Some Observations on the Weddings of Tokugawa Shogun’s Daughters – Part 2 Abstract This section discusses the complex psychological and philosophical reason for Shogun Yoshimune’s contrasting handlings of his two adopted daughters’ and his favorite son’s weddings. In my thinking, Yoshimune lived up to his philosophical principles by the illogical, puzzling treatment of the three weddings. We can witness the manifestation of his modest and frugal personality inherited from his ancestor Ieyasu, cohabiting with his strong but unconventional sense of obligation and respect for his benefactor Tsunayoshi. A New Examination of Confucius' Rectification of Names
Journal of chinese humanities � (���6) �47-�7� brill.com/joch A New Examination of Confucius’ Rectification of Names Cao Feng (曹峰) Professor of Philosophy, Renmin University, China [email protected] Translated by Brook Hefright Abstract Confucius’ explanation of the “rectification of names” is not necessarily related to the theories of “social status” and “names and actuality.” The reason scholars have inter- preted the rectification of names in the Analects in so many different ways is, to a large degree, due to assumptions about Confucius’ thinking by his successors, and based on the views on rectification of names among later generations. In the course of the devel- opment of thinking about names, scholars have augmented Confucius’ own explana- tion, gradually fleshing it out from an empty shell into a substantial edifice. The original meaning may have been very simple: Confucius did not wish to establish a standard system of names. Rather, he was simply the first person in history to realize the impor- tance of language in politics. As a politician, Confucius noticed and foresaw the influ- ence that the indeterminacy, ambiguity, and arbitrariness of names could have on politics. He discerned the political consequences when language could not accurately express meaning or when there was no way for people to accurately perceive it. He also recognized how names, as a way of clarifying right and wrong and establishing norms, could have a great effect on a society’s politics. Although Confucius noted that disunity in speech could lead to disunity in politics, he did not propose a solution. -

The objects examined include one such handscroll painting, several illustrated books from the Sakamaki-Hawley Collection, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Library, and Hokusai Ryūkyū Hakkei, an 1832 series of eight landscape prints depicting sites in Okinawa. Drawing upon previous scholarship on the role of popular publishing in forming conceptions of “Japan” or of “national identity” at this time, a media discourse approach is employed to argue that such publications can serve as reliable indicators of understandings -

NOT WRITING AS A KEY FACTOR IN LANGUAGE ENDANGERMENT: THE CASE OF THE RYUKYU ISLANDS Patrick Heinrich Dokkyo University, Tokyo Abstract: Language shift differs from case to case. Yet, specifi c types of language shift can be identifi ed. Language shift in the Ryukyu Islands is caused by the socioeconomic changes resulting from the transition from the dynastic realms of the Ryukyu Kingdom and the Tokugawa Shogunate to the modern Meiji state. We call the scenario of shift after the transition from a dynastic realm to a modern state ‘type III’ language shift here. In type III, one language adopts specifi c new functions, which undermine the utility of other local or ethnic languages. The dominance of one language over others hinges, amongst other things, on the extent to which a written tradition existed or not. In the Ryukyu Kingdom, Chinese and Japanese were employed as the main languages of writing. The lack of a writing tradition paved the way for the Ryukyuan languages to be declared dialects of the written language, that is, of Japanese. Such assessment of Ryukyuan language status was fi rst put forth by mainland bureaucrats and later rationalized by Japanese national linguistics. Such a proceeding is an example of what Heinz Kloss calls near-dialectization. In order to undo the effects thereof, language activists are turning to writing in order to lay claim to their view that the endangered Ryukyuan Abstand languages be recognized as languages. Introduction This chapter reviews the current state of Japanese-Ryukyuan and Korean internal reconstruction and applies the results of this research to the historical comparison of both families. Reconstruction within the families shows proto-Japanese-Ryukyuan (pJR) and proto-Korean (pK) to have had very similar phonological inventories, with no laryngeal contrast among consonants and a system of six or seven vowels. The main challenges for the comparativist are working through the consequences of major changes in root structure in both languages, revealed or hinted at by internal reconstruction. These include loss of coda consonants in Japanese, and processes of syncope and medial consonant lenition in Korean. The chapter then reviews a small number (50) of pJR/pK lexical comparisons in a number of lexical domains, including pronouns, numerals, and body parts. These expand on the lexical comparisons proposed by Martin (1966) and Whitman (1985), in some cases responding to the criticisms of Vovin (2010). It identifies a small set of cognates between pJR and pK, including approximately 13 items on the standard Swadesh 100 word list: „I‟, „we‟, „that‟, „one‟, „two‟, „big‟, „long‟, „bird‟, „tall/high‟, „belly‟, „moon‟, „fire‟, „white‟ (previous research identifies several more cognates on this list). The paper then concludes by introducing a set of cognate inflectional morphemes, including the root suffixes *-i „infinitive/converb‟, *-a „infinitive/irrealis‟, *-or „adnominal/nonpast‟, and *-ko „gerund.‟ In terms of numbers of speakers, Japanese-Ryukyuan and Korean are the largest language isolates in the world. -

