News in SACS Cricket Each week an award is given to a junior boy (u14 or u15) and senior boy (opens) who has produced an outstanding performance during their match. This can be either for bowling or batting. This is called the Dr Melle Cup. Dr BG Melle was the SACS Rhodes Scholar in 1911. He played for Western Province and Oxford University before the war. His son MG Melle toured England with South Africa in 1951. This week’s winners are: Senior: Kyle Zacks for 50 not against Newlands. (Pictured left) Junior: Oliver whitehead for scoring 48, 101 and 25 not out. (Pictured right Mr Willows wants to give special mention to the moms and dads who helps out over the weekends with teas and in particular the captain’s moms. We also give thanks to Mr Martin Van Staden the Catering Manager of the hostel for providing the boys with lovely lunches. SACS 1st XI 186/8 SACS won by 2 wickets 1st Team vs Newlands Cricket School– 50 Over (2019/02/02) SACS 1st hosted Newlands Cricket School on Saturday on the De Villiers Field. The opposition won the toss and decided to bat first in a 50 over game. The match started with a tinge of sadness, as Mr Willows our cricket pro, had lost his father two days prior to the match. The boys wore black armbands as a sign of respect and observed a minutes silence before taking the field. SACS bowled Newlands out for 184. This was probably our worst bowling and fielding perfomance of the season. We conceded 47 extras and were very sloppy in the field, dropping catches, missing run-outs and stumping opportunities. The best bowling performances were from Michael Levitt with 2 for 24 in 6 overs, Matthew Klusener with 2 for 27 in 10 overs and Rihaz Fredericks with 2 for 28 in 5 overs. SACS batted next and were going along at a lick with Daniel Smith in great form until he was run out for 14. Hlumani Msutu was joined by Kai Curran and the two put on a good display of attacking batsmenship before Hlumani had a rush of blood and was stumped for 29 runs. Kai continued to bat beautifully and reached his fifty with consecutive sixes and then promptly threw his wicket away with a rash shot. This started a procession of wickets falling and at the halfway mark we needed 47 runs to win with 5 wickets in hand. La’eeq Cooper and Nathan Ansell put on 37 runs befor Cooper gifted his wicket and was immediately followed by Welsh. Our 8th wicket went down when Matthew Klusener was bowled with us still needing 5 runs for victory. Nathan Ansell hit the winning four a few balls later and ended on a match-winning 25 not out. This was not one of our best performances and leaves much to contemplate and to work on before next week’s tough match against Grey High School. However we were gratefull for the win!! Result: SACS win by 2 wickets 2nd Team vs Newlands Cricket School- T20 On Friday the second cricket team played against Newlands Cricket school in a T20 match. SACS won the toss and decided to bat first. After losing an early wicket Luke D`Aguiar started to hit some brilliant shots together with Robbie Baynham. Unfortunately Just as they started to build a good partnership Robbie lost his wicket. Kai Greig came in and played an excellent innings and went out on 51 runs. A second 50 in two consecutive matches. Luke continued his good spell and batted through the twenty overs ending on 55 runs. The Newlands cricket school started their innings chasing a total of 165 runs set by the SACS boys. With some good bowling from the SACS bowlers and great work behind the wicket from Kai Greig the wickets of Newlands cricket school fell regularly. The Newlands cricket school struggled to get any partnership going but kept on fighting. With their total on 71 the last wicket fell with a great catch by Stefan Grobelaar. SACS won by 94 runs. 3rd Team vs Newlands Cricket School– T20 The 3rd team lost the toss and were put into the field on a hot Friday afternoon. The boys were very keen to bounce back after the loss against Rondebosch. The opening bowlers, Luka Botha and Simon Lotz started well and each picked up a couple of wickets a piece. Luka was very good and managed to get a lot of swing with the new ball. Blake Beining came onto bowl and although he didn’t pick up any wickets, he was superb and troubled the batsman. The bowl always seemed to miss the wickets, bat and pads. The field was a lot better and some superb work by Ethan Smyth and James Royden-Turner saw each of them getting a run-out. Raaez Salie came into the attack and produced figures of 4 runs for 3 wickets. This saw Newlands all out for 94. Newly promoted Kyle Zacks and Thomas Cowen opened the batting. Both of them were scoring a high rate. The runs were flowing however and unlucky runout saw Thomas heading back to the pavilion. Captain Judd Raichmann came out onto the middle and just knocked the ball around. Kyle kept on hitting the ball to all corners of the park. This saw Kyle reach 50 as he hit the winning runs. SACS won by 9 wickets. 5th Team vs Tygerberg – 35 Over The fifth team travelled to Tygerberg for a 35 over a side fixture against Tygerberg’s second II. The home team won the toss and elected to bat on a slightly damp, well grassed wicket. The two SACS opening bowlers, Reece Nunnerley (0 for 9 in 4 overs) and Keagan Osborne (3 for 12 in 7), restricted the score to 23 for the loss of 3 wickets during the first 8 overs, even with the field restrictions in place. This set the scene for a very good bowling performance by SACS. Jaydan Peskin (3 for 16 in 4 overs), Aidan Bernard (2 for 4 in 3 overs) and Matthew Beck (4 for 1 in 4 overs) all contributed to bowl the home team out for 65 runs in the 24th over. The bowling was supported by a good performance in the field. The SACS batsmen made quick work in reaching the target in the 17th over for the loss of 4 wickets. All the batsmen were dismissed in trying to play a big shot to early in their innings. Opener Aydan Wiggill was the backbone of the run chase with a well-played 21 not out. Result: SACS won by 6 wickets Best bowler: Keagan Osborne – 3 for 12 Best batsman: Aydan Wiggill – 21 n.o. U14A vs Newlands Cricket School – 50 Over The game turned out to be a very one-sided match with SACS dominating from start to finish (the only worry being the 12 wides we gifted the opposition). The toss was won by NCHS who elected to bat first. The first wicket fell in the second over – poor calling and a misunderstanding leading to the first of 2 such run outs. Wickets were lost at regular intervals, with Nick Kenny being the chief destroyer (3/10 in 6 overs), ably assisted by form-bowler, Thomas Klusener (3/27 in 8 overs). 88 all out was the visitors’ final total. Our batting was slow due to many wides by the opposition. New opener, Wayne Mandabva, was looking good on 8 when he was adjudged out to an LBW shout. Oliver Whitehead, fresh off a century, joined Josh Opperman. They knocked off the remainder of the runs in double-time. We reached our target in the 14th over. Thank you to Mr Nadeem Ahmed who assisted me in the absence of Mr Daniel Kessler. Result: SACS won by 9 wickets.
