A Special Message to Farmers . . New Supergrow from Eastern lets you put more money in the bank and less money in the ground.

Only one plant food formulated in North or South Carolina lets you apply exactly the nutrients your

crop, field and yield call for — and nothing more. It's SUPERGROW, the prescription plant food that never adds anything you don't need to soil. You can be

sure of that because SUPERGROW is based on our in- house computer analysis of your soil and your need.

If you've known us up to now mainly as distribution experts, SUPERGROW will change that. You'll look to us from now on as plant food specialists who

provide you with the exact formula out of 1 60,000 possibilities — that makes every crop a money crop! GREENVILLE- SPARTANBURG AREA farmers and dealers are served from our plant just off 1-85 at Greer. These Steps Make Every Plant Food Penny Pay Off:

Using one of our four-wheel-drive vehicles equipped for automated soil sampling, trained personnel takesoil samples for independent laboratory analysis.

Automated controls at each location precisely meter out those nutrients for the plant food "prescription" that feeds your crop with no waste.

This means you spend money only for the plant food you need for the yield you want — never for nutrients already present — and you bank the rest.

Since its founding in 1 893, the story of Clemson University has been one of constant growth in an atmosphere of tradition. Where 446 students first met for courses in agriculture and engineer-

ing, more than 1 1 ,000 young people now pursue these two fields as well as architecture, education, forestry, industrial and recreational management, textile science, nursing, liberal arts and the social, bio- logical, physical and mathematical sciences. In terms of academic excellence, the quality of both students and faculty is high. More than two-thirds of the freshmen who entered Clemson this fall graduated in the top 20 percent of their high school classes. The University last year produced two Fulbright-Hays Scholars and a Truman Scholar, and The Tiger was named one of the best student newspapers in the country. Several Clemson faculty members are officers in major professional societies or editors of major jour- nals. The campus was also the site last year for na- tional and international meetings of poultry scientists and materials researchers.

Though Tillman Hall still stands as a treasured landmark and

a symbol of Clemson's heritage, it no longer stands alone. Today the University campus includes 600 acres of acad emic buildings,

CLEMSONstudent housing, service facilities and equipment valued at $161 million. In addition to the nuclear campus, Clemson encompasses more than 30,000 additional acres of experimental farms and woodlands throughout the state. 9 A CONCRETE COMMITMENT

What better way to state a commitment than to

put it in concrete. And that's exactly what our new manufacturing plant in Martin, South Carolina signifies — Sandoz' commitment to provide quality dyes and chemicals to the industries we serve. This new facility, situated on a 4,600 acre

tract, represents an initial multi-million dollar investment. The complex, aside from the production unit containing the latest in dye and chemical manufacturing equipment, also includes a modern technical support center, expansive warehouse, administrative offices, and the necessary peripheral structures for power, maintenance and environmental controls.

The Sandoz Martin Works is now on-stream about the same time other sources have changed in

mid-stream. Sandoz is committed to the viability of the dye and chemical consuming industries.

This is a concrete commitment.

During 1978-79, Clemson University enjoyed its greatest all-around athletic year ever. This excellence was docu- mented last August when The Knox- ville Journal released its annual nationwide all-sports study. The re- searchers found that Clemson had the fourth best all-around sports program in the United States. Only UCLA, Southern California, and Arkansas scored more points than the Tigers. And the man directly responsible for the Tigers' rise and continued success among the major college powers is Ath- letic Director Bill McLellan. Only the third man to own the title of Athletic Director over the past 48 years, McLellan assumed his present position

February 4, 1971 , and since that date has directed the Tigers through their greatest decade ever of national athlet- ic prominence. Four years in a row Clemson has been ranked in the top 25 in the all-sports poll.

In all, 18 of Clemson's 19 varsity sports sent an individual or a team to post-season action. McLellan's dedication to continued growth and development of Clemson's facilities is another major reason for the Tigers' meteoric rise on the sports scene. During his tenure the Tigers have christened the Frank Johnstone Jervey Athletic Center, possibly the most modern and complete complex under one roof, increased the perma- nent seating of Clemson Memorial Stadium from 43,451 to 53,306, opened a beautiful swimming facility which will be the site of ACC Swimming Championships over the next two years, and constructed a nine-lane all-weather track where the '78 ACC Meet was held. Use common sense every day. Save a few dollars every month.

With what electricity costs to make and distribute these days, it's just not the dirt-cheap commodity

it used to be. And, as a result, your monthly bill is probably higher now.

But remember: the amount of money you're billed each month is determined solely by the amount

of electricity you use. And the amount of electricity you use is determined solely by you.

So use it wisely. Turn your thermostat down a few degrees in the winter, and up a few degrees in the summei Switch off lights you don't need, and appliances you aren't using. Because whenever you waste power, you waste dol-

lars. And it doesn't make sense to do that. SCE&G Sam B. Phillips, Jr.

