Cataloging of the papers was completed in 1989 prior to their transfer to the Huntington. -

Evry Léon Schatzman Jean-Pierre Luminet Laboratoire Univers et Théories, CNRS-UMR 8102, Observatoire de Paris, F-92195 Meudon cedex, France E-mail: [email protected] This article describes the life and work of French astrophysicist Evry Schatzman (1920-2010). He was a pioneer in the study of white dwarfs during the 1940s and was one of the proponents of the wave heating theory of the solar corona. He made important contributions to the fields of internal stellar structure, novae, mechanisms of acceleration of cosmic rays, the role of turbulent diffusion in stellar evolution and its consequences for the lithium abundance, and the rate of solar neutrinos. Schatzman is mostly recognized as the creator of the French school of theoretical astrophysics. Although he was not the first theoretician of astrophysics in his country, he was the first to have felt the need for a rapid development of this subject in France, and the first to teach it and to guide the path of many young researchers. Many of them became involved, and some leaders, in space science. Born : Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, 16 September 1920 Died : Paris, 25 April 2010 There is hardly a field of theoretical astrophysics that was not addressed by Evry Schatzman. His father, Benjamin, was a dentist born in Tulcea, Romania, who emigrated at a young age with his family in Palestine during the First Aliyah (1882-1903). As an adult he settled in France. Evry’s mother, Cecile Khan, was the daughter of a secretary of the Israelite Consistory in Paris. Evry began to study fundamental physics at the Ecole Normale Supérieure of Paris in November 1939. -

SAFFRAY Il fut assistant à l’Observatoire de Paris de février à mai 1856. SAFIR, Horia Il travaillait au service d’astrophysique en 1937. Il a publié : - Etude des variations du spectre de Cassiopeiae (avec Chalonge, CRAS 203, 1329, 1936) ; -Etude du rayonnement continu de quelques étoiles entre 3100 et 4600 Å (avec Arnulf, Barbier et Chalonge, Annales d’Astrophysique 1, 293, 1938). SAGERET, Jules (1861- ) Jules Sageret est né à Paris en 1861. Ingénieur et homme de lettres, il a publié : Le système du monde des Chaldéens à Newton (Alcan, Paris, 1913), Le système du monde, de Pythagore à Eddington (Payot, Paris, 1931) et Le nouvel univers (Gallimard, Paris, 1940) parmi de nombreux autres ouvrages. (IBF : II 571, 46) SAGNAC, Marie Marc Georges (1869-1928) Georges Sagnac est né le 14 octobre 1869 à Périgueux (Dordogne). Son père était agent d’affaires. Ancien élève de l’École normale supérieure (promotion 1890), il soutint à Paris en 1900 une thèse de doctorat ès sciences physiques : De l’optique des rayons de Röntgen et des rayons secondaires qui en dérivent. Pendant la guerre, il s’attacha à résoudre le problème du repérage nocturne des sources sonores aériennes et inventa un appareil qui fut construit en grande série et équipa tous les postes de tir de la DCA du camp retranché de Paris. Il fut chargé en 1920 du cours de physique théorique et physique céleste à l’Université de Paris ; cette chaire venait d’être créée et confiée à Aimé Cotton qui l’occupa jusqu’en 1922 ; Sagnac consacra son enseignement à l’astronomie (mouvement des astres, étoiles doubles, nébuleuses...) et aux théories de Lorentz et d’Einstein. -

Still more shocking than the metaphysical assumption of some initial singularity, is the constant insistence upon the so-called cosmological principle of “homogeneity” and “isotropy” of the Universe. Observations do contradict this principle. And to me, the inhomogeneous, fractal at least on a certain scale range, of the distribution of matter is in itself an important cosmological fact, hitherto almost neglected. Moreover difficult- ties as to the applicability of the second principle of thermodynamics, observations of abnormal redshifts, etc., are casting large doubts not only upon the standard cosmological models, but even on the interpretation of the observed redshift as due solely to a universal expansion. Key words. Cosmology—Big Bang. 1. The initial singularity My own doubts concerning the Big Bang are very ancient. Already, in 1957, when Paul Couderc, Evry Schatzman and myself published “L’Astronomie au jour le jour” (Couderc et al. 1957), Paul Couderc was very much in favour of the Gamow’s Universe, whenever I had my doubts, then expressed in a non-signed footnote to the chapter written by Couderc. I had been rather shocked indeed, two years earlier, in Roma, by the equation: The “fiat lux” equals the “big bang” – implied by a long discourse, fiercely put in front of the IAU by the Pope Pius the XIIth (1951, 1952). So far, it was a question located in the realm of nonscientific disputes. But clearly, the metaphysical implications have been of a great weight to push some in the direction of the big bang, some others, like Einstein himself, definitely against.. -
