Tyler Perry and his rise to fame is a modern-day rags to riches story for the ages, and he’s given back countless times over to other Black creators such as himself. It was announced this week that Perry’s fortune was estimated at $1 billion, making him one of the most powerful men in show business. In a profile from Forbes , Perry, who turns 51 later this month, invited the publication on the set of his sprawling set as he directed an episode of the BET series, Sistas this past July in Atlanta. The publication mentions that Perry has earned around $1.4 billion in pretax income since 2005 and has leveraged his savvy to secure a high- profile deal with ViacomCBS that earns him $150 million annually for content development and a stake in the new BET+ streaming service. Most importantly, the piece notes that Perry owns 100 percent of the content he produces and the studio has become a lesson in film and television production in the era of COVID-19. More from Forbes : Even during the pandemic, he’s keeping it all humming. With retired and an exclusive deal with Winfrey’s OWN network expired, Perry set his sights last year on BET, which has been struggling for direction and has now practically built the BET+ streaming service around him. The network will pay Perry $150 million annually to produce a minimum of 90 episodes of new TV each year until 2025. BET, its streaming service— which hit a million subscribers in August—and other Viacom properties get exclusive rights to air those shows for five years, as well as the reruns of his House of Payne, and For Better or Worse, plus some of his early stage work, which Cary is beginning to exploit. After that half-decade, the rights to all those BET-funded shows revert to Perry. The first two—The Oval and Sistas—became BET’s two top-rated programs in their first seasons. The best part? “I don’t have a noncompete,” Perry says, which means still more projects, such as A Fall From Grace, which debuted in January on Netflix to terrible reviews—and 26 million streams in its first week. He also plans to start financing productions from other Black creators whom Hollywood has overlooked. Matthew Perry quits celeb video app Cameo after concern for his slurred speech. "Explosive Diarrhea" Shuts Down Production on NBC's 'Ultimate Slip 'N Slide' Game shows with physical challenges usually make the challenges large in scale. But we’ve never seen a show where the physical challenges are tiny, but just as difficult. That’s what we get with Small Fortune . Can tiny play well on TV? SMALL FORTUNE : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT? Opening Shot: Scenes from the first season of Small Fortune , where the announcer talks about contestants facing the biggest challenges of their lives “on the teeniest, tiniest games ever seen on TV.” The Gist: Small Fortune is based on a British game show that ran on ITV for one season in 2019. In this version, Lil Rel Howery is the host, and one team of three plays for the entire hour. The challenge is to complete five tasks on five different tiny dioramas built for the show; each task helps the team build their bank, up to $250,000. The dioramas are models of The Oval Office, where a contestant has to flick some tiny papers into a tiny garbage can, or a supermarket, where the contestant needs to stack two sets of fallen soda cans, using tweezers, in 30 seconds. In a wedding diorama, the contestant needs to take a tiny tablecloth off a table without toppling over what’s on top of it. In another challenge, the contestant has to put a tiny flag on a target on a model of the moon — while blindfolded. In the final task, the contestant needs to deposit three of five “gold” nuggets onto a moving model train. Each round has an escalating pot available. In each round, the designated contestant gets a free practice shot. If they need more, it’ll cost one-fifth of the available pot. Whatever money they’ve banked gets locked away in “Lil Rel’s Fargo”, a miniature bank. Yes, that’s the bonus round, called the “Big Little Heist”. Each contestant has to complete a particular task — put in three tiny pass cards, flick three mini bunches of TNT onto the safe to “blow” it open, then balancing tiny stacks of cash on a platform dangled by a model helicopter. Finish those tasks in 2 minutes, and the team wins the banked money. Photo: Trae Patton/NBC. What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Small Fortune reminds us of other game shows with physical challenges, like Beat The Clock , Double Dare , or Holey Moley , but on a much, much smaller scale. Our Take: Like most new primetime game shows, Small Fortune suffers a bit from a pacing problem. Howery keeps things moving and loose, and he pokes just enough fun at the contestants to help allay their nervousness. But the practices are so lacking in tension that they slow the game action down. When you’re doing these games where you build a bank that will be won during the final round, the game play has to be relatively action-packed, because there isn’t any money actually being won in that moment, just potential money. So when producers slow things down, it makes things a bit anticlimactic. We love the craftsmanship of the dioramas in each round, and we enjoy not only the cheekiness of Howery but the names of the games and the announcer, as well. But watching multiple practices, each of which cost the contestants potential money in their bank, isn’t what we were expecting from this game. The decision to practice, even if it loses money, isn’t that fraught, at least in the episode we saw; the contestants pretty easily weigh the risk-reward equation and there isn’t much tension there. We’d rather just see a single practice, but then they’d have to put in more games to fill the time. There are a lot of fun elements to Small Fortune , and if the producers pick up the pace a bit, it has the potential to be a really entertaining hour. Parting Shot: If we told you if the contestants won or lost, we’d spoil it for you, wouldn’t we? Sleeper Star: This has to go to the show’s design team, because the dioramas are pretty detailed and have little extras in them to show that they’re in on the joke. Most Pilot-y Line: Again, we’re not fans of the practices, even if the contestants sacrifice money for the bank in order to practice more. Our Call: STREAM IT. Small Fortune has a fun format and Howery makes for a fine host. If the producers can tighten the show’s pacing in subsequent episodes, it should make for a fun summer series. Grab your best cup of tea and get ready to swoon all over again because Downton Abbe y is now on Netflix! The hit Masterpiece on PBS drama was one of the defining pop cultural moments of the early ’10s and became one of the first major binge-worthy shows to land on Netflix in the streamer’s early years. However, for the past few years, Downton Abbey has been missing from Netflix. The show has popped up on Prime Video, PBS Passport, BritBox, and finally Peacock, but Downton Abbey has never been back on Netflix. Until now. Downton Abbey snuck onto Netflix with the June 2021 new releases which means you now have a brand new period drama to revisit or binge for the very first time… Created by Gosford Park alum Julian Fellows, Downton Abbey told the “upstairs, downstairs” story of nobles and servants living at a fictional great house called Downton Abbey in the early 20th century. The story kicks off with the sinking of the Titanic. The kindly Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville)’s last male relatives died on board, meaning there is tension over who will inherit the land, titles, and fortune tied to Downton Abbey. The law says everything must go to a middle class distant cousin, Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens). However the Earl’s American heiress wife, Lady Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) and his mother, the intimidating Countess of Grantham (Maggie Smith), want Cora’s family funds and some part of Downton to go to eldest daughter, Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery). The thing about Downton Abbey is it managed to make what sounds like a very fussy period drama feel like a vibrant, sexy, and classy soap opera. The show subverted expectations, flinging a handsome Turkish diplomat (played by Sanditon ‘s Theo James) at Mary in Episode 3, and by building as much interest in the daily lives of the servants downstairs as the glamorous folks upstairs. The show flirted with progressive issues all while delivering a fairy tale vision of the past. Downton Abbey paved the way for a new era of period drama, one unfettered from tradition. So much so you can trace a path from Downton Abbey ‘s success to Bridgerton ‘s recent moment in the sun. So Downton Abbey ‘s return to Netflix is a really big deal. Remember in Season 2 when Cousin Matthew showed up at the great house to join a lovelorn Lady Mary in song? Well, that’s how we feel right now upon discovering that Downton Abbey is back on Netflix. And if you don’t know what we’re talking about, you better get binging now.
