Woehlcke Course Description: Literature and Composition (Academic), a diverse, thematically structured course, expands upon the writing process and the development of literary analysis skills. Students write a series of analytical and reader response essays and read from a variety of literary genres. Instruction focuses on analyzing literary elements, analyzing author’s purpose, and writing with precision and focus. Additionally, students learn and practice research skills and processes. Grammar usage within the context of students’ reading and writing is an integral component. Students also continue their study of vocabulary through close analysis of literary passages. Though many years of English education can have a bearing on their results, students take the Literature Keystone Exam in grade 10 in addition to their final exams. Course Rationale: The works in the tenth-grade curriculum compel all of us to examine who we are as storytellers. As students progress through the course, they engage in conversations about how we communicate our identities through the observations, insights, and stories we tell. To this end, students closely examine the obvious ways in which we communicate tone through language, movement, and the nature of our conflicts. These conversations yield valuable dialogue and allow multiple openings to evaluate how an author forms a literary identity. EFFECT OF STARTING DISTANCE ON VERTICAL GROUND REACTION FORCES IN THE DOG by DAVID BURNETT DULANEY (Under Direction the of Hugh Dookwah) ABSTRACT Kinetic gait analysis is used extensively in both human and veterinary medicine, both to detect pathological gait abnormalities and to quantify the efficacy of surgical and pharmacological protocols. This study evaluates the effect of three different staring distances from the kinetic data collection device (2m, 4m, and 6m) on the peak vertical and associated impulse ground reaction forces generated by the test subjects at a trot. Five dogs weighing between 20 and 30kg were trotted over two force plates at between 1.6 and 2.1 m/s until 5 right first contacts and 5 left first contacts were collected. Data collection was repeated approximately a week apart for a total of 5 collections. Vertical impulse values were found to be significantly different (p<0.05) between 2m and 6m, but neither were different from 4m. Peak vertical force was not found to be significantly effected by distance. Abstract In this thesis we create a method to allow dogs and humans to interact over the Internet. In particular, we generalize an established dog training technique known as "clicker-training" such that the remote and co-located interactions are reported by dog owners to be similar. In the process of creating this computer-mediated interaction, we learn what it means to design an interface for a creature with very different sensory modalities than humans. Dogs are not "furry humans" but entirely different creatures with very different perceptual, motor, and cognitive systems than humans. This work is significant because by systematically applying HCI design principles to non-humans, we include animals in the HCI community. -
