Having TPC and Mother’s Day on the same weekend is an interesting idea. On the one hand, there’s something for everybody in this issue of EU. Dad can enjoy the TPC coverage and Mom can make hints with all of the Mother’s Day suggestions. Another plus is that our Pub Crawl can work double-duty. Instead of selecting a neighborhood to drink through, this time we picked a couple of piano bars. The reason for this is obvious – Mom likes to sip on a nice cocktail or glass of wine while relaxing in an upscale place with great food and something a little more delightful crazy 88s dueling pianos than blaring live rock music. In the restaurant section of MacKenzies, you might hear the piano man’s voice and instrument wafting through as you dine on fine food, but it might not prepare you for the sense of fun present in the bar room. eujacksonville.com | may 10-16, 2007 15 the players championship by tom weppel Welcome one and all to TPC, a.k.a. The Players Championship. Some people make the mistake of calling this ‘the’ TPC, with ‘T’ standing for ‘Tournament’. But they are wrong in their speech. It is sim- ply, ‘TPC’, which stands for ‘The Players Championship’. And it certainly is The Players Championship, with all the big guns from the Tour here, as they do each year, to go after a huge wad of cash, on a course that has become very well-known within the golfing community. The Stadium Course, designed by the golf course architect Pete Dye, is a track that is well-respected and appreciated by Tour players and fans alike. From the signature 17th green and 18th fairway on down, this course is remembered and enjoyed for its difficulty of play and for its pure beauty to view and experience. As we all know, there are quite a few things that are different this year than from past tourna- ments. For one, the date has changed. In the past, TPC has been held in March, BEFORE The Masters, and DURING the NCAA Basketball Tournament, which of course cultivated the attention of all sports fans, leaving TPC high and dry. This year, the PGA Tour decided to schedule the tournament AFTER The Masters, in May, to give it a little breathing room from the NCAA’s and just a little bit more notoriety. TPC is also being played now because it is normally a little warmer this time of year, as opposed to the inconsistent climate we usu- ally encounter in March. Another noticeable difference will be the brand new clubhouse that was built on the Stadium Course grounds. Of course not many of us will be able to get into see ALL of the digs, but from the outside, it looks fabulous. Many of the players are telling us that the inside, particularly the lockerroom itself, is a sight to behold. It certainly has added glamour to this crown jewel of the PGA Tour. If you are going to the tournament, you will also get a chance to see the digital scoreboards that will dot the course, practically on every hole. These babies will give you anything and everything you could want, from bios on the players to statistics on the holes, and of course a ton of sponsoring ad- vertisements to boot. And so we shall see how these changes affect the tournament, from the players to the fans to the viewers. These days in the world of Golf, there is one and only one name that stands out above all others, and that name is Eldrick Woods. Tiger is simply dominating the sport like no other player in no other

Golf’s been given a whole new swing at The Players Championship at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra. Reno- vations to the course and, most notably, the debut of the new, deluxe seventy-seven thousand square foot clubhouse will further support the reputation of Sawgrass as one of the foremost golf courses in the country. The massive, lavish building’s sixty-five foot towers will be visible from 12 of the 18 holes on the course. The clubhouse itself has a view of the 9th and 18th holes, including a picturesque water hazard and a large lawn for spectators. “It basically has an architectural blueprint that celebrates that development of the First Coast area. Henry Flagler and the East Coast Railroad, back in the late 1800s and early 1900s, dotted the coast with luxury resorts for rich and famous people. Due to the fact that Mr. Flagler…traveled abroad quite a bit, he brought a European influence back into this country and built resorts in this style. So we built this property to mirror and be very respectful of the traditions of the history of Florida,” commented TPC Sawgrass general manger Bill Hughes. The clubhouse has indeed been built to look as though it has been part of the Florida landscape for many years, but includes every modern convenience. The new clubhouse will serve as a hospitality and en- tertainment facility for the tournament, but it’s sure to quickly become a destination for area golfers. As for the course itself, besides a few landscaping changes on the last three holes, Hughes says that most of the major changes were applied to “infrastructure things that no one can see.” They’ve installed a state-of-the-art drainage system which can dry out a sopping wet green in hours instead of days. “The idea of the renovation was to once again position the golf course as a facility that plays fast and firm [for]…the greatest players in the world.”

history made convenient World Golf Village to provide a history pavilion

Golf has a long and noble history in St. Johns County, due mostly to the annual Players tournament held at TPC. The World Golf Hall of Fame has created a History Pavilion for the 2007 Players Championship that will highlight that history, telling the stories of triumph and defeat on the course. “We are excited about the opportunity to tell the thousands of guests to the Players—many of whom are from out of town—some of the fascinating history behind the tournament, the World Golf Hall of Fame and St. Johns County overall,” said Jack Peter, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Hall of Fame. “The stories blend together well and help define the important role golf plays in this area.” The air-conditioned, four-thousand square foot facility will welcome guests as they enter the tourna- ment. A nearby food court and merchandise tent will provide guests with everything they need to enjoy and commemorate their experience at the Players. The exhibition will educate guests about past champions, emphasizing the tournament’s significance

Back in the old days, all telephones had cords and all cameras required film. If you still use one of those cameras, you have to take your film to Wal-Mart, where little elves work very hard to poorly develop your pictures. In case you didn’t know, it’s possible to develop film with a myriad of different techniques. When the revolution comes and all the Wal-Marts are destroyed by fire, most of us will have to make the switch to digital cameras. However, there are still a few artists who can develop their film without the help of evil corporate elves. The new exhibition at the Jane Gray Gallery features many of these artists, and the photos are more than just pretty pictures. The title of the show, Photoprocess, is more fitting than I first presumed. Cyanotypes. Kal- litypes. Polacolor image transfers. Ultra chroma- genic prints. Platinum prints. There’s not a single Wal-Mart print in the entire exhibition, and the Anna Tomczak variety of photographic developing processes is themselves and highly involved. I’m not sure, but I truly fascinating. Each photo is displayed in such doubt that any artist could bang out 24 prints in an a way that the viewer can see traces of all the hour. Such is not the case with these photo processes, which is one of the things that make them so interesting. Luckily, most of the artists have provided information on their art as well as a brief explana- tion of how they create it. For instance, a few of the artists use a 20 x 24 Polaroid camera, and Linda Broadfoot describes its use in her statement: “The camera, though measuring five feet in height and weighing 235 pounds, operates like any camera using Polaroid materials. The 20 x 24 inch film is exposed and then promptly pulled apart. The large negative sheet is then placed face down and squeegeed onto a piece of water-soaked Fab- riano, a smooth, hot-pressed watercolor paper that quickly absorbs and retains the dyes. The negative is allowed to sit on the paper for several minutes, and then is slowly and carefully peeled away. They don’t care for one an- other, for all intents and purposes. It can be said their personalities are opposite or different. They certainly don’t share small talk, and I think in a way that’s not a good thing. I blame Del Rio for that, being that he is the older, supposedly the more mature of the two humans, and as head coach, it is his job to get along with his players. It seems overall that Del Rio enjoys hanging much more with his Defensive side than the boys on the scoring side of the ball. Being that Jack played Linebacker during his NFL career, it makes sense. That doesn’t mean he can’t warm up to what’s going on with the Offense, though. We’ll see if he’s able to adjust his personality and attitude heading into the upcoming season.
