Regards, Sami El-Yousef Chief Executive Officer Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem Page 1 These Testing Times Dear Knights & Dames, I hope this newsletter finds you all well. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you as the COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak continues to impact every aspect of our daily lives. It is really difficult for all of us and especially our Ecclesiastical Knights to see our Churches closed to protect our congregations and the community at large. There are still ways to connect and grow your faith at home. The Archdiocese of Melbourne is providing us with a shortlist of online resources. This will keep us connected and inspired in our faith and will be constantly updated Please copy the link below and you will find some inspiring sites that can assist you. https:// melbournecatholic.org.au/News/grow-your-faith-at-home The website has live streaming of masses from various parishes. I would like to thank Emeritus Bishop Peter Elliott, KC*HS, our Ecclesiastical Master of Ceremonies, who has provided us with a very extensive list of prayers. We need to continue to pray for each other and the wider local and global community who are impacted by this virus. We need to remember our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land who have been impacted significantly by the virus. The Grand Magisterium has committed additional funding to support them in this difficult time. As you know from my letter earlier this month we have to postpone our EOHSJ Information Night for potential new members. Please continue to engage with potential members and please share this newsletter with them. We had to cancel our April Mass and postpone our AGM. Our next Mass is scheduled for 1 June and at this stage it is too difficult to give you an indication whether this will go ahead. As I highlighted in my letter to you earlier this month our Grand Prior, Archbishop Comensoli, KC*HS has encouraged us to get creative with the ways that we reach out to others in our community. Please take the time to reach out to each other and check how your fellow Knights and Dames are coping. On Friday night I had a great chat with Knight Max Potter. As always he was is good spirits and with his wife Val is self-isolating at home. Max was telling me about his daughter and the fact she had spent many hours that day working as a nurse in one of our hospitals. We need to pray for all the medical staff who are working with under great pressure to support our community. Archbishop Peter advises that at this time of uncertainty, the people of God in Melbourne and beyond are invited to lead the way in loving and caring for each other and for the vulnerable people in our communities (while maintaining social distancing). He reminds us that it will be our actions and our prayers that will get us through these difficult times. “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are my members of my family you did to me.” Matt 25: 40 NRSV Our Grand Prior, Archbishop Peter will be saying Sunday Mass from St Patrick’s Cathedral and it will be available online (live streaming) at 11am each Sunday while we are all unable to attend mass. If you would like to join Archbishop Peter next Sunday then please go to the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne website and go to the Mass online link. In Sunday’s homily Archbishop Peter referenced a quotation and prayer from Pope Francis. I would like to share these with you. Pope Francis said: “Now is not the time of God’s judgement, but of our judgement: a time to choose what matters and what passes away, a time to separate what is necessary from what is not.” Pope Francis offered at the end of his meditation on Friday night the following prayer and Archbishop Peter invites us to make this prayer our own : “Dear brothers and sisters, I would like this evening to entrust all of you to the Lord, through the intercession of Mary, Health of the People and Star of the stormy sea. You ask us not to be afraid. Yet our faith is weak and we are fearful. But you, Lord, will not leave us to the mercy of this storm.” I hope all of you remain safe and may God bless all of you during this challenging time. Warmest best wishes, Agnes Sheehan, DCHS Lieutenant Page 2 Relics of St Therese and Sts Louis and Zelie Martin bringing graces to Brisbane Eternal prayer: Hun- dreds of Brisbane Catholics visit the saintly family’s reli- quaries exhibited in front of the Little Flower’s round win- dow atop the left transept door at St Stephen’s Cathe- dral. It was the first time Sts Zelie’s and Louis’ relics had visited the Sunshine State and the first time in 18 years that St Therese’s had been here; the pilgrimage aligned with the recent success of Australia’s prayer campaign for rain.

  • The Holy See
The Holy See ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS JOHN PAUL II DURING THE CONSISTORY FOR THE CREATION OF FOURTEEN NEW CARDINALS Paul VI Hall 30 June 1979 Revered Brothers, We rejoice deeply that it has been granted to us to celebrate with you this Consistory, the first one since, by mysterious divine disposition, we were raised to Peter's See. It is a great event in the life of the Church. It is a question, indeed, of creating new Cardinals, who will then be part of the Sacred College, of those whom the Sovereign Pontiffs have as their main advisers and helpers in the government of the universal Church. Above all, according to the established norms, upon them falls the right and the duty to elect the Roman Pontiff, the successor of him whom Christ constituted the "lasting and visible source and foundation of the unity both of faith and of communion" (Constit. Lumen Gentium, 18). Although the number of those who are added to this College today is relatively small—as you know, there exist some limits with regard to the number of Cardinals—nevertheless also these Revered Brothers of ours, who are about to be enrolled in the Senate of the Roman Pontiff, if this term can be used, represent the universal Church in a certain way. 1. It is not without reason and significance that we have convened this chosen gathering today, at the end of the month of June. It is well known that our Predecessor, of unforgotten memory, Pope Paul VI, often gathered the Cardinals in his presence about this time and addressed very serious words to them, sometimes also for the nomination of new members of the Sacred College.

