Many thanks to all village residents who have supported our local fundraising events over the past year, including the lady (whose identity I am unsure of) who donated the proceeds from her stall at the Community Market.

Last year was an extremely busy one for the shelter at Debenham. The cattery has been overflowing with last season’s kittens still arriving at Christmas. In addition to the dogs that Jayne takes from the dog pound once their time has expired. There is a long list of family dogs waiting for kennel space. All money raised is used for vet bills, food etc.

Message from Rita Ruffles

It is so nice to be back home. I would like to thank the people of Badingham for their kindness, cards and good wishes. It really helped to know you were thinking of me.

Merlin will never forget his 70th birthday. I might have enjoyed a helicopter ride – but not like that! After my 3 weeks in hospital in France I came home in style, in a Lear Jet no less, but again not the most comfortable flight.

I am looking forward to getting out and about again. Thank you to my many visitors – so nice of you to pop in to see me.

Rita

PS I didn’t do it to get out of sending Christmas cards – better luck this year!

Page 17 SIGN UP FOR SPECIAL EVENT - 2012

Suffolk’s Special Constabulary team are planning to hold an evening in to encourage volunteers to sign up.

The recruitment event is to be on Thursday 3rd May – so if you are interested in finding out more visit www.suffolk.police.uk, where you can get further information, or call Mick Mann on 01473 613638 or email [email protected] to register your interest. Suffolk’s Special Constabulary are a team of dedicated volunteers who work alongside regular paid police officers to help keep our communities safe. Special Constables come from all walks of life and backgrounds. Many have full-time jobs and family commitments but still find the time to give some- thing back by volunteering to assist with policing the county. Others see volunteering as a chance to make new friends and learn new skills, perhaps in advance of applying to become a full-time officer or just to boost their CV. Either way being a Special Constable can be challenging, rewarding and interesting and you get to play an important role in keeping Suffolk residents safe. To join you should be 18 or over and have the ability to think on your feet, work as part of a team and keep cool in difficult situations, but there is no need for formal qualifications and full training is given. Once up and running you will be out patrolling, dealing with incidents and assisting in catching those responsible for committing crime. You may also get involved in event policing, such as local carnivals, help carry out drug warrants and will become a valued member of a local Safer Neighbourhood Team. The recruitment evenings at Framlingham will give anyone living or working in the , , , , , , Sax- mundham, Woodbridge or Framlingham area the chance to find out more - there is no obligation and you will have the chance to talk to some of those who already volunteer. The event will start at 7:30pm and will be held at The Technology Centre, Station Road, Framlingham, IP13 9EZ.

Page 18 News from Dennington CEVCP School

2012 looks like being a busy year for us. We have already celebrated Chinese New Year with , our partner school. The children all got together and made Chinese dragons (as it’s the year of the Dragon), had fun with Maths and sampled a typical Chinese meal including a New Year cake all cooked by Jackie, our school cook. The chil- dren enjoyed the food judging by the comments.

Our themes this term are Antarctica (Class 1), Transport Trouble-shooters (Class 2 and 3). The children will be visiting different places or having visitors come and talk to them to help learn about these themes. They have already ‘flown’ to Antarctica to see what the landscape is like and all the children in Class 2 and 3 have applied and had interviews for the post of ‘trouble-shooter’. They wait with trepidation to see who was successful!

Don’t forget if you would like to volunteer to help in school, be it to hear children read or to help with the arts side of things, please contact the school on 01728 638206.

Dear All

What a lovely surprise and thank you so much for the box of shortbread biscuits. How did you know they are my favourite biscuits?

I hope you all have a lovely Christmas with all your families and I wish you all the very best for 2012.

Once again a huge thank you.

Dear Sonja

Please pass on my sincere thanks to BCC for the delicious box of shortbread. Unfortunately it soon became empty! – never mind, it will soon be Christmas again.

Best wishes to all, David Clarke

Page 21 A Year at Badingham Playschool

The snowy start to the year was much appreciated by the children and added a bit of excitement to a dreary January. In February we had a trip to Suffolk Wildlife Park - it was a wet and wild one. Really strong winds and sudden downpours meant ducking for cover every now and then but so much fun all the children.

March was a big month for us as it saw the opening of the new baby room ‘Little Fishes’. Michele saw the need for child care for the younger chil- dren in the area and, after months of working with the Suffolk County Council and Ofsted to get the room up to spec and get the grant to fund it, we had our Grand Opening. My little Emilia tested the room out to its full extent until exhausted she fell asleep on the snuggle bed!

