs current, continue diversity in theatre programming, and maintain our commitment to northeast Indiana through our service and outreach activities.

Please become a member of our Campaign for the Arts by choosing one of the giving categories described on the next page ..And remember, your gift is tax deductible. Please join our CAMPAIGN FOR THE ARTS by selecting the giving level of your choice.
