Film Screening: Calais Children: A Case to Answer Yorkshire Museum, Wednesday 20 June, 2.30pm – 4pm early years & family events Why did the UK leave nearly 2,000 children in the Calais Jungle as it burnt… when many had a legal | right to be in the UK? And what happened to them next? Winner of the London Independent Film Awards 2017, Calais Children: A Case to Answer follows the young people over the year since they left the Jungle with interviews with Lord Dubs, volunteer groups, and lawyers. The film will be followed by Q&As with the director, Sue Clayton. Donations will be accepted towards the Calais Children’s ongoing support. FREE. Mindfulness Based Creativity Course Tuesdays 25 September; 2, 9, 16, 23 October; and 6, 13, 20 November, 10.30am – 1.30pm Mindfulness Based Creativity (MBCr) is an 8-week group course exploring the relationship between mindfulness and creativity as a means of playfully enhancing wellbeing and getting in touch with living the life we always imagined. It provides an exploration of mindfulness meditation and creative writing and drawing exercises in each session. With Dr Lauri Bower of the Northern Centre for Mindfulness and Compassion and professional artist Clare Belbin-Carlile. £250 early bird, or £275 for the 8 weeks. Add your ideas and suggestions for new artworks for the gallery to the ‘wish-list wall’ in the Studio. Your drawing can earn you an Arts Award sticker (see below). early years & family events Included in gallery admission. No need to book. | Arts Award Discover An introductory award aimed at 5 to 9 year olds (although any child can take part). York Museums Trust, Explore York Libraries and Archives, York Minster, York Army Museum and York Theatre Royal are offering children the opportunity to gain Arts Award Discover through taking practical workshops | part in any three creative activities and finding out about artists and crafts people. Collect a stamp or sticker at each activity then come to the either York Explore on Friday 31 August talks or The Marquee in Dean’s Park on Saturday 1 September between 1pm and 3pm to complete your award by telling us what you did. Remember you need to tell us what you have learnt about an artist too. After talking to you we will apply for an Arts Award certificate for you which will be posted to your home. There is a cost of £4 for this certificate. York Museums Trust provides a range of activities and events for children under 5 to help them engage with the collections and exhibitions. We currently offer two types of Museum Monkeys sessions across our sites: Museum Baby for under 2s and Early Years Explorers for ages 2 – 5. Kids Go FREE plus there’s FREE entry for adults with a YMT Card – 12 months of unlimited access to all York Museums Trust sites.     Accessibility Information for Visitors Yorkshire Museum Accessibility We aim to enable as many visitors as possible to experience the entire museum, including the stunning setting of the museum gardens. We want to encourage as much access as possible in order to enhance all of our visitor’s experience. As such the following measures are in place and details of any limitations are included. Physical access The museum is set within York Museum Gardens. The Gardens are fully wheelchair accessible with gently sloping pathways. There is a ramp to the left hand side of the museums main entrance. The museum is on three floors and there is a lift situated by the main staircase. The lower ground and the ground floor are fully accessible to wheelchair users. The first floor is mainly accessible but the reading room and the historic library are only accessible via a short flight of 8 steps with a small landing half way up. There is a map of the museum available to download from our website. http://www.yorkshiremuseum.org.uk/your-visit/map-of-the-museum/ The TA Hall This large auditorium seats around 280 people and has 10 designated wheelchair spaces. This space is used for lectures, films and special events. There is a loop system available in this space. Pushchairs Pushchairs can be taken into the galleries or alternatively left in a safe space at the reception area. Always remember to take any valuables with you. Lift Access The three floors of the museum can be accessed by the lift. In the unlikely event of the museum being evacuated and the lift being unavailable, visitors on the ground floor can exit via the main doors at the front of the museum; visitors on the lower ground level can be led straight out the back of the museum.

