PUEBLO OF ISLETA PUBLIC SERVICES DEPARTMENT UTILITIES DIVISION When it comes to sewer service most of us put it in the back of our minds until it’s too late. Whether it is slow draining lines, a sewage backup into the home, or a routine septic pumping. When it comes to being a homeowner there are many ways you can help us here at the Utilities Division to mitigate some of the issues that may arise with your sewer system.

This time of the year we all know families come together which means extra baking, cooking, cleaning, and water use. With that being said it raises the possibility of you encountering a problem with your sewer system. Think at the sink! Avoid washing down grease, flour, coffee grounds, etc., as this can cause partial or total blockage of your drain lines. For those with a septic tank you many think an easy fix is pouring down some drano, liquid plumr, etc., but let’s avoid these chemicals as it can harm the living collection of organisms that digest and treat waste in your septic tank. Instead use boiling water, or a drain snake. Also, let’s remind our family and friends who are visiting this holiday season that the toilet is not a trash can. Flushing down items such as paper towels, feminine hygiene products, flushable wipes, etc. are all items that pose a threat to having a blockage in sewer lines. Check for leaks! Toilets, shower heads, faucets. Simple fixes such as a flapper on a toilet are the cause for unnecessary water waste. Fixing a few leaks around the home will also keep your septic tank from filling up too quickly. Keep in mind before starting that landscape idea you had in mind for next spring, please consider how it will affect the future of your sewer lines, septic tanks, clean outs, etc. Planting trees or shrubs near any of these areas will allow roots to find water and enter sewer lines. This can pose problems such as blockage, backups, slow draining lines, failed septic systems, etc. Lastly, we would like to remind you all colder temperatures are on the way. Thoroughly insulate all exposed water lines. Properly shut off your frost free hydrant after every use, detach water hose when done. Be sure to locate your exterior water isolation valve “shut off”. Take a note where it’s located, or mark to make the location known. These few precautions can help prevent frozen waterlines, cracking, breaking, also damage to your home and property. From us here at the Utilities Division we thank you for taking these helpful tips into consideration! May you all have a Blessed Holiday Season & Happy New Year! The balloons were rising at the Elementary School when the “Saki Bomber” pilot and crew shared a “Hot Air Balloon” Experience with the students and parents early on the morning of November 16th. Owners Loretta Zamora and Paul Tanouye inflated their balloon for the participants. The Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Graders were then challenged to build their own tissue versions of a balloon in the Balloon Emporium Activity. Students launched the balloons over the playground, a few which had to be rescued from the roof and trees on the school campus. Students enjoyed being on the chase crews and building their own team balloons. ( Continued Next Page ) Page 8 Isleta Pueblo News December 2017

On October 25th the Isleta Pueblo Police Department came to the library to share Halloween Safety Tips with children, patrons and families who came for our Halloween Cake Pop Program. Detective Kathleen Lucero discussed safety precautions while trick or treating and going through candy before you consume anything. She also gave them a quiz asking them to distinguish whether or not they were looking at candy or drugs. Most of the children were able to point out the suspicious candy and were well aware of checking candy in their bags. We would like to thank Detective Kathleen for taking the time to present to the children and families.

Editor: Nathaniel Lujan Asst. Editor: Tara Abeita Published By: Valencia Express Page 12 Isleta Pueblo News December 2017 Parks & Recreation Department October was a busy month for us here at the Isleta Pueblo Parks & Recreation Department. The Park Management Division continues to plug away with all their daily tasks as well as maintaining our parks system. It’s also important that I mention to all of you that they help out with some of the different events that take place here, mainly the behind the scene tasks which may go unnoticed. The Parks crew does lots of different things for the department and the POI. And it’s important that it gets mentioned. Many of the parks continue to be used on weekends and for evening activities. For those wanting to use the parks on weekends for special occasions like birthday parties, baby showers etc. we ask that you call the Recreation Center and speak to either Rochelle Zuni or Arnold Sena to reserve the park. Currently, there are no fees attached to any usage provided that we continue to clean up after ourselves when the park is utilized. Please remember, all of our facilities are drug and alcohol free zones. Thank you for your cooperation.

