Our purpose is to supplement our Sunday morning curriculum and give you an opportunity to encourage your children to develop a daily devotional life. We hope you and your family will be blessed as you study God’s Word together. This week in Children’s Church we learned about The Good Shepherd. The theme was “Jesus is the Good Shepherd.” The Bible uses the picture of a shepherd and sheep to help us to understand about our relationship with Him. Jesus is called the good shepherd in the Bible. He loves us, protects us and helps us. He even lays down His life for us. What a blessing! We hope that our children will gain a better understanding of how much Jesus loves us in this picture of a shepherd with his sheep. Thankfully we have a shepherd that is a “good” shepherd and wants our very best. We can rest in the fact that Jesus will watch over us and take care of us. The section of scripture that we studied was John 10:1-21. The following five devotions are based on either the scripture and/or the theme for Sunday’s lesson. As a starting point it would be good for you to review these verses with your children. -

Environmental Values in Christian Art . Albany, NY: State University of New York Press, 2008. ix, 282 pp. ISBN 9780791472651. US$30, cloth. Environmental Art in Christian Values claims that Christian art is an underutilized primary source for research and sets out to “correct this deficiency and to explore the evolution of environmental values through Christian history by investigating trends in religious material culture” (p. 2). The book examines many examples of Christian art and architecture from the late 2 nd century in Rome to the 17 th century in the Netherlands. Bratton, Professor of Environmental Studies at Baylor University, provides descriptions of art found in catacombs, on sarcophagi, stained glass, bas-reliefs, mosaics, and other works of art. Of the many pieces of art described, fifteen are accompanied by a black-and-white photo. Christian art is best understood “as an evolving dialog among Christians and between Christianity and the greater culture” (p. 229). Early Christian art was environmentally peaceful and generous toward nature, and did encourage a more respectful attitude toward animals, which were generally portrayed as humble servants. Jesus is strongly associated with nature and animals, and in early paintings, takes on the personae of the Good Shepard. -

The “bad cop” aims to be stern and harsh, even threatening, while the “good cop” tries to develop a rapport with the suspect, demonstrating a compassionate and level-headed demeanor in contrast to the “bad cop.” Which role would you prefer to play: “good cop” or “bad cop”? Easter 4B 2018 The Good Shepherd Although I have preached about the good shepherd many times, I have seen a shepherd only once in my life. It was more than fifty years ago, in France. The shepherd I met was a solitary figure who spent the summer on the mountainside watching and protecting his sheep. Although I only spoke with him briefly, I think of him every year on this good shepherd Sunday because he was such vivid image of Jesus the good shepherd. Jesus is the good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep. No one takes his life from him. He surrenders it freely, and he takes it up again in the resurrection from the dead. Jesus is the good shepherd because he gives his life for his sheep. To be sure, there are other people who have made the supreme sacrifice of surrendering their life for others. But when Jesus surrendered his life, he gave his life as the Son of God for the life of the world God. When Jesus surrendered his life, he freed and cleansed us from the power of Sin. His death brings us into God’s life. He death for us changes the world and makes this world a new creation. This is why St. Peter in today’s first reading: “There is no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven … by which we are saved.” Jesus is the good shepherd because he knows us by name. There is no one here today whom the Risen the Lord does not know by name. -