    NEWSLETTER - WINTER 2020 VIEW FROM THE CHAIR I have chosen a portrait of North Yorkshire-born Dr. Thomas Gale by Sir Godfrey Kneller for the image to introduce my final ‘view’. He was the subject of my first Lunchtime Talk. Commissioned by Samuel Pepys in 1689 for his library in London, Dr. Gale was prominent in Pepys’ circle, which included Sir Isaac Newton and John Evelyn, and he was Master of St. Paul’s School in London, a reforming Dean of York and an acquisitive North Yorkshire Sir Godfrey Kneller, Dr. Thomas Cole, York Art landowner. On Pepys’ death the Gallery Collection, by Permission of YMT. portrait transferred to the Gale estate in Scruton, where it remained on display for more than two centuries until Hans Hess purchased it at auction in 1953 for the Gallery’s collection. Portraiture has been a particular interest of mine since I first visited an Art Gallery. Being interested in local and social history, portraits can reveal details about the period in which the sitter lived, suggest their personal circumstances and bring to mind events that were 1 occurring during their lifetime. A canvas is fertile ground for an artist’s talent; a very personal or perhaps imagined representation of the subject, who may have employed them, intrigued them or was a chance encounter. Fortunately for the researcher, York Art Gallery does possess a comprehensive archive for many of the works in its collection. The narrative accompanying the portrait on display helps to bring the subject to life. York Art Gallery has a substantial and diverse collection of portraiture from more than seven centuries, from the fourteenth- century imagined image of St Zenobius, the first Bishop of Florence, to Sir Herbert Read, Art Historian and President of this Charity, or Henry Baines, Botanist, who was responsible for creating York Museum Gardens.

The plan‟s Headline Priorities include that York Castle Museum should be subject to a major capital project and developing the Castle area as a cultural quarter Thinking and planning for the development of the Castle Museum is being carried out in close co-operation with colleagues from CYC in order to take a strategic approach to the entire Castle Area. The quality of the current provision has recently been evidenced by winning the national award for Family Friendly museum and appearing for the first time in Trip advisor top ten museums (see below). Provision that is a source of inspiration and enjoyment for all and a stimulus for learning and skills development Another Headline Priority in the Forward Plan is excellent, high profile programming, including strategic YMT-led events to attract visitors to York and high quality exhibitions at York Art Gallery. Following on from its major renovation and redisplay in 2015-16, the Gallery‟s programme of major exhibitions has now begun. Meanwhile at York Castle Museum the new „Shaping the Body‟ exhibition is proving extremely popular with visitors. The exhibition explores 400 years of fashion, food and lifestyles to show the impact of all three on our bodies. It covers some difficult subjects but with a light touch. Amongst others, the exhibition has been a stimulus for learning and engagement with LGBT individuals and groups.

    YMT Report Against Core Partnership Objectives – January to June 2018 Creation of museum and gallery provision capable of contributing to positioning York as a world class cultural centre YMT has a four-year Business Plan for the years 2018-19 to 2021-22 which indicates how the Trust will pursue and achieve the five headlines priorities from its Forward Plan 2016-2021. - Deliver the York Castle Museum (YCM) major capital project, including collection and storage rationalisation, and develop the Castle area as a cultural quarter. - Excellent, high profile programming, including strategic YMT-led events to attract visitors to York and high quality exhibitions at York Art Gallery. - Expanding Enterprises and fundraising activities, building on success, becoming a more business-like charity and increasing our income streams and resilience. - Ensuring a 21st century Visitor Experience, pro-actively engaging visitors to sites and online - Improving York’s and York Museums Trust’s profile through local, regional and international leadership, partnership and delivering on all expectations of key stakeholders. The Business Plan specifies aims and measurable targets for the teams within the Trust to realise our ambitions. We have an Operational plan and report to Trustees each quarter on our performance and the operational KPIs. One of the headline priorities is the redevelopment of the Castle Museum and the Castle Gateway. Planning for this initiative continues in close collaboration with CYC and the Castle Gateway Masterplan. We have been working on accelerating the project with CYC in the recent Leeds City region Pooled rates bid and are seeking to create a more joined up offer with English Heritage following the recent news on their visitor centre at Cliffords Tower.
