The study identified most of all the known rivers in Imo State and provided information like relief, topography and other geographical features of the major rivers which are crucial to aid water management for a sustainable water infrastructure in the communities of the watershed. The rivers and lakes are classified into five watersheds (river basins) such as Okigwe watershed, Mbaise / Mbano watershed, Orlu watershed, Oguta watershed and finally, Owerri watershed. The knowledge of the river basins in Imo State will help analyze the problems involved in water resources allocation and to provide guidance for the planning and management of water resources in the state for sustainable development.     1.1 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Soil erosion is the systematic removal of soil, including plant nutrients, from the land surface by various agents of denudation (Ofomata, 1985). Water being the dominant agent of denudation initiates erosion by rain splash impact, drag and tractive force acting on individual particles of the surface soil. Soil erosion is generally created by initial incision into the subsurface by concentrated runoff water along lines or zones of weakness such as tension and desiccation fractures. As these deepen, the sides give in or slide with the erosion of the side walls forming gullies. During the Stone Age, soil erosion was counted as a blessing because it unearths valuable treasures which lie hidden below the earth strata like gold, diamond and archaeological remains. Today, soil erosion has become an endemic global problem, In the South eastern Nigeria, mostly in Anambra State, it is an age long one that has attained a catastrophic dimension. This environmental hazard, because of the striking imprints on the landscape, has sparked off serious attention of researchers and government organisations for sometime now. Grove(1951); Carter(1958); Floyd(1965); Ofomata (1964,1965,1967,1973,and 1981); all made significant and refreshing contributions on the processes and measures to combat soil erosion. Gully Erosion is however the prominent feature in the landscape of Anambra State. The paper examined the availability of some social infrastructural facilities in rural parts of Imo State. It equally examined the extent to which those facilities have promoted rural development in the State. Data were collected mainly from primary sources. A total number of 2,340 copies of questionnaire were administered in eighteen communities and all were retrieved for the analysis. Research findings revealed unevenness in the availability of potable water supply and telephone (analogue landline) facilities. However, the availability of electricity, educational and health facilities were largely indicated by respondents in the 18 study communities to be well spread across the State. The paper noted some rural development implications as the result of the Z-test of proportion statistics led to the rejection of the null hypothesis and the acceptance of the alternative, which is that, majority of rural areas in Imo State, have significant presence of social infrastructural facilities that enhance economic activities. How truly involved are the people in the practice of Ọkpukpere-chi? And, to what extent has its practice guarantee social stability within the Bende communities? This study articulates the idea of that Ọkpukpere-chi anchors its existence on only, but one Supreme Being: Chineke (God) and many lower supernatural beings or deities (Arusi).The world view of Ọkpukpere-chi cements relations among the various Bende communities. This assertion is clearly reflected in the way and manner that, Ọkpukpere-chi practice in more ways than one, served as an umbilical cord which connected and coordinated all other facets of life. All activities in the society, whether farming, hunting, marketing, social relations, and even recreation are governed by laws and taboos, and all blend inextricably in a complicated ritual with a view to throwing light on its structure, functions and modus operandi.

Accepted 22 July, 2013 The aim of this paper is to determine relevant factors contributing to the water demand in the peri-urban communities of Awka capital city. Towards achieving this aim, questionnaire were developed and served on the households in various communities to collect relevant data on the 13 physical and socio- economic factors we earlier identified as influencing water demand in the area. Water quality was ascertained through microbiological analysis of water samples. The major analytical techniques used were multiple correlations, the result of which was subjected to Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Principal Component Regression. Result shows that the 13 variables combined to contribute 90.0% of water demand in the area. Furthermore, the low standard error of estimates of 0.029 litres shows that water demand in the communities could be predicted using the 13 variables. Policy and planning measures to improve the water supply situation of the area were suggested. Key words: Capital, communities, factors, peri-urban, water demand.

[email protected] Abstract: Geoelectrical sounding to determine the groundwater prospect in Awgu and its environs has been carried out. The study area lies within longitudes 007025’E and 0070 35’E and latitudes 06002’N and 06017’N with an area extent of 513sqkm. The area is underlain by two lithostratigraphic units, Awgu Shale and Owelli Sandstone. A total of ninety five (95) Vertical Electrical Soundings (VES) was acquired employing the Schlumberger electrode array configuration, with a maximum electrode separation ranging from 700m to 800m. Data analysis was done using a computer program RESOUND to generate the layer apparent resistivity, thickness and depth. A maximum of eight (8) layer resistivity were generated in each sounding point with a depth range of 50m to 356m. From the interpreted VES data layer 6, 7, and 8 are possible target for prospective aquifer horizons. Interpreted geoelectric layers show a sequence of shale/sand – shale sand – sand. Various contour maps were constructed using surfer 10 contouring program- Iso resistivity, Isochore (depth), Isopach (thickness), Longitudinal conductance and transverse resistance to show variation of parameters in the study area.