McMahon Ying Zhang Copyright by Chad Michael Berry 2014 Abstract In March 1879, Japan announced the end of the Ryukyu (Liuqiu) Kingdom and the establishment of Okinawa Prefecture in its place. For the previous 250 years, Ryukyu had been a quasi-independent tribute-sending state to Japan and China. Following the arrival of Western imperialism to East Asia in the 19th century, Japan reacted to the changing international situation by adopting Western legal standards and clarifying its borders in frontier areas such as the Ryukyu Islands. China protested Japanese actions in Ryukyu, though Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) leaders were not willing to go to war over the islands. Instead, Qing leaders such as Li Hongzhang (1823-1901) and Prince Gong (1833-1898) sought to resolve the dispute through diplomatic means, including appeals to international law, rousing global public opinion against Japan, and, most significantly, requesting the mediation of the United States and former U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885). Initially, China hoped Grant’s mediation would lead to a restoration of the previous arrangement of Ryukyu being a dually subordinate kingdom to China and Japan. In later negotiations, China sought a three-way division of the islands among China, Japan, and Ryukyu. -

Intercultural Communication Studies IX-1 Fall 1999-0 Hoffer - Review REVIEW Multilingual Japan. John C. Maher and Kyoko Yashiro, editors. Clevedon, UK: Multilingual Matters. 1995. Multilingual Japan, a special issue of the Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Matters, edited by John C. Maher and Kyoko Yashiro, is an excellent book from which to learn more about the language and cultural history and status of Japan. The stereotype that Japan is a unique monolingual/ monocultural country is one that refuses to go away. All countries are unique and, as they make clear, Japan has never been monolingual and monocultural. We need more such serious empirical studies like that conducted by Maher and Yashiro to help change the rather resistant attitudes of the government and a segment of the population at large. On the more than 3000 islands which stretch from Hokkaido almost to Taiwan, the languages which are present in identifiable numbers include Japanese, Ainu, the various types of Ryukyuan languages, Korean, Chinese, English, and some languages from Southeast Asia. Maher and Yashiro note that required English courses have produced millions of Japanese with some level of bilingual ability and that the large number of Japanese families which have returned after lengthy stays abroad means that there is a large number of bilinguals involving several of the world's languages. Japan is and has been a multilingual country with a large number of bilinguals in the mainstream of society. Matsumori's chapter covers Ryukyuan, a cover term for a group of languages which are spoken in the southern islands of Japan and which have a close relation to the Japanese language. -

SONG- Part I INTRODUCTORY ESSAYS Mitsugu Sakihara Ryukyuan Resources at the University of Hawaii Okinawan Studies in the United St9-tes During the 1970s RYUKYUAN RESOURCES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII Introduction The resources for Ryukyuan studies at the University of Hawaii, reportedly the best outside of Japan, have attracted many scholars from Japan and other countries to Hawaii for research. For such study Ryukyu: A Bibliographical Guide to Okinawan Studies (1963) and Ryukyuan Research Resources at the University of Hawaii (1965), both by the late Dr. Shunzo Sakamaki, have served as the best intro duction. However, both books have long been out of print and are not now generally available. According to Ryukyuan Research Resources at the University of Hawaii, as of 1965, holdings totalled 4,197 titles including 3,594 titles of books and documents and 603 titles on microfilm. Annual additions for the past fifteen years, however, have increased the number considerably. The nucleus of the holdings is the Hawley Collection, supplemented by the books personally donated by Dro Shunzo Sakamaki, the Satsuma Collection, and recent acquisitions by the University of Hawaii. The total should be well over 5,000 titles. Hawley Collection The Hawley Collection represents the lifetime work of Mr. Frank Hawley, an English journalist and a well-known bibliophile who resided in Japan for more than 30 yearso When Hawley passed away in the winter of 1961 in Kyoto, Dr. Sakamaki, who happened 1 utsu no shi oyobi jo" [Song to chastize Ryukyu with preface], com posed by Priest Nanpo with the intention of justifying the expedition against Ryukyu in 1609 and of stimulating the morale of the troops. -

SOCIAL AND EDUCATIONAL STUDIES Confucius’ Philosophy of Zhengming (“Rectification of Names”): Implications for Social Harmony in Africa Mark Omorovie Ikeke1 Abstract: Social harmony is an imperative for the development of society. Without social harmony there is bound to be conflicts, violence, and social turmoil that impede the wellbeing of society. A key factor that can promote social harmony is when people live out the meaning of their names. This is what Confucius called Zhengming (“rectification of names”). For him the rectification of names implies every citizen living out the full import and meaning of their names and roles. Without rectification of names society will continue to be bedeviled by disharmony. Like many other societies the African continent is bedeviled with social disharmonies caused by poor leadership, bad governance, corruption and embezzlement of public funds, kidnapping and hostage taking, youth restiveness, illegal migration, environmental degradation, etc. It is difficult for there to be social harmony when citizens are experiencing social deprivations. The paper will use critical analytic and hermeneutic methods to examine the doctrine of rectification of names as proposed by Confucius. The paper will also apply this doctrine to the situation of social disharmony in Africa. The paper finds and concludes that there is need to use the ideas of Zhengming to mitigate social disharmonies in Africa. Without social harmony a society cannot function to full capacity and fulfils her purpose for being in existence. Social harmony is bedrock for peaceful living and creates the environment for people to live the optimal life, the purpose for which government is ordained.
