Good Times – the Complete Series GOOD TIMES – THE COMPLETE SERIES Short Synopsis: The Good Times are back! Relive the '70s sitcom smash from producer Norman Lear and executive producer Bud Yorkin. A spin-off of Maude, which was itself a spin-off of All In The Family, Good Times first aired in February 1974 and viewers of all races and ages instantly connected with the Evans family. Money was scarce, but laughs and love were abundant for Florida (Esther Rolle), her hard-working husband James (John Amos), and their three kids living in the projects of South Side Chicago. From the outrageous antics of budding artist J.J., to the romantic dramas of sister Thelma and pint-sized Michael's activist causes, these parents have their hands full. Adding to the fun was next-door neighbor, sassy divorcee Willona, who would later in the series adopt a young daughter, Penny, played by superstar Janet Jackson! Tackling topical, sometimes even controversial, subject matter with wit and sensitivity, Good Times was a breakthrough series in many ways. Target Audience: All Ages Notable Cast/Crew: Produced by Normal Lear who also produced All in the Family and The Jeffersons Starring: Esther Rolle (Driving Miss Daisy), Jimmie Walker (Airplane!), John Amos, Ja’net DuBois, Ralph Carter, BernNadette Stanis, Janet Jackson and more Key selling points: • Ran for 6 seasons and was nominated for 3 Golden Globe® Awards • The first 3 seasons ranked in Nielsen’s top 24 TV shows. • Considered a breakthrough series for American television Trailer Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mv_0zbpOoHA Title UPC Item # Format Genre SRP Aspect Ratio Rating Runtime # Disc hrs GOOD TIMES – THE COMPLETE SERIES 826831071503 07150 DVD TV $44.98 $xx.xx No Rating 11 min..

  • From Conformity to Protest: the Evolution of Latinos in American Popular Culture, 1930S-1980S
From Conformity to Protest: The Evolution of Latinos in American Popular Culture, 1930s-1980s A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in the partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History of the College of Arts and Sciences 2017 by Vanessa de los Reyes M.A., Miami University, 2008 B.A., Northern Kentucky University, 2006 Committee Chair: Stephen R. Porter, Ph.D. Abstract “From Conformity to Protest” examines the visual representations of Latinos in American popular culture—specifically in film, television, and advertising—from the 1930s through the early 1980s. It follows the changing portrayals of Latinos in popular culture and how they reflected the larger societal phenomena of conformity, the battle for civil rights and inclusion, and the debate over identity politics and cultural authenticity. It also explores how these images affected Latinos’ sense of identity, particularly racial and ethnic identities, and their sense of belonging in American society. This dissertation traces the evolution of Latinos in popular culture through the various cultural anxieties in the United States in the middle half of the twentieth century, including immigration, citizenship, and civil rights. Those tensions profoundly transformed the politics and social dynamics of American society and affected how Americans thought of and reacted to Latinos and how Latinos thought of themselves. This work begins in the 1930s when Latin Americans largely accepted portrayals of themselves as cultural stereotypes, but longed for inclusion as “white” Americans. The narrative of conformity continues through the 1950s as the middle chapters thematically and chronologically examine how mainstream cultural producers portrayed different Latino groups—including Chicanos (or Mexican Americans), Puerto Ricans, and Cubans.

Popular television shows like Good Times, so infused with progressive ideals and issues of social relevance, were able to convey a normative view of “the projects” as an inherently failed space. This article presents a history of cultural translation and racial relations against a backdrop of American housing policy in the post-war era. The 1970s television show, Good Times, which earned the status as one of the fi rst “black sitcoms,” told the story of a morally strong family enduring life in “the projects” of Chicago. Experiencing a kind of racialized modernity, social mobility for the Evans family was continually fraught and “progress” was agonizingly and circularly deferred in weekly half- hour segments. In their perpetual struggle, the show’s characters can be seen as engaged with what Cornel West has called the “ignoble paradox of modernity.”1 (West 1999, 53) It’s serious themes, though, were punctuated by witty lines and the enigmatic catchphrase “Dyn-o-mite!” emphatically uttered by the family’s eldest son and star of the show, J.J.

In 1921 she left Florida for New York, where her artistic talents won her a prize spot at Cooper Union. Nevertheless, her obstacles were many: her application for a government-sponsored summer program in France was refused on the basis of her race, an incident that made international news. Soon thereafter she was awarded the coveted Prix de Rome, (Rome Prize) but sadly had to turn it down when she was unable to secure travel and living expenses. Married three times, her marital life was equally tragic, as two of her husbands died young. She would keep the surname of her second husband, James Savage, throughout her career. A number of important commissions would follow, including portrait busts of African-American authors and civil rights leaders W.E.B. Du Bois, James Weldon Johnson, and Marcus Garvey. In the 1930s she founded the Savage Studio of Arts and Crafts; among her students were painters Jacob Lawrence and Gwendolyn Knight.
