PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 and 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak a Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate
PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

An unknown, starving band named Thin Lizzy (which consisted of Bell, Downey & Lynott) were offered a lump sum of money to record some Deep Purple songs. (The album contains also a few non-DP tracks.) They did - with the help from two Irish guys. The album came out in early 1973. It wasn't a success. In February, Thin Lizzy had a top ten hit with a single of their own. Read more about it here. ABSOLUTE EDITORIAL Absolute Editorial #3 Things are coming together nicely for us here at Absolute Underground. This is starting go be fun! We’re getting into a few free shows and people are starting to send in CD’s for us to review. We’ve got a lot of new people pitching in to make this rag better than ever. Emily Kendy joins us from Vancouver and brings with her a very impressive resume (The Nerve, Discorder, Terminal City, Exclaim...). We’ll be featuring a different Vancouver based band each issue starting with scum punks the Excessives. With the new Arena and Rod Stewart having played Victoria, you can just feel that this is going to be a great year for live music around town. I’m always impressed with the turnout and energy of the younger crowds at the all-ages shows. Even if you’re old you should go check one out sometime. You might find it invigorating to jump in a circle pit of mohawked fury. It was great hanging out with the crew at Spitfire Tattoo special thanks to Rick and Amanda. Electric Frankenstein was an amazing show and just proves that Victoria gets wicked shows all the time. A big middle finger to the asshole bouncers @ Diego’s who wouldn’t let me in even though I was on the guest list and then proceeded to tell the headlining act CHOKE to “pack their shit, they weren’t going to play.” This was after two huge idiots working the door beat up CHOKE’s drummer who weighs about a buck ten soaking wet. -

It has endured in the face of the changing times, without itself changing much, isolated off in its own world. Glorfindel had the opinion that Bombadil would be the last to fall, after all else was lost, last as he was first. In Tolkien’s story, that opinion was never tested. Good triumphed over evil, and everyone lived happily ever after. Not true on the Internet. Since 1993, the forces of evil have created a desolation and oppression that Sauron even with the help of his ruling ring could not imagine perpetrating. From the days of the Internet as an academic research network until today’s Internet I have witnessed ruination unbelieveable. The decay, corruption, and runiation of the Internet boggles my mind. Like Tom Bombadil in his carefully demarcated borders, The Genesis Discography has been an island in the storm, surrounded on all sides but never giving in. -

DOKKEN THETHE BESTBEST OFOF ENEMIESENEMIES the Idea That People Playing in Bands Together Hate Each Other’S Guts Is As Old As the Hills
FEATURE DOKKEN THETHE BESTBEST OFOF ENEMIESENEMIES The idea that people playing in bands together hate each other’s guts is as old as the hills. The difference withDokken guitarist George Lynch and the band’s singer Don Dokken was that they didn’t care who knew it. Paul Elliott talks to both musos about a lifelong mistrust and how their volatile relationship still managed to yield 20 million album sales! FOR ONE OF THE great rock bands of the ’80s there was classic album ‘Blackout’. A year later, with Dokken’s always a problem. No matter how high they flew, selling future not guaranteed, George auditioned for Ozzy millions of albums and playing on the world’s biggest Osbourne, but lost out to Jake E. Lee. It was another stages, there was undeniably something rotten at the heartbreak for the guitarist whose earlier band, The core of Dokken, a bitter feud between the singer who Boyz, had been courted by Gene Simmons before Van gave the band its name, and the guitar hero who never Halen stole their thunder. liked the vocalist in the first place and grew to dislike him A change of fortune came when Cliff Burnstein, even more as fame, money, ego and drugs took hold. co-manager of Def Leppard, signed Dokken and got Don Dokken and George Lynch made some great them a deal with major label Elektra.
