Michael McCormack MP has been removed from the Cabinet and is now on the backbench. - David Littleproud MP retains his position as the Minster for Agriculture and is now also the Minister for Northern Australia. The role of Minister for Drought and Emergency Management will be given to Senator Bridget McKenzie. - Senator McKenzie will be returned to the Cabinet and is also the new Minister for Regionalisation, Regional Communications and Regional Education. - Keith Pitt MP, the Minister for Resources and Water will move to the outer Ministry, with his Northern Australia portfolio goes to David Littleproud MP. - Andrew Gee MP has been promoted to the Cabinet as the Minister for Defence Industry and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs. - Darren Chester MP, the former Minister for Veterans Affairs and Defence Personnel has been removed from the Cabinet and the Ministry. Thank you for the opportunity to provide the submission responsive to the Terms of Reference of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters’ (‘JSCEM’) regarding the Inquiry into and report on all aspects of the conduct of the 2019 Federal Election and matters related thereto. Introduction 2. I am a lawyer based in Brisbane, Queensland. I was a candidate in the 2019 federal election in the federal division of Dickson in Queensland (‘Dickson’). On or about 18 May 2018, I was preselected by the Queensland Greens for the federal division of Dickson. I spent the best part of 10 months campaigning in relation to the 2018-2019 federal election from about July 2018 to May 2019. 3. I note the broad Terms of Reference for this inquiry as follows: That the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters inquire into and report on all aspects of the conduct of the 2019 Federal Election and matters related thereto.1 4. The matter I wish to provide a submission on is the occurrence of misleading How-to- Vote brochures that were handed out at about 9 polling booths across Dickson on Election Day, 18 May 2019, under the title “Vote for Queensland – How to Vote for a Minor Party or Independent” and which directly contradicted the official How-to-Vote Card of my campaign and the official How-to-Vote cards of other Minority Parties and the Independent Candidate for Dickson. -

Even serious journalists began referring to the national legislature metaphorically as the “monkey house” to encapsulate the farcical behaviour they were obliged to report. With Tony Abbott being pre-emptively ousted from the prime ministership by Malcolm Turnbull in 2015, Turnbull himself was, in turn, unceremoniously usurped in bizarre circumstances in August 2018, handing over the leadership to his slightly bemused Treasurer Scott Morrison. Suddenly, Australia was being branded as the notorious “coup capital of the Western democracies”, with five prime ministers in five years and only one losing the high office at a general election. -

Greg Hunt MP Minister for Health JOINT MEDIA RELEASE Saturday 1 February 2020 UPDATED TRAVEL ADVICE TO PROTECT AUSTRALIANS FROM THE NOVEL CORONAVIRUS The National Security Committee of Cabinet met again today to consider new and urgent information regarding the novel coronavirus situation. Based on updated health advice from the Commonwealth’s Chief Medical Officer and the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee and the increased risk posed by the spread of novel coronavirus, we have decided to introduce strict new travel restrictions and new travel advice. Effective immediately, foreign nationals (excluding permanent residents) who are in mainland China from today forward, will not be allowed to enter Australia for 14 days from the time they have left or transited through mainland China. Australian citizens and permanent residents will still be able to enter, as will their immediate family members (spouses, legal guardians or dependants only). This exemption will be extended to airline crews who have been using appropriate personal protective equipment. I want to assure Australians that we are doing everything we can, through these increased actions, to protect Australians and keep them safe from what is an escalating threat. This is a temporary measure, which will be reviewed in 14 days. Any foreign nationals who do arrive in Australia notwithstanding the prohibition, and who choose not to immediately return to their port of origin, will be subject to mandatory quarantine. -

Why Australians are Unhappy with Government Tom Harley On the face of it, Australia has enjoyed a record run; the longest continuous period of economic growth as measured by gross domestic product (GDP) of any developed country. But there is a long list of “howevers”. Australia has one of the highest levels of household debt in the world. It has had no real wage growth of any substance for nearly 5 years. While the federal budget may return to surplus shortly for the first time in 10 years, the political system has made its management very difficult. The failure of governments to get majorities in the Senate – which has been the norm since the current Senate voting system was introduced in 1949 – has meant that the Senate, more often than not, refuses to wind back the extent of any transfer payment, preventing Government from controlling one of the critical aspects of spending. The Australian economy escaped the recession that followed the global financial crisis (GFC), partly from a profligate stimulus package by the Rudd Government that proved to be largely unnecessary, but mainly because of the demand by China for commodities and the associated capital expenditure boom in the Australian resource sector. As the boom wound back, infrastructure spending and domestic construction took up the slack. As a result, Australia has maintained a healthy growth rate. And yet, productivity growth has been low across most sectors in Australia, with an average of 1.25 percent annual growth over the past decade. Australians, by nature, are iconoclastic. This iconoclasm has turned into a savage disregard for many critical institutions however, largely because of institutional failure; notably the major banks (which have been the subject of a Royal Commission) and other major financial institutions such as the AMP Society, formerly a pillar of Australian financial rectitude. -
