Please sign up ahead of time so we can plan for the number attending, or call us at: 541-488-5342. Hope you can join us! Christmas Carols in French Wed., Dec. 7 at 12:45 p.m. A group from OLLI at SOU will perform the French Christmas carols that they have been practicing. They will sing many of the old favorites, including... Silent Night, Jingle Bells and many more in French. The audience can hum along with the tunes and, for those who can read and pronounce French, they will have a few extra copies of lyrics. Everyone is invited to sing the warm-up song Frere Jacques: “Frere Jacques, Dormez-vous? Sonnez les matines. Ding, dang, dong.” Come join in the Holiday fun! Heartfelt thanks to Ashland Fire and Rescue for the delicious 8th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner for our Ashland Seniors! Hats off to you all! Gratitude Go ahead—make my day! I believe in affirmation. I think people do not get enough of it. It’s as simple as a meaningfully stated “thank you” or a tender smile at someone who looks a little blue. It’s an authentic “Well done” or a personalized “Good job.” Perhaps you offer simple words of gratitude when someone unexpectedly holds the door open as you enter a building. I still think back on—years ago I believe‐‐when a small boy, who could not have been more than six or seven years old, held open a heavy door for me. My genuine gratitude prompted a sweet, lilting laugh from him—as well as from his proud mom standing nearby. I still feel good about that exchange years later Affirmation given, affirmation received—and then returned yet again. See how simple this can be? Maybe you already do it well. Maybe you reliably say “thank you“ when a friend compliments you on your new haircut or your husband does the dishes after a dinner party. Or maybe you exude an anony‐ mous air‐sent “thank you” when your computer does not crash after you get a virus warning—or the toast does not burn even though the setting encouraged exactly that. If you in fact do have a computer virus or the toast burns to a crisp, there may be other words you use—but, for now, let’s stay with a positive outcomes and the more gracious approach. By the way‐‐if you’re the recipient of a simple ‘thank you” there’s no need to discount the affirmation— “You are very welcome” will suffice. Maybe emphasize the “very” just a little? I looked up the research on the power of a simple thank you. There has not been as much study as the topic deserves. But there was evidence to suggest that positive and optimistic expectations lead to better health. A Duke University Medical Center study involving over 2,000 patients found that the optimistic folks were 30% less likely to die over the 15 years following their cardiac surgery. Now that’s definitely something to be thankful for. It might even deserve an outright hallelujah. Another way to look at gratitude involves the ‘Count your blessings theory.” As illustration, “Having problems at work?” Be grateful you have work. Or be grateful for challenges and problems—because at least then life is not boring. I’m getting a little circular here I know, Thank you for not calling it to my attention too harshly. Here is one more notable illustration on the power of gratitude. It’s drawn from a 2013 Harvard‐ affiliated study asking students to critique one another’s writing by using (or not using) affirmations. The assessed measurement of self‐worth in students who were given a tersely non‐affirming critique plummeted as compared to those who were given some acknowledgement in the critique provided. The students given built‐in affirmation not only had a heightened sense of self‐worth but the affirming feedback triggered more broad‐based thoughtful, helpful behaviors toward others. I think of that as circular in the best sense. Researchers call it “the gratitude effect” Go ahead—start it moving in your household or your neigh‐ borhood. Thank you. Very. Much. Sharon Johnson M.S. • Raoul Walsh to Attend Opening of Retrospective Tribute at Museum
The Museum of Modern Art jl west 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart NO. 34 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RAOUL WALSH TO ATTEND OPENING OF RETROSPECTIVE TRIBUTE AT MUSEUM Raoul Walsh, 87-year-old film director whose career in motion pictures spanned more than five decades, will come to New York for the opening of a three-month retrospective of his films beginning Thursday, April 18, at The Museum of Modern Art. In a rare public appearance Mr. Walsh will attend the 8 pm screening of "Gentleman Jim," his 1942 film in which Errol Flynn portrays the boxing champion James J. Corbett. One of the giants of American filmdom, Walsh has worked in all genres — Westerns, gangster films, war pictures, adventure films, musicals — and with many of Hollywood's greatest stars — Victor McLaglen, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fair banks, Mae West, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Edward G. Robinson, to name just a few. It is ultimately as a director of action pictures that Walsh is best known and a growing body of critical opinion places him in the front rank with directors like Ford, Hawks, Curtiz and Wellman. Richard Schickel has called him "one of the best action directors...we've ever had" and British film critic Julian Fox has written: "Raoul Walsh, more than any other legendary figure from Hollywood's golden past, has truly lived up to the early cinema's reputation for 'action all the way'...." Walsh's penchant for action is not surprising considering he began his career more than 60 years ago as a stunt-rider in early "westerns" filmed in the New Jersey hills.

  • And What It Means
WASHINGTON ( AP)--Henry A. Kissinger said yesterday Hanoi has balked at President Nixo n's Vietnam peace proposals, presented in a nationwide ele- vision speech Tuesday night, on two counts: the fine print on blueprints for a U.S. wit idrawal and the election of a new Saigon government. Kissinger, w ho was Nixon's clandestine go-between in 12 just-disclosed H IXOH S secret Paris c conferences with key figures from Hanoi, said at a rare news conference he still hopes for a negotiating breakthrough. He called th e Presidents eight-point proposal a flexible one, not a take-it-or-leal ve-it proposition. The Presiden t's far-travelled assistant for national security affairs said Nixon, by publicizing 26 months of secret negotiations in an address peaceto the nation, may spur North Vietnam to resume talks "on a more urgent basis.", Nixon unfold ed a peace offer that includes an Indochina cease-fire, withdrawal of American forces and release of war pris- oners, new elections in South Vietnam with the Viet Cong participating, and resignation of the Saigon government a month before the internationally supervised balloting. proposal. Under the Nixon plan, all these developments would take place within six months of a Washington-Hanoi agreement. The basics of the proposal have ie an in 7hanni's hands since Octoberr, Nixon said, bu t Hanoi has given no response. Radio Hanoi, in a quick response to Nixon's address, said it contained nothing new an d insisted that the U.S. position was "not changed in any way." But the broadcast stopped short of rejecting the Chief Executive's proposals.

SCARY MOVIES Fright—in all of its forms—has always been an essential part of the moviegoing experience. No wonder directors have figured out so many ways to horrify an audience.
