HarnessRacing Weekend Preview, 6 of 12 December 16, 2016 www.harnessracing.com Winter Blues Hits The Meadowlands Winter blues have set in at the Meadowlands, and not just because the temperature at the 7:15 p.m. post time on Sat- urday is expected to be in the low 20s, with a wind chill making it feel more like the North Pole. No, it’s because the 11-year-old gelding Winter Blues will be in action in Race 11, starting from post 3 in the $10,200 conditioned event. If a list of consistent horses was ever compiled, Winter Blues would definitely make the grade. The son of Astreos has made 278 starts over his career, with a record of 37-37-37. Trainer Laurie Molnar was sent Winter Blues by owner Chad Colasanti to race in New Jersey after competing at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono. After a fourth-place finish on Nov. 19 at Freehold in his debut for Molnar, Winter Blues has since rattled off three consecutive victories—all at Free- hold—bringing his resume to 37s across the board (an on- the-board average of 39.9 percent). With Chris Scicluna in the sulky, Winter Blues started his win streak with a gate-to-wire, six-length romp in 1:55.2 on Nov. 26. He came back on Dec. 3, up a notch in class, and again led at every call to score by 2 ½ lengths in 1:56. Up in class again on Dec. 10, Winter Blues won in 1:57.2, this time closing from sixth at the three-quarters to win by three-quarters of a length. “At one point last week we were hoping to get a check and all of a sudden (Scicluna) tipped him and off he went,” remem- bered Molnar, who had 16 wins at the recently-concluded Free- hold meet. “It was pretty exciting. It made me pretty happy.” Winter Blues got away at odds of 11-1 last time out and, con- and looked at the board and he was 48-1. As with the other New York glaucine posi- tives that first surfaced in early February of this year, while trainers have been notified, the levels of glaucine in the tests have not been provided. Also, New York has taken no action on the glaucine positives from earlier this year. Following the outbreak of glaucine positives in New York, the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC) ap- pointed a committee to study the appearance of the alkaloid in post-race testing samples. The alkaloid in glaucine is found in plant species, includ- ing the tulip poplar tree, which is used for wood shavings. Horses, of course, are bedded on shavings. Glaucine is also used in bronchodilator and asthma medications found in some European countries—but not in the U.S. nor Canada—and thus available via the internet. The RMTC’s committee has been analyzing research previ- ously conducted on glaucine and also has contracted Trues- dail Laboratories in California to conduct additional research. The findings show that high glaucine levels are definitely possible from horses eating shavings. Dr. Dionne Benson, executive director and chief operating “Stress on the officer of the RMTC, said that part of tree can also the research involved taking sam- result in a ples from various points in a large, higher level of dumped load of shavings. glaucine in “At the end of the day, you can look shavings.” at a pile of shavings and take samples from several different parts of the pile –Dr. Dionne Benson and find a high reading of glaucine from one sample and absolutely no glaucine from a different sample,” said Dr. Benson. “And what we found is that there can be a variety of sources for the shavings. Stress on the tree can also result in a higher level of glaucine in shavings.” Shavings are often made from leftover waste of poplar trim moldings used in home construction. The tulip poplar tree contains the glaucine alkaloid, although levels can vary substantially from tree to tree. Because the alkaloids found in glaucine are also in the Euro- pean medications, the RMTC believes determining the differ- ences between glaucine levels that could occur from ingestion of shavings versus an injectable medication. There are two plant alkaloids in shavings that are not present when a high glaucine reading comes from an injectable. The alka- loids in injectables come from the yellow-horned poppy plant. “We’re looking to see if there’s a ratio that would reveal if the high glaucine reading from shavings versus the injecta- bles,” said Dr. Benson. “Once the research is done, we plan to make a recommendation to the industry about glaucine. Right now, each lab and state is on their own regarding test- ing for glaucine.”—By Kathy Parker HarnessRacing Weekend Preview, 10 of 12 December 16, 2016 www.harnessracing.com