Once again thanks to Michele’s work in getting grants, in April there was a new kitchen fitted in the Village Hall, the toilets were upgraded and additional damp-proofing added to some of the external walls. Thank you so much to the Village Hall Committee for supporting us and letting us make the changes.

The Summer term signalled the start of swimming lessons for the children. Our thanks to Claire and Richard for letting us use their pool free of charge, so that we can offer the lessons to the children at no extra cost to the parents.

Over the last two years Michele has been working on the National Strategies ECaT (Every Child a Talker) project in this area. She has gained many qualifications through this project and has become a lead setting in the area of speech, language and communication.

Page 22 The other staff have not been idle – two have gained their Level 3 qualification in working with babies and young children and all have updated their first aid and safeguarding children certificates.

In June, the Suffolk branch of the Pre-School Learning Alliance, to which Playschool is affiliated, celebrated its 50th birthday by organised a day at Jimmy’s Farm. Again, the weather wasn’t kind but the children enjoyed planting vegetables, visiting the animals and the butterfly house was a big hit with all the children and adults.

September was a busy month for us. We visited windmill with brave parents and children going up the mill. The Teddy Bear Parachute Drop, with the new attraction of the trebuchet and teddy hunt, was even better attended this year than last. We hope to do it again in September.

At the end of September we had a lovely Autumn trip to Red Barn Farm for apple picking, tractor demonstrations and forest school activities in the woods. As a bonus, we got to make apple pies with the day’s pickings and everyone loves a good apple pie. Bob and John have kindly given us permission to do Forest Schools work in the woods throughout 2012. We were also able to visit the Marybelle cows, who provide us with milk, at their farm at . We spent a lovely morning with the chickens and Shetland ponies as well as the cows.

Nearly at the end of the year, it was time for the Ladies Shopping Night. It was our first one without Lindsey, who had always done all the organ- ising, so it was a little daunting but we made it through without too many hiccups and I think everyone had a good time. Then into Decem- ber and time for the Nativity, always much enjoyed by children and adults alike, followed by the end of term party. Now it’s the Christmas holidays and we are fast approaching the New Year, our 39th as a Play- school. Its promising to be full of fun and interesting things to do and learn. Lynn Foster Page 23 Page 24 I thought you might like this reminder of January 1987 when we were stuck at home for days in the snow. Editing the Echo for the Feb-Mar 1987 issue was Colin Vickery who lived at Long Lea.

“Have you experienced a Suffolk winter?” I was once asked. “No? You just wait then!”

As I write this editorial, Cedric King from Brick Kiln Farm and Merlin Ruffles have just finished clearing the snow from the Potash, whilst Mr Green’s team of Robert, Glenn and Charlie from Red House Farm have driven a pathway through the drifts towards . No longer are the residents of Mill Road an isolated outpost as at last we can reach the Church, pub, post office and that place called the outside world.

However, the community spirit in the area has been excellent over the four days of our confinement. Neighbours have been volunteering to do all sorts of chores for each other during the worst of the weather so ensuring that those basic necessities of life continue – Mr Ruffles’ digger was in great demand; milk was fetched from Mr Dewsbery’s Plains Farm; bread was delivered by sledge and Mr Green kindly organised a shopping trailer service across the fields to Peasenhall. Throughout it all the children have had that added bonus of an unscheduled holiday and I have had the opportunity to meet some of the captive recipients of the ECHO!

If this all reads rather parochial – then apologies but I’m sure that these events typify what has happened elsewhere in Badingham and, indeed, throughout the surrounding villages.

So we can now all look forward to Spring – or can we? The local weather sages inform me that conditions can well get worse before they get better and that February is often the month for the heaviest snowfall and lowest temperatures. It sounds like a lot of doom and gloom to me but I suppose it might be an idea to invest in some thermals just in case!

Speaking of ideas, I should like to hear from anybody who has a suggestion – supported by material – for a feature in the ECHO. There must be people out there in the icy wastes who have a story to tell. So please let us hear from you and especially the younger readers who might like to start their own regular page.

Finally, I hope I might be permitted, through these pages, to thank everybody who has been enquiring for me during my recent illness. I’m still alive and kicking snowdrifts!
