You Can Be Anything!

As many of you know, each year I have a President and CEO patch designed to give to the girls I meet. My patches are based on stories from my sons. Each son, who are now grown men, decided what they felt was one of the most important life lessons I have taught them. They said if the lesson was good enough for them, they would also be good for the girls. My first patch, from my oldest son, Benjamin, who now has a daughter of his own, is “Make Wise Choices.” Spencer, my second son, remembers me always telling him “It is important to look in the mirror and like who he sees looking back,” so this message became my second patch. My third son, Brooks, suffered with a physical disability as a young boy. He learned it was best to “Be Kind” even if others were not kind to him. He was very clear that his patch would be the “Be Kind” patch. That brings me to my newest patch. Christian, my stepson, was excited to get his own patch. When I first met him, he was very shy. He was always encouraged to try and experience everything life had to offer to help him get over his shyness and find his passion. Due to this encouragement he is now pursuing his dream of being a rock star – because he can be anything!

This program book provides countless opportunities for girls to make choices, like the girl they are becoming, be kind in their service to others and realize they can be anything.

I hope everyone who uses this great book discovers the world around them, connects with what they are passionate about and takes action to make a difference in the world.

Yours In Girl Scouting! Dawn Prasifka

14 | Girl Scouts - Diamonds 2018-2019 Program Resource Book STEAM Center

The STEAM Center at Burnham Woods is located at the Girl Scouts – Diamonds Midwest Region property in Fort Smith and is a place where girls can discover and explore their STEAM passions through hands-on, learning-by-doing activities in a girl-focused, girl-led environment.

A variety of programming and events are available on a regular basis at the STEAM Center, including STEAM focused programs and badge workshops, as well as training for leaders to feel comfortable facilitating the new GSUSA STEM-based Journeys on their own. We also host weekend programs, day camps and overnight adventures! Registration is required to attend programs so make sure to register in advance! Check out the Midwest region section for a listing of all our pre-scheduled workshops for this membership year.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) is a key program focus for Girl Scouts - Diamonds, and that focus is particularly strong at the newly enhanced space at Burnham Woods. Girl Scouting introduces girls of all ages to STEAM activities that help develop their creativity and hone their critical thinking skills. Whether it’s building a robot, becoming a chemist or conducting electrical experiments, we are helping girls move into a future that is constantly changing and evolving. Like all Girl Scout programs, STEAM activities offer girls the opportunity to explore and learn in a safe, peer-supportive, “ok-to-fail” environment. This increases girls’ confidence in their own abilities and encourages positive social development.

When girls participate in Girl Scout STEM programs, they benefit in four important ways: STEM Interest: Girls are excited about STEM subjects and want to learn more about them. STEM Confidence: Girls have confidence in their STEM skills and abilities. STEM Competence: Girls think scientifically to solve problems. STEM Value: Girls learn the importance and relevance of STEM to people and society.

Girls can participate in Girl Scouts in four different ways: through a traditional troop with two dedicated leaders, as an independently registered girl (IRG or Juliette), through one of our 2 Super Troops at select schools in Central Arkansas, or through our Special Initiatives programs in which we partner with schools and community centers to offer programming for Girl Scouts while they are at school. All these girls can participate in programs, attend events, earn awards, go camping, and even participate in our Fall Product and Girl Scout Cookie programs!

One fourth of our girls are funded through grants and donations. Girl Scouts is a nonprofit that depends on the 3 support of individual and corporate donors and grants to provide access to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. The Volunteer Toolkit (VTK) isn’t just for volunteers. The VTK is a digital tool that leaders can use to plan out their entire Girl Scout year, track finances, communicate with parents, and so much more. Parents can use the VTK to 4 get information on everything the troop is doing! Tell parents how they can access the VTK and see what wonderful, engaging programs their daughter is taking part in by being a Girl Scout.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program and the Fall Product Program are about much more than money. These programs give girls practical experience to let them develop 5 critical skills that will last a lifetime—goal setting, decision 5 making, money management, people skills and business ethics. Product program money (money earned from fall sales and cookies) can also help fund the Girl Scout year for girls and troops. Leaders can use product program proceeds to buy uniforms, allow girls to attend council-sponsored events and programs and even travel and camp.

