Craig Allsopp – President QLLA Board of Trustees – continued from page 1 you can view the building of the Quechee Vermont Farm- house by Bob Vila in 2001 at www.bobvila. com.) “It was the right price at what seemed the right time, so we bought it,” he says. “Little did we know a real estate crash was unfolding. We Craig and Jo were lucky enough to sell the lot on Fletcher. I wish I could say the same for our house in New Jersey. So much for planning.” Eventually they did sell their New Jersey house and there was no turning back. “We really like it here,” he says. “And so does our family. What a great place for our kids and grandkids to visit.” The Allsopps met playing softball at college—Davis & Elkins in Elkins, West Virginia. They married after graduation, and then moved to State College in Pennsylania where Allsopp went to graduate school at Penn State. They raised their three children—Drew, now in Rhode Island, Emily in Los Angeles and Erik in Portland, Oregon—in Pennington, New Jersy. Allsopp worked for Dow Jones, and was later CEO of a small publishing company. His background in journalism and business set the stage for his work now—advising small business owners on growth strategies. The Allsopps have two grandsons thanks to Drew and his wife, Lindsay—Elijah, 5 and Jasper, 1. Getting involved The Allsopps became immersed in Quechee soon after making it home. Jo volunteered at the library, and served on the Golf Committee. Allsopp joined the Strategic Planning Committee in 2009. “Jo and her friends ran most of the volunteer organizations in our town back in New Jersey,” he says, “and I coached kids soccer, and served on the boards of our local swim and golf clubs.” His philosophy centers on trying to add value. “I’ve worked with small teams, and managed far-flung groups. I figure if I can identify things that need to be done and think I can help solve a problem, I’ll get involved and give it a shot.” Allsopp was on the QLLA Greens Committee in 2014 when he was asked to run for the Board. He took over as treasurer in 2015, and then president this July. He chuckles at his time as treasurer. “I was an English major. I’ve got a working knowledge of finance, but Jo won’t let me near the checkbook at home,” he says, adding, “it’s a good thing we’ve got a good accounting staff to do the heavy lifting.” Role of Board of Trustees Allsopp explains that his view of the Board’s role is to set direction, allocate resources, and monitor performance. “QLAA is a $10 million operation with lots of moving parts,” he says. “I’m glad we have skilled managers and dedicated staffers to run the day to day.” As president, he believes the Board’s biggest challenge is balancing the needs of different member constituencies. “QLLA is like a jigsaw puzzle with 1375 pieces [members]; it’s not always easy to make them fit together.” He says he always wants the Board to be “member-centric” in its decision-making. “We want to get participation up,” he says, noting the member survey in 2014 revealed that barely more than 50% of members actively used QLLA ame- nities. “I think we’re starting to make headway with our policies and programs in areas like golf, tennis, fitness, and ski, but we’re still not where we want to be.” He notes usage of the new pool and increases in the number of golf rounds played since 2010 as positive signs. “There were times when I had to park on the grass this summer because the lot was full,” he says. “That more than anything— 31 years we’ve had the premier plus all the kids at the tennis and golf camps—says we’re on the right track.” Allsopp also cites increases in property transfers—to 68 through Septem- ber versus 59 for the same period last year—and meaningful developer activity as encouraging signs. Taurus made a business decision to resume investing in Quechee, and has five homes in the works now with plans to build 10 to 20 new The Quechee Times Holiday 2016 Page 11 homes a year in the foreseeable future. That’s a big change. There are also some interesting capital projects underway. The Board has authorized updates to the locker rooms and Deck Bar to make the member experience more enjoyable. And the playground at Lake Pinneo will be replaced with modern and safer equipment. “I consider these to be high-impact, relatively low-cost improvements,” he says. “I think we are in pretty good shape otherwise. The Facilities Planning Committee is looking to provide more space in the Base Lodge, but as far as big projects like the pool there is nothing in the short term. This will give us a chance to bank some money for the next big project.” He says overall QLLA is in good financial shape. “It looks like we will end 2016 ahead of budget and, thanks to previous Boards, we have a solid plan for capital improvements. “ “I think back—since we moved to Vermont, QLLA has endured a major recession, and a 100-year flood [Tropical Storm Irene]. We’ve made millions of dollars in improvements since then without any extra assessments. That’s pretty remarkable.” Speaking of Irene, I asked him about the Board’s view on the pocket parks issue and other town related matters. He said the town and FEMA—with prod- ding from Senator Leahey’s office—are trying to sort out their differences on the park design. Everything else is status quo. What’s next Allsopp says he and Jo are giving serious thought to getting an RV and trav- eling the country in the near future. Since moving to Vermont, they have taken golf trips to Scotland, Ireland, and Canada; and made visits to Switzerland and to Hawaii to celebrate their 40th anniversary. “There still are lots of courses to play, and mountains to ski,” he says. Meanwhile, he has a new job this year as a ski instructor at Killington. He won’t spend all his free time skiing there though. Elijah is ready for the chair lift at Quechee. “He was asking me this summer when he was at Kid’s Camp— which he loved—what the cows were doing on the ski hill. I explained that they share the space with us in the winter when they are in their warm barn.” It’s the magic of Quechee! n

