Critters on Parade

Congratulations CHBC…we did it again! For the fourth year in a row, we made kids smile. Kids of all ages. Even the grown-up ones. And isn’t that what this project is all about? While we didn’t quite reach out , we still managed to make about as many as we did last year, ending up with 230 cuddly critters to deliver. Thanks to all of our volunteers who came out to stuff, fluff and dress the fuzzy bundles and thanks also to Erin and Alyse of the Storm Squad for coming to support us and make their contributions to our total. They wandered the mall carrying pre-made critters and came back with pockets full of donations to our cause. Thank you, ladies. We couldn’t have done it without you.

We delivered 50 bears to NC Children’s Hospital on Sunday, March 9th and, as always, they were happy to have us there. Since they had extra help this year, they took us room to room, which was a treat to us as well as Shannon and Ashley from the Storm Squad who split their time between the Atrium Playroom and the room to room deliveries. Both young ladies were moved, as Tammy Sofield and I were, by these kids who were so happy to have their new best bud- dies and to know that someone thought enough and cared enough to make something so special for a perfect stranger. 160 critters were delivered to Duke Children’s Hospital and while we couldn’t actually go up onto the ward (they had it locked down for the flu) they were simply gushing over the number of Build-A-Bear boxes we delivered on Tuesday, March 11th. And we’ve been invited back for a group tour of the hospital anytime. They also stated that they are look- ing forward to working with us next year (hint, hint). Our final 20 bears will be delivered to Rex and Wake Med as soon as can be arranged so be on the lookout for requests for volunteers Again, thank you CHBC for all you’ve done to keep this project alive. We’ll see you next year! Page 4 Hurricane Warning

Hurricanes Blow into Nashville

By Dianna McKenzie

Ok – so it’s time to make a road trip and see my Carolina Hurricanes play an away game. What a better way than coordinate it with one of my best friends on her birthday? My Carolina Hurricanes played the Nashville Predators on February 5th, on my friend’s birthday. She lives in Chattanooga TN, so it’s an easy trip for her and a much longer one for me. But how can I say no, she bought the tickets.

So, off we go to have a great time. The day of the game started like any other, we were off to view the morning skate, loads of fun since there were only about 6 other people in attendance. Next, went outside to get autographs from the players. My friend had a great time, she never gets to see the players and we got to see almost all of them. We said a few words to each of the players; some posed for pictures and my friend was on cloud nine as they all wished her a happy birthday and signed her hat. Gee, what could get better than that?

After taking in the sights and sounds of Nashville all afternoon, we took a cab from our hotel to the arena for the big game. The game itself was pretty good, with the exception of the final score and Chad LaRose breaking his leg at the start of the game. YES, we heard him scream from our seats. The interesting part came at the end of the game.

Big storms came into the area with the threat of tornadoes. Towards the end of the game, announcements were made for everyone to stay in their seats until more information could be obtained about the weather conditions outside. We were told that the arena was the safest place to be and that bad weather was coming into the area. When the game ended a few minutes later, another announcement was given that no one would be able to leave the arena due to the tornado warnings outside and that there would be an official “all clear” given when it was safe. Another couple minutes passed and everyone was told that we had to vacate the center arena seats and head towards the underground tunnels. I had no idea what was in store, but like everyone else, my friend and I got up and headed toward the tunnel entrance.

The Nashville arena is located in the heart of downtown. Most buildings in the area have a glass façade and the arena itself has walls of glass. The thought of a tornado hitting the downtown area and the glass flying was something I have never had to think about at a hockey game. Usually, I just think about the game and hope we win.

I never made it to the official tunnels, as my friend is VERY claustrophobic, and the idea of her going into a confined space with 10,000 other people was something I did not want to do. So, we hung out near the tunnel entrance, near a police gathering and watched the TV’s as the storm raged outside. It was at least 30-45 minutes before an “all clear” was given and we could actually leave. What felt like an eternity was finally over. Watching the storm through the windows of the arena and seeing the effect it was taking on the downtown area, hearing the fear in people’s voices as they watched the TV and saw the path of the storm was overhead and then trying to keep my friend calm as her claustrophobia was kicking in, it was all very surreal. So, how did the eve- ning end? We walking across the street to an open bar and got a drink!