Halloween Carnival Update Our annual Halloween Carnival took place on October 27th, 2017 and as usual it was very well attended. This year we were able to add a Haunted House to the carnival and it seemed to be a big hit with the carnival goers. I want to thank Marvin Pohl for his help with the Haunted House. Mr. Pohl works for the City of Albuquerque and he has done some big Haunted Houses over the years at various community centers in Albuquerque. I reached out to him this year to see if he could help put one on for us here in Isleta and he was more than willing to do so. I want to give Mr. Pohl and his crew, as well as our own pool staff, for all their help with the Haunted House. All of them put in a lot of work to make this Haunted House a success. I hope we are able to have a Haunted House again next year. I want to thank all of our staff as well, putting this carnival together takes a lot of work and lots of help. My staff did a great job like always. The recreation staff and my parks crew always takes care of all the behind the scene things that sometimes go unnoticed. Like always they are responsible for the setup, getting the pumpkins to the center and setting them up, purchasing most of the prizes, the clean up afterwards and many other things that go unnoticed. I have some awesome people working for the department and they are always willing to help us out. I also want to thank all the departments that helped as well; we couldn’t do this event without their support and help. All the different departments that participate do such a great job on decorating their booths, the themes that each department picks are awesome, it makes it really hard for us to pick the winning booths year in and year out. If I left out or forgot to thank anyone or any group, please forgive me. Just keep in mind that we greatly appreciate the help of everyone that contributes to this awesome event each year. Swimming Pool Please don’t forget that our swimming pool is open to the community as well. I think that many people associate swimming with the summer months, but we here in the Isleta Community have the luxury of having an indoor swimming pool that can be used year round. We have some great staff in the pool and they are always ready to be of assistance to anyone that uses our great swimming pool. Come by and bring your family to the Isleta Recreation Center Swimming pool, we promise that you won’t regret it. Keep your eyes and ears open for December activities and events. We have a bulletin board in the recreation center that has any upcoming events posted. Stop in and check out the bulletin board or feel free to post anything that you may having that you want our community to know about. The 9th Annual Light the Path Memorial Walk will take place on Friday, December 15th, 2017, at the Isleta Recreation Center. This event is sponsored by the Isleta Community Action Team (ICAT) which is comprised of POI Service Providers/ Departments and Community Members. The event will start at 5:00 pm at the Isleta Recreation Center. The event will include a procession to St. Augustine and a memorial service. Upon conclusion a dinner will be served and a Memorial slideshow with pictures of loved ones. There will be raffling of “awesome” door prizes. Luminaries will light up the main tribal (TR 40) road and the church/plaza area.

Past event years were a huge success with luminaries lighting and guiding the procession towards the St. Augustine Church with over 250 participants in 2014, 2015 and 2016. We anticipate this number to grow larger each year. NAMES AND PHOTOS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED!! Deadline will be December 1, 2017. If emailing photos are easier for you, email to [email protected]. Luminaries may be picked up the next day after the event for your own personal use. In closing WE all have someone special that has left so many memories while they were here with us on Earth. The Pueblo of Isleta and the Rio Metro Regional Transit District are pleased to announce two new transit services now serving the Pueblo

Bus Route 208 Bus Route 208 connects the Pueblo and Valencia County communities to the Alvarado Transportation Center (ATC) in Downtown Albuquerque during the morning/midday when the Rail Runner does not operate. Route 208 features three northbound trips arriving at the ATC at 9:30am, 11:00am and 1:30pm, and three southbound trips departing the ATC at 9:35am, 11:05am and 1:32pm. At the ATC, riders can transfer to ABQ RIDE bus routes. Route 208 serves two bus stops on the Pueblo of Isleta. The stop closest to the village proper is located on NM 147 just east of the bridge. Please do not park and leave vehicles unattended on the adjoining roads near this stop, as the bus and other vehicles use these roads to turn around and access other locations. Route 208 also stops at the Isleta Pueblo Rail Runner Station, where riders can transfer to the Isleta Resort and Casino shuttle. Because the bus serves the station, riders can also consider using Route 208 in combination with the Rail Runner, for example, taking the bus to Downtown Albuquerque in the mid-morning and returning by train in the evening. Pueblo of Isleta Dial-a-Ride The Pueblo of Isleta Dial-a-Ride operates Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 2:00pm, providing trips within the Pueblo and to the ABQ RIDE Route 53 bus stop on NM 314. Limited service to WalMart in Los Lunas will also be provided on Wednesdays from 11:00am to 2:00pm. Request your Dial-a-Ride trip by calling Valencia County dispatch at (505) 352-3595 before noon at least one business day prior to your trip. Rio Metro will accept requests beginning Wednesday 11/29 for service starting Monday 12/4. Requests are accepted between 8:00am and 5:00pm. On the date and time of your trip, a wheelchair accessible van will arrive within 15 minutes of your scheduled pickup time. Trips may also be grouped together; riders should expect to travel with others.

For more information about both services, including a copy of the Route 208 schedule, visit riometro.org and select “Schedules” > “Bus” > “Pueblo of Isleta” from the grey bar near the top of the website. During the month of November we were able to host a few fun and insightful field trips. Our first trip of the month was to the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center where we visited the museum and finished with lunch at the delicious Pueblo Harvest Café. The museum was filled with insightful information on the history of the pueblos that make up New Mexico. We were able to see pictures of Isleta from many years ago. It was a great treat to hear how everyone identified the places that were in the photos and to hear their stories they told of life when they were growing up. Lunch at the Pueblo Harvest café was delicious. The food served is traditional Pueblo food with a modern twist. We highly recommend it!
