NOTE: John Gould was born in England in 1804; he spent his youth working alongside his father at the Royal Gardens in Windsor, where he developed skills as a taxidermist. By 1827 he had an appointment at the Zoological Society. The historic Birds of Australia was a thirty-year production of which two whole years were spent touring Australia. Between 1838-1840 Gould and his wife Elizabeth, who was responsible for producing some 600 drawings for Birds of Australia, lived and travelled throughout Australia. Together they created the greatest work on Australian avifauna and perhaps Gould’s major ornithological achievement. He was considered the foremost authority on the subject and on numerous occasions during his career made public his concerns about the protection and preservation of many species, which, even in his day were showing signs of elimination due to excessive shooting. Birds of Australia remains today the most comprehensive work on the subject, with few new species being added, and sadly, two have become extinct and at least twenty others are on the verge of extinction. $9,000 175 GRAHAM-PAIGE INTERNATIONAL MOTOR CORPORATION, DETROIT, MICHIGAN, U.S.A. : Three (3) catalogues depicting the various automobiles offered for sale (circa 1929-1934). An excellent complete copy of the First 8vo Edition. Printed in double-column. NOTE: Johnson’s Dictionary is the benchmark against which all lexicographic works are still judged. Johnson defi ned a lexicographer as ‘a writer of dictionaries; a harmless drudge that busies himself in tracing the original, and detailing the signifi cation of words’. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) became the most renowned of English lexicographers. A great poet, essay writer, biographer, lexicographer and critic of English literature, he was often melancholy and fi nancially stretched, his intellectual work bringing little fi nancial reward. American lexicographer, Noah Webster, acknowledges that ‘Johnson’s writings had, in philology, the effect which Newton’s discoveries had in mathematics’. Johnson introduced lexicographic principles that were new to mid-eighteenth-century England though widely accepted in Europe. He codifi ed the spelling of English words, describing their meaning lucidly and illustrating these meanings with examples from a range of respected authors. $3,000 232 JONES, D.L.
