Brought to you in Partnership with:

South Tyneside 2016 has been an exciting year This has been an exciting year for the Borough with much to celebrate despite the challenging economic climate.

Last month saw the opening of our new cultural attraction The Word, National Centre for the Written Word, which is the cornerstone of our ambitious 365 masterplan. Housed in a landmark building, this will host a rolling programme of high profile exhibitions, events and writers in residence to celebrate the written word in all its forms to educate, inspire and entertain.

We can also look forward to a bumper festive programme with our Christmas Wonderland events including light switch-ons and the much loved Camel Parade.

Next year is set to be even more challenging with further funding reductions from central government but we will continue to do our utmost to protect local services. In these difficult financial times, it is important that you have your say on the decisions that will affect you and your family. Please take a minute to complete the questionnaire in this Tens of thousands enjoy newsletter to let us know what matters most to you.

I would also like to encourage you to take a look at proposals from the Boundary Commission for England into a review of parliamentary constituencies. An article in this even ts this summer newsletter will tell you more about how and where you can find out more about these proposals and have your say.

I hope you enjoy reading this edition of the newsletter and would like to thank all our partners and organisations who contribute to it. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Councillor Iain Malcolm Leader of the Council

The Council is committed to supporting service men and women and their families adapting back to civilian life. Silver Service South Tyneside Council has been awarded a Silver Employer Recognition (ERS) Award by the Ministry of Defence for the support it offers its Armed Forces community across the Borough. The Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) encourages employers to support military personnel and inspire other organisations to do the same. The Council pledged its commitment in December 2011 when it signed the official Armed Services Community Covenant – a voluntary statement of mutual support between the civilian and local armed forces communities. Following this the Council has further extended its commitment with the creation of the Armed Forces Forum, offering support to serving and ex-service personnel as well as their families. We have improved our homes by installing insulation in roofs and walls, installing central heating systems and fitting double glazing. This helps keep properties warm but it also means that any moisture present in the air in the property remains if there is insufficient ventilation. Some homes have extractor fans and/or positive pressure units which help to force air containing moisture outside. Don’t turn off positive pressure units, these are designed to run constantly and only cost around a penny a day to operate. You can also leave windows on their trickle vent setting to allow airflow.

Look out for damp and condensation in your home Damp Tips to reduce Damp occurs when a fault in a building’s structure lets in water from condensation outside. There are two types of damp: • Open windows immediately after a bath • Penetrating Damp occurs if water is coming in through the roof or walls or shower to remove steam such as under a loose roof tile, through cracks or through a faulty gutter • Make sure internal doors are closed so steam or downpipe. doesn’t spread • Rising Damp occurs if there is a problem with the damp proof course. • Dry washing outside or keep the window Look out for a ‘tide mark’ on the walls this shows how high it has risen. open in the room where items are drying, the heating on and the door closed Condensation and mould • Make sure your tumble dryer is vented Condensation can cause mould, damage to clothes, furnishings and directly to the outside or is a condensing dryer decoration, leaving a musty smell.
