For his accomplishments, Gattuso was named 1995 Division I-AA Coach of the Year by the ECAC Intercollegiate Football Conference, the MAAC Football League and Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette. Gattuso’s 1996 team finished the regular season 10-0-0 (8-0-0 in the MAAC), mark- ing the school’s first undefeated regular season since 1941. SEAN MCGOWAN Defensive Coordinator/Def. Backs Fordham ’98

Sean McGowan is in his first season as defensive coordinator for the Dukes. The Connecticut native comes to DU after serving as a gradu- ate assistant at the University of Pittsburgh for three seasons. While at Pitt, McGowan worked in recruiting for one season before moving on to help coach the defensive backfield for two years. Among the players he helped coach was three-time All-Big East defensive back Ramon Walker who was drafted in the fifth round by the in the 2002 NFL Draft. McGowan, who was born in Waterbury, Conn. before moving to Cheshire, Conn. attend- ed Cheshire High School. He went on to be a two-year letterman at Fordham University where he started out as a quarterback before moving to safety for his junior and senior seasons. He received his business degree from Fordham in 1998. McGowan began his coaching career at Division III Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif. where he served as quarterbacks coach. Prior to enrolling at Toledo, he was an all-area and all-conference lineman for St. Mary’s High School in Orchard Lake, Mich., where he lettered four times in football and basketball, twice in track and once in lacrosse. He was part of a St. Mary’s football team that was ranked No. 14 nationally by USA Today in his sophomore year. Otterbacher, who earned a management degree from Toledo, is single and currently resides in Pittsburgh.

First-year coach Javon Ronel brings college playing experi- ence as well as the instruction he gained while playing in the same high school backfield as Marshall Faulk of the St. Louis Rams to the Duquesne staff. Ronel, who will work primarily with DU’s receivers, played running back and was a member of the special teams as a letterman at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas from 1993- 97. While at UNLV, he was part of the 1994 Rebels Las Vegas Bowl squad. He completed his degree in kinesiology from UNLV in 2000. Returning for his fourth season as director of football opera- tions is the senior-most member of the Duquesne football staff, John Rosato. Rosato, who previously served as an assistant coach, has been part of the DU program for 14 years. A 1973 graduate of Duquesne, Rosato was involved with the football program as a stu- dent, working with the ’73 club football national champions. Rosato, who was born in Pittsburgh, attended St. Mark’s High School in Erie, Pa., before enrolling at Duquesne. He is an active member of the Dukes Court Athletic Association. The 50-year-old Rosato resides in the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh and has three children — Nikki, 25, a Duquesne graduate, Danielle, 22 and John, 19.

Third-year offensive line coach Jim Sweeney brings 16 years of NFL experience to the Duquesne staff. The Pittsburgh native, who teamed with head coach Greg Gattuso to lead Pittsburgh Seton-La Salle High School to a WPIAL Class AA championship in 1979, joined the DU staff after retir- ing from the Pittsburgh Steelers two years ago. Sweeney was a four-year letterman and two-year starter at the University of Pittsburgh where he earned first-team All-East honors as a senior. He began his NFL career when he was picked by the in the second round (37th overall) of the 1984 draft. Sweeney spent 11 seasons with the Jets, followed by one year with the Seattle Seahawks.