  • Former President of Australian Bishops’ Conference Dies
Former president of Australian bishops’ conference dies unexpectedly ADELAIDE, Australia (CNS) — Retired Archbishop Philip Wilson, former president of the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference who served as archbishop of Adelaide for 17 years, died Jan. 17. He was 70. The Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference said that while the archbishop had suffered a series of health problems in recent years, including cancer, his death “was unexpected.” Adelaide Archbishop Patrick O’Regan noted that while his predecessor had been charged with failing to respond adequately to allegations of child sexual abuse while a priest, he was acquitted of all charges. “A harrowing period of allegations, charges, conviction and eventually acquittal was a significant chapter on Philip’s life, but his record of supporting and advocating on behalf of victims and survivors is part of his legacy,” Archbishop O’Regan said. “Philip knew what pain many people had endured and suffered as a result of the sickening actions of some within the church. He was part of the solution, and widely recognized as such.” In July 2018, Archbishop Wilson resigned as archbishop of Adelaide Archdiocese after being convicted of failing to report allegations of child sexual abuse by a priest in the 1970s. Although he maintained his innocence and appealed the ruling, Archbishop Wilson said at the time that “there is just too much pain and distress being caused by my maintaining the office of archbishop of Adelaide, especially to the victims of Father (James) Fletcher.” In December 2018, an appeals court overturned his conviction. He served as bishop of Wollongong from 1996 to 2001, and, after his death Wollongong Bishop Brian Mascord asked for prayers “for Philip, the Wilson family and the Archdiocese of Adelaide at this very sad time.” Sydney Archbishop Anthony Fisher recalled Archbishop Wilson’s “paternal” care of the other bishops when he was president of the bishops’ conference.

  • Delegates Named for Celebration of Plenary
MEDIA RELEASE March 23, 2020 DELEGATES NAMED FOR CELEBRATION OF PLENARY COUNCIL Plenary Council president Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB has written to 266 other Catholics across the country, calling them as delegates for the Fifth Plenary Council of Australia. “At a time in our Church’s history we’ve not seen before, with the suspension of Masses in many parts of the country and around the world, the announcement of our Plenary Council delegates is a source of great joy for the People of God in Australia,” Archbishop Costelloe said. Canon law outlines those who must be called as delegates to a plenary council, including bishops, vicars general, episcopal vicars, heads of seminaries and theological institutions, and leaders of religious congregations. That amounted to 180 delegates. Canon law also allows for delegates who may be called as representatives – the total of which can’t exceed half of the total of those who must be called. The number of delegates from each local church – a diocese, eparchy, ordinariate or prelature – ranged from one to four depending on the local Catholic population. In all, 78 people have so far been confirmed, with additional representation to be named from national organisations representing education, social services, health and aged care, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic. “Bishops across the country worked locally with leaders in their diocese to design a process to consider names of people who were nominated or applied to be delegates for the Plenary Council assemblies,” Archbishop Costelloe said. “We were grateful for and impressed with the faith and the calibre of the people who were nominated.

  • Australians Begin ‘Ad Limina’ Visits Acknowledging
Australians begin ‘ad limina’ visits acknowledging impact of crisis VATICAN CITY (CNS) — The president of the Australian bishops’ conference told his fellow bishops that it is “a time of humiliation” for Catholic Church leaders, but he is convinced that God is still at work. As church leaders continue to face the reality of the clerical sexual abuse crisis and attempts to cover it up, “we as bishops have to discover anew how small we are and yet how grand is the design into which we have been drawn by the call of God and his commissioning beyond our betrayals,” said Archbishop Mark Coleridge of Brisbane, conference president. After a weeklong retreat near Rome, the bishops of Australia began their “ad limina” visits to the Vatican with Mass June 24 at the tomb of St. Peter and a long meeting with Pope Francis. The 38-member group included diocesan bishops, auxiliary bishops, the head of the ordinariate for former Anglicans and a diocesan administrator. Archbishop Coleridge was the principal celebrant and homilist for the Mass in the grotto of St. Peter’s Basilica marking the formal beginning of the visit. The “ad limina” visit is a combination pilgrimage — with Masses at the basilicas of St. Peter, St. Mary Major and St. Paul Outside the Walls — and series of meetings with Pope Francis and with the leaders of many Vatican offices to share experiences, concerns and ideas. The visits traditionally were required of bishops every five years, but with the increased number of dioceses and bishops around the world that is no longer possible.

  • On Reflection
A Word From Our State Chaplain Dear CWL Friends, “How much I desire that the year to come will be steeped in mercy, so that we can go out to every man and woman, bringing the goodness and tenderness of God! May the balm of mercy reach everyone, both believers and those far away, as a sign that the Kingdom of God is already present in our midst!” 1 So wrote Pope Francis in April when he formally announced the next Holy Year, the “Year of Mercy” which begins on 8 December 2015. We are invited to rediscover the mercy which is at the heart of our Christian faith, the divine mercy of God. Mercy is God’s constant response to the tragedy of sin: it is God’s medicine for what ails us. It is a constant call to conversion, to turn towards life and away from death. But during the Year of Mercy we are not only called to be mindful of God’s mercy towards ourselves: we are to learn what mercy is by being merciful like the Father. So that “mercy” doesn’t just become an empty platitude, we need to give it shape in our lives. How does doing mercy look in practice? I think we should look at what the Church calls the “Spiritual Works of Mercy”, by which we help people in their spiritual and emotional needs and the “Corporal Works of Mercy”, by which we help people in their physical and material needs. Are not these exactly the sorts of things that the people of the Catholic Women’s League should be doing?: The Corporal Works of Mercy feed the hungry give drink to the thirsty clothe the naked shelter the homeless visit the sick visit the imprisoned bury the dead The Spiritual Works of Mercy counsel the doubtful instruct the ignorant admonish sinners comfort the afflicted forgive offenses bear wrongs patiently pray for the living and the dead The Year of Mercy is a wonderful opportunity to receive mercy from the Father, and to be merciful ourselves.
