You don’t need a lot of time to enjoy boating. Just get to the dock, the boat will be waiting for you, fueled up and ready to go. We clean, maintain, store, and do all the prep work for your enjoyment. Instead, you spend your time having fun on the water.

It’s one thing to love boating. It’s something quite different to love everything about owning a boat. Everyone who has owned a boat knows the numerous responsibilities that go along with it: cleaning, fixing, maintaining, towing or docking, storing, winterizing and, of course, there is insurance to buy, licenses to obtain and various other financial obligations. So what is a passionate boater to do? One increasingly popular solution: Own the joy of boating, don’t own the boat!

Boat clubs have a particularly strong attraction for seniors who love boating, but after so many years on the water have lost their passion for scrubbing decks, waxing hulls, repairing props or replacing a broken radio. Others that are new to boating are typically provided training to learn boating skills to increase their confidence and enjoyment while spending the day on the water.

“Becoming a member of the boat club as opposed to owning a boat really was the answer to a dilemma while shopping for a new boat,” said Jeremy McMillan, who is a Houston fireman and local Realtor. “Our fami- ly couldn’t agree on one type of boat to purchase but with being a part of the club I can easily satisfy everyone’s want by choosing a different boat each time we go out.”

It’s Summer Vacation Time! - TOWING THE KIDS ALONG

uly and August are the most popular month for boating with children. And as anyone who has ever Jfamily vacations, when children are out of school been confined in an automobile with a child for an and available to join the family on extended trips. As extended amount of time knows, the adventure starts any parent will tell you, there’s a learning curve involved the moment the tow vehicle is loaded-up, hitched to when adjusting to traveling with children, and that’s the trailer and headed down the driveway. Planning especially true when towing or traveling by boat. for an enjoyable boating trip with children should begin even before that. With an eager ten-year-old of my own, and a dozen nieces and nephews to join me on boating vacations, Here are six tips for making this summer’s boating I have learned a thing or two about traveling and vacation with the children a success:

40 Southwest Boating Magazine 1. Choose an appropriate destination. Consider a destination offering something age-appropriate for each child you are traveling with, and allow the child to have some input during the destination selection process. And don’t even THINK about overnighting at a hotel that doesn’t have a swimming pool…

2. Establish the Rules of the Road. Before you even board the tow vehicle, let alone the boat, make sure each child has a clear understanding of what is appropriate It’s easier to get the kids to wear their behavior on the road, in the hotel room and on board PFDs if you offer sizes and styles aboard - the boat. that are designed for youths. Better yet, allow them to select -- if not purchase with their own money -- their own PFD pri 3. Let them pack their own travel bag. Make sure it is small or to the vacation… enough that they can carry it by him- or herself and that the bag includes toys, games, books or other items the youngster can use to entertain themself during the drive or at the hotel room.

4. Pack sun protection, a first aid kit and comfortable PFDs. Protection from the sun is paramount, especially around the water where the sun’s rays are reflected and where sunscreen can be washed off by swimming or contact with the water. A first aid kit needs to be handy when you need it, and make Kids will let you know when the boating sure it’s well-stocked with various size band aides and fun factor has been exhausted and it’s time to get off the water. Best to end children’s pain reliever. Vacation to the trip.

5. Plan plenty of stops along the way. “Daddy, my legs need to run!” is the way my son Ethan let’s me know it’s time to pull over at the next rest stop, boat dock or beach. Having a football, ball gloves and baseball or a Frisbee handy along the drive promote some physical activity at each “rest” stop. When stopping at a road-side rest stop, the truck parking area usually offers more open space for walking and playing catch, and if you have a boat in tow is usually where they want your rig to be parked anyway.

6. End each trip on a positive note, doing something the child Chose kid-friendly boating destinations really enjoys. BOATING UPGRADES ON A BUDGET

o while the news says the current state of the Seconomy is improving, you’re still in no position to buy a new rig? Many are in the same boat. Even if you’re doing ok, you might tend to be more cautious about your lifestyle, your spending habits, and yes, even your favorite passions…boating and fishing.

While the times call for caution to be sure, the current state of the economy can’t ruin everyone’s fun. As this is written, summer is here, gas prices are still pretty low compared to this time last year, and it would be a shame to let one go by without enjoying it; life’s too short to let the beauty and warmth of the fishing and boating season to go by without getting out on the water.
