KILASPORTFISHING Unforgettable Experiences off the Big Island’s Kona Coast

xperience a trip of a lifetime aboard one of Kona’s finest boats. “Kila Kila,” a beautiful 53′ Merritt operated by Captain Gabe E Heflin, is one of the largest, most comfortable and luxurious boats in the Kona fleet. Kona is home to some of the world’s best offshore fishing. Its calm, deep blue water offers six different species of billfish and is considered to have the best Blue Marlin fishing in the Pacific. Other billfish, such as Black Marlin, Stripe Marlin, Swordfish, Spearfish and an occasional Sailfish are also caught here along with other pelagic fish such as Yellowfin Tuna (Ahi), Dorado – Dolphinfish (Mahi Mahi) and Wahoo (Ono). The place to catch your fish of a lifetime and “We look forward to giving every client experience world class fishing is right here! This means the action is close to shore so anglers spend more time fishing and less time running to the fishing grounds.

10 I mokuleleairlines.com Issue 1 I 11 Captain Gabe Heflin has over 20 years of combined commercial and sportfishing experience. “We look forward to giving every client that steps aboard Kila Kila an ocean experience they will never forget. We want their time with us to be the most memorable part of their stay here in Hawaii,” he says. “My crew and I are dedicated to customer service and strive to meet the individual goals of each of our guests. While we specialize in big game fishing, we also get requests for snorkeling and whale watching. We are happy to accommodate the desires of all that step aboard, and we are committed to excellence in all that we do.” Captain Gabe’s attention to detail shows in every aspect, from well-maintained tackle to an immaculate, well-kempt vessel. He looks forward to having both experienced and beginner anglers alike. “Kila Kila is a clean, well maintained, tournament-winning boat. We offer custom charters to fit all your needs. You will be guided by experienced professionals who know the waters of the Kona Coast. Come enjoy our comfortable air conditioned salon which is great for families, friends and even business gatherings. Whether it’s a tournament, a full day of fishing, snorkeling trip or just a half-day cruise, we offer great service to all aboard.” Captain Gabe Heflin Kila Kila Sportfishing (53′ Merritt) www.kilakilasportfishing.com . www.gabeheflin.com [email protected] (808) 896-2711

“While we specialize in big game fishing, we also get requests for snorkeling and whale watching.” - Captain Gabe Heflin

There are typically two styles of fishing in Kona. One is trolling handcrafted lures, and the other is live baiting with Aku (Skipjack Tuna) ranging from 2 to 15 lbs. Trolling with lures at a speed of 7 to 8 knots is designed to attract large game fish by creating popping and splashing mimicking that of a bait fish. Strikes on lures can be very exciting. Usually you can watch it happen and will be followed up with impressive acrobatics of a Blue Marlin or Stripe Marlin. Other pelagic fish will also eat a lure, including Ahi, Mahi Mahi and Ono. Live baiting is done by slow trolling a rigged live bait at a speed of 2 knots. Depending on the conditions, this can also be a very productive way to catch fish here in a specific area. Fishing in Kona is year round, with different species being more prominent in different months. Blue Marlin ranging from 90- 1000 lbs. are present year round, and the summer months have the most productive numbers. During our winter months, Stripe Marlin, Shortbill Spearfish and Mahi Mahi give us our greatest numbers of fish caught.

Visit to Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children by Torrey Meister, Gavin Beschen and Kalani Robb.

isiting a medical clinic to receive treatment for cystic fibrosis (CF) can hardly be considered anyone’s idea of fun. So it came V as welcome news when brothers Charles and James Dunlop, founders of Ambry Genetics, discovered a way to help kids with CF breathe easier, simply by teaching them how to surf. Inspired by a medical journal article that documented the benefits of treating CF with saline mist, the Dunlop brothers wondered if breathing in ocean air would have the same effect. So in 2007 they spearheaded a “surf experience day” for CF patients in Newport Beach, California “Mauli Ola has been a blessing to us. It has improved our quality of life.” - Oahu resident Bernadette Antonelli

and Hawaiian pipeline master Jamie O’Brien came out to assist. The patients, parents, doctors and the surfers left the beach that day with smiles on their faces and the Mauli Ola Foundation was born.

Group ride at Haleiwa Beach Park with Kala Alexander, Kealii Mamala and Buttons Kaluhiokalani.

Issue 1 I 15 Conner now surfs on a regular basis and the Antonellis say that the improvements to his health have been dramatic.”He has CF clinic every quarter, and his breathing capacity has increased every time,” Alex states. “He’s still getting better than he was before.” MOF also brings professional surfers and action sports athletes to visit CF patients in children’s hospitals. “When you can hand a sick patient a cool hat and shirt and sunglasses and sign a poster for them, it makes them feel cool in a very uncool environment.” Serna notes. “Mauli Ola has been a blessing to us,” Bernadette says. “It has improved our quality of life.” MOF’s goal is to bring the joys and benefits of surfing to as many CF patients as possible, including those who live in landlocked areas. To learn how you can help and to see a calendar of upcoming events, visit www.mauliola.org. As the MOF team likes to say, “May the wave heal us all.” Visit to Children’s Hospital with MMA Fighter-Respect in the Cage Champ Brian Ortega, Kalani Robb, Kala Alexander, stuntman/actor Michael Papajohn and Teddy Navarro.

The goal of Mauli Ola, which means “breath of life” in Hawaiian, is to help children and adults with CF enjoy the benefits of surfing as a natural treatment for their condition. As they surf, they breathe in the salty mist that lies right above the ocean’s surface and it helps break up the congestion in their lungs. Buttons Surf School, headed by surfing pro Buttons Kaluhiokalani, hosted the first CF surf experience day on Oahu in 2008 and has been MOF’s official surf school on Oahu ever since, helping local and visiting kids with CF get the ultimate saline treatment of Hawaii’s clean, salty water. MOF has received a generous outpouring of heart, soul and aloha, including the honor of being named the official charity of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. MOF Vice President Kala Alexander spearheads the efforts to help kids with CF, and in the past five years, MOF has introduced surfing to more than 1,200 CF patients, not only here in Hawaii, but nationwide. “What sets this connection apart is that these kids aren’t just having a fun day at the beach,” explains Bobby Serna, Surf Experience Director for MOF. “They’re actually going home with a lung treatment. They’re breathing better.” Oahu residents Bernadette and Alex Antonelli described the significant impact the program has had on their ten-year-old son Conner. “We decided to go out and try it and it was just absolutely amazing,” Bernadette says. “The first time he got on the water and they got him standing up right away, I broke out in tears. Conner has always had trouble with sports because he couldn’t keep up with the other kids. This was something he could do and he was having so much fun and the smiles were just amazing.”
