A rare exception to this is the Reaistre d'Inquisition de Jacques Fournier preserved in Vaticanus Latinus manuscript 4030 and published in three volumes by Jean Duvernoy.1 Jacques Fournier, who became Pope Benedict XII (1335- 1342) , was Bishop of Pamiers from 1317 to 1325 and zealously directed the local inquisition. For eight years he routinely interrogated those suspected of heresy and he meticulously recorded their depositions. The Fournier Register contains the 1Le reaistre d 1 inquisition de Jacques Fournier (1318- 1325). ed. Jean Duvernoy (Toulouse: Privat, 1965). A pamphlet of corrections appeared in 1972, and Duvernoy published a French translation of the Register (Mouton: Paris, 1978) under the same title. For the purposes of this dissertation I have, for the most part, relied on the Latin edition, and references to it will always carry the volume number (e.g. Reaistre. I, 128). Occasionally I make use of the French edition, especially for its index and Duvernoy's copious notes. The pagination of this edition is consecutive through all three volumes; so when I have recourse to it, no volume number is given (e.g. Reaistre. p. 1262). 1 testimony of 218 persons. Half were suspects; the other half, witnesses. Nearly all of them lived in the Comte de Foix, an area of southern France which today comprises the eastern half of the Department of Ariege. MS Vat. Lat. 4030, a book of parchment of 325 folios, is an official copy (i.e. made by sworn scribes) of the court proceedings that took place from 1318-1325. Fournier directed his assistants to perform the task when he was transferred from the diocese of Pamiers to that of Mirepoix in 1326. They produced two volumes, one of which is lost. The other has come down to us in the form of the Fournier Register.2 The truly remarkable thing which makes the Register a unique document is that the majority of these witnesses were peasants! And a talkative lot they were. The bishop was hunting Cathar heretics, but the villagers commented on everything from their families and flocks to their fears of the unknown. They told fascinating stories, and nowhere else do we find medieval peasants talking about themselves in such detail. This manuscript was first brought to the attention of historians by Charles Molinier, a professor at the University of Toulouse. In 1880 Molinier published his study of the inquisition in the Midi and its sources.3 Four years later the 2For a brief history and description of the MS see Duvernoy, Reaistre. Ministre de 1'Instruction Publique commissioned him to search for other relevant documents in Italy. Molinier visited libraries in Milan, Lacques, Florence and Rome in the spring of 1885. In 1887 he published his findings.4 Among the many records that he found he recognized MS Vat. Lat. 4030 as the most important. Although Molinier was interested primarily in the history, processes and personnel of the inquisition, the uniqueness of the document was not lost on him, and he suggested that there were a number of interesting details beyond the technical ones.5 Molinier's discovery reverberated in the historical community and generated several analyses and articles based upon the manuscript. A thesis presented to the Department of History Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Brandeis University Waltham, Massachusetts By Elizabeth Jensen The Occitanian Cathars were among the most successful heretics in medieval Europe. In order to combat this heresy the Catholic Church ordered preaching campaigns, passed ecclesiastic legislation, called for a crusade and eventually turned to the new mechanism of the Inquisition. Understanding why the Cathars were so popular in Occitania and why the defeat of this heresy required so many different mechanisms entails exploring the development of Occitanian culture and the wider world of religious reform and enthusiasm. This paper will explain the origins of popular piety and religious reform in medieval Europe before focusing in on two specific movements, the Patarenes and Henry of Lausanne, the first of which became an acceptable form of reform while the other remained a heretic. This will lead to a specific description of the situation in Occitania and the attempts to eradicate the Cathars with special attention focused on the way in which Occitanian culture fostered the growth of Catharism. In short, Catharism filled the need that existed in the people of Occitania for a reformed religious experience.

  • Vicdessos S'étend Sur Une Partie Des Deux Massifs Nord-Pyrénéens Des Trois Seigneurs Et Du Saint-Barthélémy Et Sur La Zone Axiale
    NOTICE EXPLICATIVE INTRODUCTION On distingue d'une façon générale dans les Pyrénées françaises : la Zone axiale formée de Cristallin et de Paléozoïque et les Massifs nord-pyrénéens, également constitués de terrains anciens, mais surgissant au sein des chaînes de terrains mésozoïques et cénozoïques développées au Nord de la Zone axiale. La feuille Vicdessos s'étend sur une partie des deux massifs nord-pyrénéens des Trois Seigneurs et du Saint-Barthélémy et sur la Zone axiale. En ce qui concerne cette dernière, la feuille couvre en effet une vaste extension du massif cristallophyllien de l'Aston et l'extrémité du massif granitique de Bassiès (Auzat), ainsi que le faisceau de Paléozoïque plissé longeant la bordure de l'Aston. Des chaînes de terrains mésozoïques plus ou moins métamorphisés séparent les trois grands éléments structuraux : Zone axiale, Trois Seigneurs, Saint- Barthélémy. La chaîne de Vicdessos conflue dans les montagnes entourant Ussat avec celle qui suit parallèlement à la vallée de l'Ariège la bordure du massif du Saint-Barthélémy. TERRAINS SÉDIMENTAIRES E. Éboulis, dépôts de remaniement. Les éboulis clastiques et dépôts de remaniement sur les pentes sont par place très développés, tant dans la partie cristalline du domaine de la feuille Vicdessos, dans la Zone primaire axiale, que sous les escarpements calcaires de |a région nord- pyrénéenne. Pour ces derniers, les eaux calcaires ont pu cimenter les éboulis en brèches de pente.

    History of the Crusades. Episode 111. The Crusade Against The Cathars. The Origins Of The Cathars. Hello again. Last week we took a closer look at southern France on the eve of the Crusade Against the Cathars. This week we will take a look at the Cathars themselves. In a nutshell, the Cathars were religious devotees who had strayed so far from the orthodox teachings of the Latin Church that not only were they viewed as heretics, there were many who questioned whether they could even be classed as Christians. Central to their belief was the distinction between the temporal and the eternal, the dark and the light, the material and the spiritual. To the Cathars, the material world was the realm of the devil; only the spiritual world was pure and divine. Unsurprisingly then, they rejected material possessions, preached celibacy, and spurned many pleasures of the material world. They had no churches, no holy objects, and their spiritual leaders, known as the "Perfect", wore only common everyday clothes. The Perfect were vegetarians, although everyday Cathars could eat whatever food they liked. They rejected the sacraments of the Catholic Church, and had only one ritual of their own, called the "Consolamentum". The Consolamentum was used to ordain a new Perfect, or to prepare dying Cathars for their journey from the base, evil, material world into the pure, spiritual one. Cathars rejected the Old Testament, taking for their own scriptures the New Testament, particularly the Gospel According to St John. These were translated into the language of Southern France, Languedoc, and circulated amongst the Cathars.