Pfeiffer Das im Titel zitierte Lob von 1897 auf die Glasmalerei-Werkstatt Ely klingt heute recht über- schwenglich.1 Angesichts ihres über 50-jährigen Bestehens und von heute noch an knapp 50 Standorten vorwiegend in Deutschland, aber auch in Frankreich und Übersee bezeugten Verglasungen ist es aber umso verwunderlicher, über 100 Jahre später nurmehr verstreute Angaben über die damals geschätzte und viel beschäftigte Werkstatt zu finden. Für mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert, von 1855 bis 1909, prägten der aus Kassel stammende Vater Hein- rich Ely und seine Söhne Henri Julien und Louis Adolphe sowie die Schwiegertochter Lina mit ihrer Werkstatt die im 19. Jahrhundert aufblühende Tradition künstlerischer Verglasun- gen, zunächst vom französischen Nantes aus mit bis zu 20, später in Wehlheiden mit rund zehn Mitarbeitern. Im preußischen Regierungsbezirk Kassel arbeiteten die Ely neben heute ebenfalls weitgehend unbekannten Glasmalern wie Heinrich Leinweber in Fulda, Friedrich Berit und C. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Summary of Presentations “Help Me Fall in Love with God” The philosophy of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program is that even very young children have a religious life. God is present to them in their deepest being and they are capable of developing both a conscious and intimate relationship with God. We provide materials based on age-appropriate Scripture passages and liturgical signs that nurture their relationship with God. The program balances exposure to our liturgy and the richness of our communal sacramental life with reading the Bible. Our program begins with presenting the New Testament to the children because it is the foundation of our faith. The youngest learn about Jesus and the beauty and wonder of the Kingdom of God through carefully chosen Bible verses that foster a deep love for Jesus. As they grow older they are encouraged to think about their personal responsibility to maintain this relationship with God and their social responsibility in the world. The oldest group studies the Old Testament in great detail and continues to deepen their understanding of the liturgy. They plan worship services and begin community service. Each presentation has specific materials designed to draw the child into the Biblical and Liturgical themes. These materials are always available to the children during their work time so they have additional opportunity to absorb the lessons. The following is a summary to the presentations offered for Level I. Classes are structured to offer a time of prayer and song, a time for the “presentation” and a time for individual work by the child. -

Christian Art and Culture Some years ago at a museum located near the University of St. Thomas in Houston, there was an art exhibit which created somewhat of a stir. It consisted of several cars, flatten and set up on end. The cars were painted various colors and as it turns out the exhibit was rather costly: each smashed car cost the art museum $100,000. When I first heard this, I thought of the missed opportunity since I could have gone to a salvage yard, put some cars through a compactor and then painted the cars, not much differently than they were. I sat for a few minutes contemplating the revenue that could have been mine, particularly in light of the name of the exhibit, which was “the Emperor’s New Clothing.” A better title could not have been chosen. It reminds one of the common adage, “a fool and his money are soon parted.” All of this demonstrates the necessity of possessing knowledge of what art truly is. In order to understand the relationship of Christian art to culture, which is the topic of this address, one must have a grasp of four things. The first is the nature of art; the second, connected to the first, is: what is beauty? Third, what is truly “Christian” and lastly, what is culture? It appears, at least to me, that our contemporaries are so confused about all four of these that we should briefly discuss each. The first is art. St. Thomas Aquinas says that “art is nothing other than right reason of some produced works.”1 In other words, art is the application of right reason toward producing some kind of work. -

Pictured as the Incarnation of Logos, the Son of God, the Child born unto Mary, the fi gure of Christ embodied the most important dogma of Christianity.1 Depicted in art, Christ represents the hypostasis of the Word made man – the Logos in human form.2 Christ the Logos was made man (κατά τόν ανθρώπινον χαρακτήρα). God incarnate, man born of Mary, as dictated by canon 82 of the Synod In Trullo in Constan- tinople (AD 692), was to be depicted only in human form, replacing symbols (the lamb).3 From the moment of incarnation, the image of Christ became easily perceptible to the human eye, and hence readily defi ned in shape and colour.4 Artists painting representations of Christ drew inspiration from the many descriptions recorded in the apocrypha: ... and with him another, whose countenance resembled that of man. His countenance was full of grace, like that of one of the holy angels (1 Enoch 46:1). For humankind Christ was the most essential link between the seen and the unseen, between heaven and Earth;5 the link between God and the men sent by God (John 1:6; 3:17; 5:22-24), through whom God endows the world with all that is good. He is the mediator to whom the faithful, often through the intercession of the Virgin, make supplication and prayer – if you ask the Father anything in my name, he will give it to you (John 16:23; 14:11-14; 15:16).