Darby Laine he Dismas House is a non-profit organization that was first brought to Vermont in the 1980s by Frank and Rita McCaffrey. The original TDismas House began in 1974 in Nashville, Tennessee, as a program developed by Father Jack Hickey and a group of Vanderbilt University students. The Dismas name comes from Hickey’s original inspiration–Catholic tradition Dismas is the name of the penitent, or good thief, crucified on Calvary alongside Jesus. Dismas, is the thief that Jesus saves. The Dismas House reunites criminal offenders with the community, and it has been so successful that the original program model can be found in various forms nationally and internationally. In Vermont, the McCaffrey’s were known for their involvement in criminal justice reform. Frank McCaffrey was a lawyer and criminal court judge who has since retired, but when he and his wife, Rita, met Jack Hickey back in the 1980s they were determined to bring the Dismas program to the Green Mountain State. It was Rita who founded the Vermont Dismas, and the Hartford Dismas House, opened in March 2014, became the fourth Vermont location to open. The Hartford Dismas House supports 10 transitioning inmates at a time. Typi- cal residents stay from 4 to 8 months while paying $75 a week, this enables the residents to find work and save money, and it also saves taxpayer money by keeping inmates from remaining in prison past their release dates due to lack of housing. The Quechee communities’ involvement Locally, the Quechee Club has helped support the Hartford Dismas House from it’s beginning by donating food for the house’s inception party in 2014. Most recently, the Club hosted a successful dinner. It was a special night on all accounts–the benefit awarded Dan Fraser of the Norwich store Dan & Whits with the Jack Hickey Award for Dan’s support of the Dismas House. The Dan & Whit’s store has employed multiple Dismas House residents finding it a mutu- ally beneficial arrangement that will continue into the future. Suzanne Lyons, Penny McClure, and Christine McKenna were awarded the Jonathan Sylvia Vol- unteer of the Year Award for their consistent volunteer work. Kevin McDonough: Quechee Club Food and Beverage– continued from page 4 Après Ski parties in the winter in the Deck Bar area are another food and beverage option for people coming to the Club. With such a “bad” winter last year for snow and skiing, the Après Ski parties were well attended according to McDonough. Changes such as locating the buffet farther from the bar to give more room for children to play, and re-positioning the band, also farther from the bar, made it “more adult friendly while providing a venue where kids can have fun, too,” he says. It’s not all work McDonough and Amanda are planning their wedding for June of 2017 in Connecticut. A former ski racer, Amanda had been commuting from her job at Garnet Hill in Franconia, New Hampshire, but has recently started her own design business. Both like to ski as their work and other commitments allow. McDonough learned to ski and golf when he moved to the Upper Valley. He gets to golf once a week, “if he’s lucky.”

The special guest speaker was Chris Herren, a former professional basketball player from Massa- chusetts who was first drafted into the NBA to play for the Denver Nuggets, and later traded to the Celtics. Herren realized a dream that became unfortunately derailed by an addiction. He co-authored the book Basketball Junkie with Bill WILDER Reynolds, detailing his journey. Herren brought the same story of addiction and CONSTRUCTION, INC. recovery with him to the event on October 23. Assistant House Director of the Hartford Dismas Debbie Diegoli tells me that the event exceeded attendance and donation expectations. While the dona- BUILDING tions amounted to more than ever expected Diegoli doesn’t seem surprised by Quechee’s generosity, only completely grateful. Quechee residents have been REMODELING previous board members for the house, and she tells me that there are dedicated volunteers from Quechee community. The Dismas House was sad to see the CUSTOM Quechee Community Church close, as they had been non-stop supporters of CABINETRY the program as well. Previous to her current role with Dismas House, she was the outreach coor- dinator for several years. The overall resume Diegoli brought with her to The William W. Dow Dismas house speaks volumes for itself: she’s worked for the Lebanon Women’s Infants and Children (WIC) Program, Vital Communities, the Upper Valley 802-295-2915 Housing Coalition and Upper Valley Strong. Currently, she also serves as a Est. 1982 member of the Upper Valley Food Co-op board of directors, and volunteers for QLLA Approved Builder the Weathersfield Energy Group. Diegoli stresses the need for the relation between the Dismas House and the community. “We have relationships with all sorts of community organizations and businesses. Dismas’ mission is to reconcile prisoners with society and soci- ety with prisoners, so our connections with the community are essential.” The house is currently seeking board members and are in need of volunteers, espe- cially cooks. Carlson swam for The Selkies of the YMCA of the North Shore until the end of last year. For the past two seasons, she also swam for New England Synchro, another competitive team that com- bines athletes from other nearby towns. Last year, she and her New England Synchro team came in first in their age group at the U.S. Nationals. This coming year, she will be swimming with ANA Synchro in Andover, MA. Given all her swimming requirements, Carl- son isn’t able to compete on the Quechee Ski Team anymore. “She would love to compete [for Quechee] all winter, but the reality is that as she has become a more competitive swimmer she has had to make choices,” says her mom. Quechee Library

