Freddie» West, VC, CBE, MC
Air Commodore «Freddie» West, V.C., C.B.E., M.C. P. R. REID DIPLOMAT ZWISCHEN DEN FRONTEN EIN LEBENSBERICHT Mit 14 Abbildungen VERLAG HUBER & CO. -

Volunteer Role Summary Livestock Lookering Lookers are reliable people who love spending time outdoors and want to help look after the livestock that maintain our amazing chalk grassland. They make sure that the sheep, horses and cows that graze the partnership area are healthy and report any problems to a member of staff. Up on the Downs work in partnership with Kent Wildlife Trust, National Trust and White Cliffs Countryside Partnership and look after over 500 hectares of chalk grassland in the Dover and Folkestone area. We need to use livestock to graze these sites to make sure that this grassland has rich and varied wildlife. With such a large area to look after and 10 or more herds of cows or flocks of sheep needing to be looked after at any one time we are dependent upon the hard work of volunteers to help us make sure that animals are in good condition. By getting involved, you could… Ensure that the highest possible animal welfare standards are being maintained Make a real difference to how the landscape is managed for future generations Spend more time outside and active Working alongside dedicated countryside management professionals, learning skills along the way Join a friendly and varied team and make some new friends What’s involved? John Hawkesworth Scope and Content
JOHN HAWKESWORTH SCOPE AND CONTENT Papers relating to film and television producer, scriptwriter and designer JOHN STANLEY HAWKESWORTH. Born: London, 7 December 1920 Died: Leicester, 30 September 2003 John Hawkesworth was born the son of Lt.General Sir John Hawkesworth and educated at Rugby and Queen's College, Oxford. Between school and university he spent a year studying art at the Sorbonne in Paris, where Picasso corrected his drawings once a week. Following the military tradition of his family, Hawkesworth joined the Grenadier guards in 1940 and had a distinguished World War II record. In 1943 he married Hyacinth Gregson-Ellis and on demobilisation from the army began work in the film industry as an assistant to Vincent Korda. As art director he worked on many films for British Lion including The THIRD MAN (GB, 1949), OUTCAST OF THE ISLANDS (GB, 1951), and The SOUND BARRIER (GB, 1952). As a freelance designer he was involved with The MAN WHO NEVER WAS (GB, 1955) and The PRISONER (GB, 1955). Joining the Rank Organisation as a trainee producer, Hawkesworth worked on several films at Pinewood and was associate producer on WINDOMS WAY (GB, 1957) and TIGER BAY (GB, 1959). Hawkesworth's writing for television began with projects including HIDDEN TRUTH (tx 9/7/1964 - 6/10/1964), BLACKMAIL (Associated Rediffusion tx 1965 - 1966) and the 13 part BBC series CONAN DOYLE (tx 15/1/1967 - 23/4/1967), before embarking on the acclaimed LWT series The GOLDROBBERS (tx 6/6/1969 - 29/4/1969). It was with the latter that the Sagitta Production Company who were to produce the highly successful Edwardian series UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS (tx 1970 - 1975) for LWT, came into existence, making Hawkesworth and his long term professional partner Alfred Shaughnessy household names. -

John Thomas Hawes Was a Well Known Figure in Chatham and Was Mayor from Late 1938 Until the End of the Second World War in 1945
The Newsletter of the Friends of Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre Issue Number 08: November 2007 Christmas Number John Thomas Hawes, Mayor of Chatham, dressed as Father Christmas distributing Christmas gifts to children outside the National Theatre cinema, Chatham, circa 1938 to 1939. John Thomas Hawes was a well known figure in Chatham and was mayor from late 1938 until the end of the Second World War in 1945. His granddaughter, FOMA member Jean Slater, remembers him well and has indexed his pictorial diaries, held at the Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre, and from which this photograph is taken. The diary was dedicated ‘To my granddaughter Jean’. Jean believes that the festive handing out of gifts was her grandfather’s own idea, and the children in the photograph above had probably just attended the weekly Saturday morning matinee. Jean recalls the bags the children were given contained fruit, such as an apple, banana or orange, and sweets. Jean’s nickname for her grandfather was Beve, in the navy the name for someone with a beard. JT Hawes’ beard also stood him in good stead as a Charles Dickens’ double in the 1931 pageant at Rochester Castle, where he performed with Dame Sybil Thorndike. More from Jean Slater inside... From the Chairman Tessa Towner, Chairman. It hardly seems that three months have passed since our last newsletter. First, I would like to acknowledge publicly the work that our editor, Amanda Thomas, has put into yet another great issue and to say a big thank you to Amanda’s son, Alexander, for all the hard work he has put in, setting up the system on The Clock Tower website to take passwords for all our members. -
