Federal Hillsider The Monthly Newsletter of the Federal Hill Neighborhood Association October 2016

The President’s Letter Dear Friends and Neighbors,

We have been considering historic designation (CHAP) for Federal Hill for several years now. In the last 18 months, there has been significant effort by the FHNA board and other interested homeowners to move the process forward. We’ve invited the executive director of the Commission to present at both regularly scheduled and ad hoc meetings. We’ve discussed the pros and cons as well as the process in general. The City has endeavored to increase homeowner awareness of what it means to be a CHAP district through mail campaigns and articles in our newsletter. They’ve also set up a survey site to allow homeowners to support or reject designation online. Federal Hill is a dog loving neighborhood but we ask that Now it is time for the next step, which is to close the survey and you respect others by obeying "No Dogs Allowed" signs schedule a public hearing. Jim Keat’s Wish: A Party For Neighbors And Friends by Jan Warrington More than 100 long-time friends including Federal Hill neighbors, Baltimore Sun colleagues, and fellow journalists gathered on a warm, early fall night to remember Jim Keat, who died in July at age 86. The event was held at the outdoor pavilion of the Baltimore Museum of Industry and was hosted by Jim’s wife, Chris Thompson, and his step-daughter Christine Barbour. The event included music, drinks and dinner, and remembrances from several speakers. His wife, Chris, said that Jim had always wanted a party instead of a funeral. Jim was a highly respected reporter and editor at The Sun for many years until his retirement in 1995 and a devoted resident of Federal Hill for several decades. After his retirement he became active in the Federal Hill Neighborhood Association and served as FHNA president. Several speakers shared their remembrances of Jim, including his step-daughter; former Federal Hill Business Association president Sonny Morstein; and Joe Sterne, former editorial page editor of The Sun. One speaker shared the story of Jim’s abduction in the early ‘90s when he was forced to withdraw money from ATMs before eventually being freed in East Baltimore. After that ordeal Jim was often asked if he wanted to leave Baltimore; he would adamantly reply that he loved living in Federal Hill and had no intention of leaving. “He was just a great guy, a great guy,” said neighbor and friend Coard Simpler, also a long-time Federal Hill resident. A poster at the event announced that the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association Foundation has created a Jim Keat Internship Fund, with a stipend going to a deserving intern. If you are interested in contributing, donations may be sent to the MDDC Press Association, 60 West Street, Suite 107, Annapolis, Md., 21401, or go to mddcpress. Adoptable AARFies – Sammy and Kitty

Hello there! My name is Sammy, and I am a happy, senior gentleman, and a handsome beagle to boot! Due to my age and some muscle tone issues in my back and hind leg muscles, I’m not very active. But that just means I’m not looking to go on a 5 mile jog -- however I love my people and will happily follow you wherever you go! Short walks in the fresh air are like heaven on earth for me. I love to use my beagle nose! Other great things about me include: I just love to be petted, I have never turned down a snack, and did I mention that I really love people?! In fact, if you’re hanging out in one room I will lay quietly and contentedly close by, enjoying the pleasure of your company and a cozy bed. Because I am a gentleman, I don’t chew or mess up the house. I will tell you when I need to go out but I can’t hold my pee for more than 5 or 6 hours during the day. I do sleep soundly all night and wake with big a doggie smile while I stretch and wait for you to say hi to me! I love to give kisses to everyone, and I even enjoy the company of older, respectful children. Do you have the perfect house for me to retire to? Come meet me and let’s find out! If you’d like to take me home, please fill out an adoption application at this site - http://www.animalalliesrescue.org and choose me - Sammy 2.0! My adoption fee is $150 and includes all of my routine vetting, rabies and distemper/parvo vaccinations, deworming, spay/neuter surgery, heartworm testing, monthly heartworm prevention, microchip, boarding and transportation costs if applicable, along with an offer for 30 days of free 24PetWatch pet insurance!