Charlotte Merrill has created wonderful ornaments that will be sold at a holiday afternoon tea on Friday, December 16.

Kate Schaal s we move past this presidential campaign, the Quechee Library is delighted to have been chosen by the Vermont Humanities Council Afor a Bill of Rights display from the National Archives Foundation. By mid-December, it will be standing in the library to remind us all of the power of the Bill of Rights, and the country’s still enduring system of government. We will be holding one or more talks focused particularly on the first, fourth, fifth, and sixth amendments. Watch the library website for details on programming, and do stop in and study the illustration of the founding fathers’ wisdom. See anew the list of amendments defining citizens’ rights in relation to a central government, including freedom of speech, religion, the press, and the right to due process of law. Meanwhile, on to the holidays: On November 25 at 4 p.m., there will be a drawing for ticket vouchers for A Christmas Carol performance. Again this year, Northern Stage in White River Junction, Vermont, has partnered with some area libraries to offer free tickets to their consistently excellent productions. Before then, visit the library and answer your choice of a question about theater and libraries to be entered to win a ticket voucher. On Wednesday, December 7, at 3 p.m., children are invited to the annual Friends’ Keepsake Ornament-Making workshop. Scores will gather to merrily proceed from one table to another making ten different projects. Ann DeLoach, Paula Pitts, Joan Baret, and other Friends each year come up with new orna- ments to delight every child—and every adult lucky enough to be in the vicinity. That same holiday spirit will be evident on Friday, December 16, for a bit of a “winterfest” at the library. Stop by between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. for some hot chocolate, tea, cookies, and a chance to purchase delightful felt ornaments made by Charlotte Merrill, as well as the Friends’ holiday cards, coffee mugs, and more. All proceeds will benefit our “book a square” carpet campaign. During the tea, there will be a “scribble bot” wrapping paper activity for kids. This simple introduction to “robotics” is enticing enough to intrigue people of any age, and all are welcome to participate. This will also be the day we draw the winning ticket vouchers for the next Northern Stage production, Trick or Treat, so be sure to stop in on this afternoon, or earlier in December to enter the contest. Library visitors have been enjoying a “community” jigsaw puzzle along with The Quechee Times Holiday 2016 Page 25

Needleworkers Unite is a welcoming group of knitters, cross stitchers and other textile makers who gather at the library on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. For kids, regular programs include Storytimes on Wednesdays at 10 a.m., and Friday Folk time for slightly older children at 10 a.m. Lego Club meets on Fridays at 3 p.m. through December 2. The library will be closed for Thanksgiving. As Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on Sundays, these holidays will be observed on Monday. Winter driving conditions may also cause some closings. Check the website at www.quecheeli- brary.org for such announcements as well as to keep up to date with library news, to browse our catalogs, access online resources, and reserve and renew items. Whatever the winter brings in the way of snow and temperatures, the library is a place to stock up for good times. Hours are: M,W.F, 10-6; T,Th, 2-7; and Sat., 9-2.n

The December 19 title is Stranger in a Strange Land, by Robert Heinlein. Considered a classic now, the book features a human raised on Mars who struggles to understand the prejudices he finds upon his arrival on earth. In the late 1990s, they were at a wedding in Woodstock and had some extra time. The Thomsons had been looking at property in New Hampshire, but Sue had friends from high school who used to come to Quechee, so they decided to visit Quechee. A few weeks later, they came up for a ski weekend with their two young kids—Steve and Ali— and were hooked.
