Jonny King — Biography
Jonny King Biography Jonny King has been described by Downbeat as "one of the strongest piano voices" of his generation and a "bandleader who kicks ass." JazzTimes likewise wrote that he “represents the best of what jazz has to offer” as both a performer and composer. A native New Yorker, he grew up in the City's jazz clubs, participating first as a fan and then as a performer. Before he was a teenager, King had already performed onstage with Dizzy Gillespie and appeared on television at the piano alongside his early idol, Earl “Fatha” Hines. Before he was 20, he was already sitting in with Art Blakey and playing his first gigs in New York's many restaurants and clubs. King is primarily self-taught, having neither received any formal music education nor attended any jazz schools. He gratefully credits pianists Mulgrew Miller and Tony Aless as important influences, mentors and personal teachers. Beyond their private instruction, King learned music in the most old-school of ways -- by obsessively listening to records, attending jam sessions, and soaking up as much live and recorded music possible, from the most traditional to the most avant-garde. He continues to approach music the same way, both as a performer and composer. Beginning in the 1990s, King became a steady presence on the City's club scene, featuring his own bands at The Jazz Standard, Smalls, and legendary clubs like Sweet Basil's and Bradley's, his home-away-from-home, where he performed regularly both as leader and sideman. He toured as a member of Joshua Redman's Quartet and the Blue Note Records cooperative band OTB, and worked as the pianist in groups led by saxophonists Steve Wilson, Eddie Harris, Vincent Herring and many others. -

Not only is the 26th the late trumpeter’s birthday but many of his most enduring works were New York@Night recorded during this month, including the Charlie Parker All-Stars (1948); the 4 Miles Davis-Tadd Dameron Quintet’s run in Paris (1949), most of the Workin’, Steamin’ and Relaxin’ triumvirate by the quintet with John Coltrane (1956), Miles Interview: Vince Giordano Ahead and At Carnegie Hall, both with the Gil Evans Orchestra (1957 and 1961 6 by Michael Hittman respectively); and the bulk of Miles in the Sky (1968). Now in May 2008, another chapter to the Miles Legacy will be written with an ambitious concert at Town Artist Feature: George Garzone Hall May 9th, “Miles From India”. A companion concert to a just-released album 7 by Matthew Miller of the same name, the concert brings together musicians who played with the legend throughout his career as well as a number of classical Indian musicians for Label Spotlight: Les Disques Victo what is billed as a “cross-cultural summit meeting”. Our Encore this month, 8 by Kurt Gottschalk guitarist Pete Cosey, is participating in what is sure to be a monumental event. But, as is typical for New York, the happenings don’t stop happening there. This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds. -

Thursday, March 27, 2003 – Bezanson Recital Hall Charles Tolliver and Music, Inc. Charles Tolliver - trumpet Stanley Cowell – piano Cecil McBee – bass Carl Allen - drums Charles Tolliver is “a superb technician with an utterly distinctive voice,” wrote Richard Cook, as well as a bandleader, composer, arranger, record company executive, and educator of the highest order. Since launching his professional career in the 1960s, Charles Tolliver has quietly become one of the premier trumpeters and musical organizers in jazz. “A trumpeter of such flow, tone, control, lyricism and creativity is, by definition, a major musician,” said veteran producer Michael Cuscuna. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1942 and raised in New York, Mr. Tolliver taught himself to play jazz from listening to the radio, and began playing trumpet and drums in his school band. he left New York to study pharmacy at Howard University (1960-63) before moving back to New York to immerse himself in the jazz scene. In 1964, Charles Tolliver began playing with saxophonist Jackie McLean, with whom he made his first recording, “It’s Time” (Blue Note). He spent 1965 with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers before traveling to the west coast to work with Willie Bobo and Gerald Wilson. In 1967, Mr. Tolliver joined Max Roach’s quintet, during which time he also recorded “Paper Man”, his debut as a leader. Then, in 1969, he left Roach’s band to form, Music, Inc., a quartet with pianist Stanley Cowell, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Jimmy Hopps. Music, Inc. also evolved into a big band, which toured widely. In 1971, Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell formed Strata-East, a label that has continued to bring to market important artist-produced recordings. -

Wilson continues to sculpt an impressive career as a headliner, sideman, educator and jazz historian, and remains one of the most well-liked, in- demand and respected figures in jazz. Standing ovations greeted Wilson’s sets at the Kennedy Center, and shows were recorded for broadcast next year on NPR’s JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater, adding to Wilson’s extensive NPR presence, as outlined below. While in Washington D.C., Wilson showed his ongoing dedication as an educator and mentor, with a workshop at the Ellington School and a sold-out clinic for middle school students at the KC Jazz Club with his quartet, discussing the evolution of jazz from swing to be-bop, and Charlie Parker's influence in that movement. Recent, Current and Upcoming performances: - Wilson made his ‘Detroit debut’ as a leader, performing with his own band, during September’s Detroit Jazz Festival. MELODIC JAZZ DRUMMING by Jonathan David McCaslin A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto Copyright by Jonathan McCaslin 2015 ii MELODIC JAZZ DRUMMING by Jonathan David McCaslin Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto 2015 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines and explores how jazz drummers consider the concept of “melodic drumming” and how it relates to their own personal performance practice. The drum set, in the context of jazz music, can easily be considered a primarily rhythmic instrument by its very nature. It is, nevertheless, worthwhile and necessary to discuss the significance of how jazz drummers consider other musical elements in their own personal style. An overall musical approach to the drum set is recognized and encouraged, but the term and concept of playing “melodically” is also important. However, an exact definition of this idea is difficult to absolutely define. The definition and application of a melodic approach to jazz drumming is often as unique as the individual who chooses to either define or apply it. For the purpose of this research, the question of how jazz drummers incorporate and consider melody in their own playing was determined through a series of extensive interviews with contemporary jazz drummers. The interviews also explore how melody is viewed in the larger scope of jazz drumming. The findings from these interviews, combined with various other available sources, were then compared with the findings further organized, compared and discussed. iii In addition to the importance of playing the drums with an overall musical agenda, jazz drummers also describe using melody on the drum set in the context of being both an accompanist and a soloist. -
