OUR OPINION Relay effort key to clearing hurdles on CHS track effort here’s an effort underway to gain community sup- port for the resurfacing of the six-lane track surface Toval at Columbia High School. The effort is just out of the starting blocks, but the project will mean track boosters will be seeking financial donations from commu- nity partners to make this happen. The old asphalt track needs a rubberized resurfacing to be relevant in today’s competitive event lineup. Reports also indicate that somehow, a school with the competitive pedigree of Columbia High, does not have the proper track equipment to host a meet if the new surface were in place. The need for equipment and the resurfacing will come with a price tag of approximately $250,000, a steep fund- raising goal for any recreational venture. A couple of local businesses have stepped up, but the total commitment to begin the effort is around $9,000. There’s a lot of work to be done, but it can be raised. The only way the track project becomes viable is if it is utilized in an inconclusive fashion and the entire com- munity is welcomed into this project. Tiger Stadium, the track and the overall facility needs to remain open and accessible to the public. We’re not saying the community should be allowed to try their hand at pole vaulting into an expensive puffy cushion. But it is reasonable to allow com- munity members to walk or run laps on a durable rubber track surface during early mornings, after school or on weekends, as the public does now on the asphalt.