Hi! My name is Kitty. Not very original. I know. But I really am a good kitty and I’m looking for a new home. I’m just four years old and as you can see by my picture I’m a pretty girl. I’m a medium size girl at 11 pounds. In my new foster home I’m meeting other cats for the first time and I’m working at getting along with them, but youknow what I love? Dogs! I love doggies! So if you have a doggy that likes kitties that would be be great! Being in a new foster home is a little scary. But I’m learning that my foster mommy is really nice and I’m enjoying cuddles and being picked up. I was living with a family but they were going to have a baby and they decided that I might be rough with the baby. So maybe little tiny kids wouldn’t be best, but older kids who have been around animals might be fine. Like all good kitties, I have perfect litter box manners, and I really am a good girl. My foster home is really nice but I hope I can find a forever home soon. My adoption fee is $150.00 and includes all of my routine vetting, rabies and distemper/parvo vaccinations, FelV/FIV testing, deworming, spay/neuter surgery, heartworm testing, monthly heartworm prevention, microchip, boarding and transportation costs if applicable, along with an offer for 30 days of free 24PetWatch pet insurance! Color Palate: Food Meets Art at The Rowhouse Grille By Debbie Ally-Dickerson Color Palate, a series of three events at Federal Hill’s The Rowhouse Grille, promises to deliver a “unique sensory experience” through the connection of food and fine art. Chef Mosley’s carefully curated nine-course meal highlights and complements nine of Ms. Walker’s paintings. One might not immediately see a connection between food and Ms. Walker’s artwork, full of intricately layered, super-saturated colors. Chef Mosley explains the collaboration was a real meeting of the minds: “the idea for Color Palate began when Kelly asked me to help her name a few paintings. Almost every painting made me think of food. She said ‘I can’t name this octopus salad! When you make a painting, you can name it octopus salad.’ Fearing I would make a terrible painter, I asked Kelly to create an octopus salad-inspired painting instead. And so it began.” The upstairs dining room at The Rowhouse Grille will be reserved for the three 9-course tasting events on October 6th, November 3rd, and COLOR PALATE is a collaboration between fine artist Kelly L Walker and executive chef Tess V December 15th. All of Ms. Walker’s artwork will be available for purchase;Mosley. It’s an excuse to come At length, the Wizard Awry said: “Well?” outside, mingle with each other, and sip some wine or drink a beer “Trick or treat!” the kid said, and they both broke into laughter. somewhat illicitly. The street returned to normal, or at least as normal as it can be on a There is common cause. We pool our resources so that, as the kids Halloween night. come by, they don’t have to knock on each and every door. There is just one spot where the adults ladle out the Snickers and Twix and Three Musketeers. There is anticipation of the event. Days before, multiple texts, phone calls, and chats across fences are exchanged setting the site at which to congregate and relating how many bags of candy would be purchased from local stores. Sometimes there is an effort to not only have the adults dress up for the occasion but actually coordinate costumes. Street lore still remembers the time when neighbor ladies dressed as the Blue Nun, the Flying Nun, the Pregnant Nun, and the Abbess (Lingering in the background was Father Elvis.) To be honest, that kind of effort is the exception rather than the rule. Still, as the sun sets and as assorted witches, ghosts, robots, Spidermen, Wonder Women, Vikings, Harry Potters, and others start wandering up and down the sidewalks, the neighbors come out with bowls and bowls of treats. (And bottles and glasses, for themselves.) At the most recent Halloween, though, there was a twist—one that is equally likely to go down in street lore. Did I mention the Wizard Awry? The wizard has lived here for a number of years but never participated in our Halloween street gathering. His house always was dark. Not only that, the closer you got to it, the more ill-at-ease you felt, as if something emanated from within warning you not to come near. This year was different. Not only did the Wizard Awry come join us, he brought huge cauldrons filled to the rims. To be honest, we looked in those cauldrons warily, but all they contained were more Butterfingers, Baby Ruths, and Reese’s Pieces. “Costco,” is all the wizard said to our inquiring stares.
