NEW DI!Ull1 M.AY 7 President Pranab Mukher- jee will dedicate RuPay, India's own card payment network, to the nation on Thursday. The RuPay card isaccepted at all ATMs (1.6lakh), 95 per cent of Point of'Sale(PoS) ter minals (9.45 lakh) and most of the eCom merchants (10,000) in the country. A variant of the card called Kisan Card is now being issued by all public sector banks in addition to the mainstream debit card which has been issued by 4.3 banks. A variant of pre-paid RuPay card would shortly be launched by IRCTC. Over 150 cooperative banks and regional rural banks in the country have also issued the RuPay ATM card. The total number of cards issued as on date is 17 mill ion and is growing at a rate of about 3 million per month. This card symbolises the capabilities of the banking industry in India to build a card payment network so that dependency on an international card scheme is minimised. - TNS

The system has been developed by National Payment Corporation Ltd (NPCL).To make this system acceptable internationally, the company is in advance talks with Discover Financial Services of US for Western world and JCB of Japan for Eastern world. Conceived and launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), RuPay facilitates electronic payment at all Indian banks and financial institutions, and will compete with MasterCard and Visa.RuPay holders will be able to carry out transactions on three channels -ATMs,Point of Sales and online.RuPay will initially be a payment option within the country and is likely to become a mode of payment overseas as well later. "For a large country like India with a rapidly growing economy,the volume of payment transactions, specially those settled through cards, will be significant in the years ahead. Transactions which are mostly settled today either by way of cash or cheque will progressively make way for card-based payment transactions as the economy matures and Internet penetration increases said President Mukherjee. The RuPay platform is expected to reduce cash transactions.According to NPCI, since the transaction processing will happen domestically, it would lead to lower cost of clearing and settlement per transaction. This will make the transaction cost affordable and drive usage of RuPay cards in the industry. It is also accepted by 9.45 1akh plus PoS (point of sale) terminals in India.Most of the eCom merchants in the country adding up to 10,000 are now accepting RuPay cards as well, according to official sources. A variant of this card called the Kisan Card is also being issued by public sector banks. This is in addition to the mainstream debit card issued by around 43 banks in India.