Assistant Clemson track coach Dean Matthews is "one of the top 20 runners in the world" according to the ink on a

resolution passed May 1 by the South Carolina General As- sembly. You won't get much argument about that claim from

j| marathon fans who've seen his statistics: — In his very first marathon race Feb. 3 in Columbia, Matthews took second in the Carolina Marathon, beating gualifying time for an Olympic marathon (two hours, 21 minutes, 54 seconds) by better than a minute. — He didn't place so well in his second marathon attempt, taking only a 12th spot in the 26-mile, 385- yard course. But that was in the prestigious Boston Marathon in April, where Matthews ran in a field of more than 8,000 and sported a world-class time of under two hours, 15 minutes. Matthews' more recent distance running competi- tion has been egually impressive: — A first-place finish in the FmAir Marathon Series in Atlanta (lowest total time in three separate 8-mile, 9-mile, and 10,000-meter races) won him an expense-paid trip to Finland, where Matthews took second in a half-marathon race. He calls the Finland finish "a personal best." - Back in Atlanta July 4, Matthews placed seventh from a field of more than 20,000 in the 10,000-meter Peachtree Road Race. Ahead of Matthews were six national and world record-holders. Di- rectly behind him were two more. Matthews may be relatively new to marathon racing, but he's cer- tainly no stranger to running. As an undergraduate track team member at Clemson, Matthews won two ACC championships in track and cross country.

The Lakewood, N. J., native still holds Tiger records in the 5,000-meter run (14:26), steeplechase (9:01), and the indoor mile run (4:13). Matthews, who received his B.A. degree in administrative management in

1 977 and his M.Ed, in personnel services in May, says he'll continue to tram at Clemson for the Olympic Trials in Buffalo, N. Y., in May 1980. "I've had to increase my training from 70 or 80 miles a week to about 120," he says. " "But I'm on the way up. And my attitude is I'm going.'

43 New openings from Honda.

At Honda we have never believed in making lots of different types of cars. But 1979 is a different kind of year for Honda. We've introduced two new cars. The Accord 4-Door Sedan and the Honda Prelude. You might say we've opened things up a bit. Literally. Our new Prelude boasts a power-operated, tinted glass moonroof as standard equipment. The moonroof comes with a manual sunshade, like the window shade on a jetliner.

Not only does our new Accord sedan have four doors, it has a nice, big trunk as well. It also has a lever that allows you to release the lid from the driver's seat.

So if you're thinking about buying a new car, take a close look at our new Hondas. And open the door to simplicity. rHR1f?JR5n LjU RfeHriH HHul HHflH hAm

JIM STUCKEY- Clemson 's Relatively Wild All-American By Tim Bourret wants to be the best player at his position in America and that is one of the reasons he is such a fine player. "Coach Mike Bugar has a quote in large letters in his office that reads, a defensive player's value to his team can be measured by how close he is to the ball at the end of each play.' Stuckey is near the ball at the end of every play. He prides himself on second effort." But Jim Stuckey does more than prepare his mind for the football season. Few de- fensive tackles in the nation have a more fine-tuned body. "Most guys have either

strength or quickness, but I like to think I have both assets. The best way to achieve

both is to lift weights. I've been lifting since

I've been in the ninth grade and I will con-

tinue to lift as long as I play football.

"It takes a lot of discipline and an or-

ganized program, but if you want to be suc-

cessful you've got to do it. Coach George Dostal (Clemson's weight training coach) has done a great job for me and all the players with our weight training program.

"I work hardest in the winter and summer

months. I usually workout for two hours a day, three days a week in the off-season.

That way I really never get out of shape and those early season workouts in the fall are not as taxing."

"Sure I have to play with abandon but the best Stuckey has been a hard worker for three approach is to have controlled wildness. That years and he has been justly rewarded. The 5-9 junior from Owerri, Nigeria has been dividing his practice time between

football and soccer this fall. A striker in soccer, Ariri came to Clemson on a soccer scholarship in 1976. He was one of Clemson's leading scorers with 15 goals for a team that advanced to the final four of the NCAA. He came out of retire- ment last fall to play in the NCAA tourna- ment, but other than that limited action, he has not played a full season of soccer since his freshman year. Ibrahim does have some very talented players returning from last year's 18-1-1 team. Marwan Kamaruddin is the leading returning scorer from 1978. He was a first- team all-conference performer in 1977 and a second team choice last year. Damian Odoh and Michael Gribbon are as fine a duo of backs as any in the league. Odoh has been selected to the AII-ACC team the last two years. Gribbon is a veteran player who has been slowed by injuries most of his career, but he has managed to earn four letters. Clemson's deepest position is in goal. John Bruens and Bill Finneyfrock are a pair AII-ACC Back Damian Odoh of seniors who have both started during their excellent careers. The former started every NCAA playoff game last year, and has a career goals-against average of 0.5. Clemson Soccer — The latter recorded five shutouts last year in leading the team in saves with 45.
