A STUDY OF HIS USE AND DEVELOPMENT OF SOLITARY FIGURES A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Department of English Kansas State Teachers College In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts by Douglas E. Mailen August 1972 PREFACE William Wordsworth's predilection for and life-long use of the solitary figure in his poetry was initially re vealed to this author while a member of a graduate class concerned with the Romantic Movement in English Literature. The class session terminated before I had achieved a con certed understanding of Wordsworth's solitary figure. However, continued reading in Wordsworth's canon directed my scattered thoughts. To objectify my own thinking on this subject, I went to secondary material. Critical recognition of the poet's interest in the solitary figure was plentiful, but his development and use of the solitary figure had not been traced. I thought that I recognized a pattern of development and use in his poetic creations, and I resolved ~ to pursue Wordsworth's progressive treatment of the solitary figure with the hope of illuminating these facets of the poet's genius which had not been treated summarily. The primary source for this study was Wordsworth's poetical canon. Special emphasis has been placed on The Prelude, his Gothic drama, The Borderers, and The Excursion. The Poetical Works of William Wordsworth, edited by Ernest de Selincourt, was vital to this stUdy, as were the notes ii included in each volume of his edition. In addition, his categorizing of Wordsworth's Works was a great aid in es tablishing the poet's development and use of the solitary figure. -

Based on an examination of the correspondence of whig and radical polit- icians, and of the files of the morning Chronicle, it illustrates the impact which Perry made on the world of politics and journalism. The main questions discussed are how Perry responded, as a Foxite journalist, to the chief political issues of the day; the extent to which the whigs attempted to influence his editorial policy and the degree to which he reconciled his independence with obedience to their wishes4 the difficulties he encountered as the spokesman of an often divided party; his considerable involvement, which was remarkable for a journalist, in party activity and in the social life of whig politicians; and his success as a newspaper proprietor concerned not only with political propaganda, but with conducting a paper which was distinguished for the quality of its miscellaneous features and for its profitability as a business enterprise. -
Utilitarianism in the Age of Enlightenment
UTILITARIANISM IN THE AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT This is the first book-length study of one of the most influential traditions in eighteenth-century Anglophone moral and political thought, ‘theological utilitarianism’. Niall O’Flaherty charts its devel- opment from its formulation by Anglican disciples of Locke in the 1730s to its culmination in William Paley’s work. Few works of moral and political thought had such a profound impact on political dis- course as Paley’s Principles of Moral and Political Philosophy (1785). His arguments were at the forefront of debates about the constitution, the judicial system, slavery and poverty. By placing Paley’s moral thought in the context of theological debate, this book establishes his genuine commitment to a worldly theology and to a programme of human advancement. It thus raises serious doubts about histories which treat the Enlightenment as an entirely secular enterprise, as well as those which see English thought as being markedly out of step with wider European intellectual developments. niall o’flaherty is a Lecturer in the History of European Political Thought at King’s College London. His research focuses on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century moral, political and religious thought in Britain. Poems is . to make those events which in real or imagined History move in a strait [sic] Line, assume to our Understandings a circular motion” (CL 4: 545). Coleridge’s so-called “Conversation” poems seem to conform most conspicuously to this aesthetic theory, structured as they are to return to their starting points at their conclusions. The assumption, however, that this comforting circular structure is commensurate with the sense of these poems can be questioned, for the conclusions of the “Conversation” poems are rarely, if ever, reassuring. The formal circularity of these poems is frequently achieved more by persuasive rhetoric than by any cohesion of elements. The circular structure encourages the reader’s expectations of unity and synthesis, but ultimately these expectations are disappointed, and instead the reader is surprised by an ending more troubling than the rhetoric of return and reassurance would suggest. Taking three “Conversation” poems as case studies (“The Eolian Harp,” “This Lime-Tree Bower My Prison,” and “Frost at Midnight”), this thesis attempts to explicate those tensions which exist in the “Conversation” poems between form and effect, between structure and sense.