You don’t need to have earned other awards to earn the prestigious GIrl Scout Gold Award! Girls who earn the Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouting, have access to many college scholarships as well as enter the 6 military one rank higher. Girl Scouts is so much more than camping, crafts and cookies! Our focus areas of STEAM, Outdoors and Camp, Life Skills and Leadership pave the way and set the standard for girls to try a variety of programming and hone skills 7 related to these areas and which allow them to become prepared, knowledgeable citizens of the world. Troop leaders don’t have to be the experts on every aspect of Girl Scouts! Our Volunteer Experience Team and Program Team are here to help you! We have a variety of training and methods of delivery to allow you enjoy your 8 year of Girl Scouting along with your girls and make it the most memorable experience yet. Check out the Adult and Volunteer Resource pages (pages 64-66) for more information.

Our Camps of Excellence and other properties are available for rental any time. Check out a list of rentable 9 activities that can be added on to trips on page 16 or check the properties page on our website for more details. Girl Scouts can give girls the world. If you love exploring different places and cultures, then Girl Scouts is the place for you. In addition to local, troop travel and council-led travel, girls can participate in Girl Scout Destinations, an 10 adventure program for girls ages 11 and older. With a ton of different trips to apply for every year, there’s something amazing for everyone to experience and the Diamonds Council offers financial assistance opportunities.

Travel is built on progression and Girl Scouts is a wonderful place for girls to learn how to plan and take exciting trips. Girl Scout Daisies, for example can begin with a short, local trip and progress into an overnight camping trip at one of the Girl Scouts – Diamonds Camps of Excellence properties. Brownies can start taking longer day trips and spend one or two nights away as a troop. Once your girls are Juniors they can start taking extended overnight trips with less homesickness, plus they are old enough to help plan many of the activities and accommodations. But, we don’t just stop there! Girls 11 and older can apply for GSUSA Destinations or plan a trip with their troop or the council to travel across the or even the world!

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Did you know that Girl Scout cookie proceeds only account for about 83% of the Diamonds Council’s annual budget? It is our generous donors who cover the rest. Our donors and sponsors, including individuals, families, Girl Scout volunteers and members, alumnae, civic groups, businesses and corporations, and charitable foundations, are the agents of change in a Girl Scout’s journey to leadership.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN OUR COMMUNITY INVESTS IN GIRL SCOUTS? ⚬ More girls join Girl Scouts! Donations are critical to providing recruitment flyers and supplies, New Troop Starter Kits, and volunteer training, which helped start 95 new troops serving almost 1,000 girls last year. ⚬ Girls join more (and improved) programs! From grants that support our STEAM Center programs, school-based Super Troops, and Girl Scouts Rise juvenile justice program to corporate sponsorships that enhance Signature Events across the council, our community invests in the programs that girls love. ⚬ Girls, no matter their families’ financial situation, can fully experience all that Girl Scouts offers! Over $70,000 was provided for membership financial assistance and camperships to over 2,500 girls last year – almost exclusively funded through donations. ⚬ Girls re-invest in their communities, now and in the future! An investment in girls is an investment in society. You see it when girls donate cookies to their local food bank and in the Take Action projects they plan and execute at their schools, parks and favorite community nonprofit organizations. Compared with her non-Girl Scout peers, a Girl Scout is more academically engaged and better prepared for life and future careers. As an adult, she is more likely to attain higher levels of education, own her own business or occupy an executive position, be an active voter, and volunteer.

HOW DO I INVEST? ⚬ Join the ToGetHer There Giving Society! Your $25 or greater monthly contribution sustains our programs. ⚬ Sponsor our Signature Events! Give your business exposure by partnering with the most recognizable name in girls’ leadership development in our area. ⚬ Make a one-time donation by check, phone, online or at any regional office supporting our greatest need, Camps of Excellence and campership fund, special initiatives, equestrian programs, travel opportunities and more!
