St. Dominic, the founder of the Dominicans, was born in Caleruega, Spain in 1170 to Felix Guzman and Bl. Joan of Aza. As members of the Spanish nobility, Dominic was blessed with great material wealth. However, after a famine raged throughout Spain and left many homeless, Dominic sold everything he had and used that money to buy food and clothes for the poor. His empathy for those less fortunate even prompted an attempt to sell himself into slavery to obtain the freedom of others.

In 1194 Dominic joined a Benedictine order and became prior of the chapter in 1201. In 1203 he joined Bishop Diego de Acebo on a trip to Denmark to find a bride for Crown Prince Ferdinand. They were unsuccessful, and therefore decided to travel to Rome where Pope Innocent III asked them to go to southern France. Here Dominic worked tirelessly to convert heretics, par- ticularly the Albigensians who believed that all material things, including the human body, were fundamentally evil.

Legend has it that in 1214, while praying at an abbey in Prouille, Dominic had a vision of the Blessed Mother who instructed him to use the rosary to aid in his conversion attempts. While devotions similar to the rosary had been around for some time, this is the first record of the Marian rosary.

While Dominic refused being promoted to bishop, he did feel dedicated to promoting morality and the expulsion of heresy. In 1215, he was granted permission to form his own religious order for this purpose. The “Dominicans,” as they were later called, began with Dominic and six followers who were dubbed by Pope Honorius III “The Order of Preachers”. Dominic continued his mission for many years, but passed away in 1221 after contracting a fever and falling ill. His remains are currently held in a shrine in Bologna, Italy.

To grow your appreciation for the rosary even more, be sure to check out Dr. Edward Sri's audio talk on Formed entitled “Praying the Rosary Like Never Before”!

SAINTS IN TRAINING Formation for young children learning the Faith to become saints Saint Dominic Can you find the seven differences between the two pictures? Dominic de Guzmán was born in Spain in 1170, and stud- ied arts and theology in the university. In 1208, he was traveling through France with the local bishop when he encountered false teachings, or heresy. The locals were teaching that there is one good, one evil—in the world. All matter is evil—denying that Jesus was born a human, and they denied the Sacraments. Dominic wanted to preach the Gospel to make sure people understood the truth.

In 1215, Dominic started a religious house of preachers to spread the Gospel correctly. His order differed from most religious orders, as they performed missionary work rather than lived cloistered lives praying and working. They were known as mendicant friars.

St. Dominic was the first to preach and teach the Rosary as St. Dominic de Guzmán a form of meditative prayer, and the first to see the benefits 1170-1221 reaped from meditation upon its mysteries. SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, November 10: St. Andrew Avellino—Priest St. Andrew was born in Castonuevo, Italy in 1521. After an extensive education, he was ordained and re- ceived a doctorate in law. He served on an ecclesiastical court, but resigned his position when he found him- self resorting to lying to win his legal arguments. The archbishop asked Andrew to reform a community of nuns, which led him to being attacked by a group opposed to these reforms. Andrew was taken to a Theatine monastery to recover. He joined the Theatines himself in 1566, founded various monasteries, and served as superior. He was known to have spent many hours in the confessional and worked miracles. He passed away at the foot of the altar during Mass while saying "I will go unto the altar of God."

Monday, November 11: St. Theodore—Abbot St. Theodore was born in Constantinople in 758. He was the nephew of St. Pluto, who served as abbot of a monastery in Saccudium. He studied at the monastery under Pluto and became a monk there in 780. In 794, he succeeded his uncle as abbot. Theodore frequently found himself challenging those in power. He op- posed the emperor, Constantine VI, for an adulterous marriage and was exiled until 797. He was exiled again in 809 by Nicephorus I, but returned in 811. Theodore opposed the iconoclasm of Emperor Leo V and was subjected to torture before being exiled a third time. In 820, Emperor Michael II invited Theodore to return to Constantinople. He spent his remaining six years in the city. Tuesday, November 12: St. Nilus—Bishop St. Nilus was born sometime in the 300s. He served as a member of the royal court in Con- stantinople. While serving in this role, he studied under St. John Chrysostom. At the saint’s encouragement, Nilus and his son left behind their family and lived as monks on Mount Sinai. His son was kidnapped and sold into slavery. Nilus located him, and the two were ordained priests by the Bishop of Eleusa. He was later appointed Bishop of Ancyra. Nilus was a widely -respected theologian who composed numerous works on the Faith and counseled emperors. Wednesday, November 13: St. Stanislaus Kostka—Confessor St. Stanislaus was the son of a Polish senator born on October 28, 1550 in Rostkovo, Poland. He attended a Jesuit college in Vienna for his education. While there, he became seriously ill. Stanislaus had a vision of St. Barbara with two angels. He then had a vision of Our Lady, who told him he would be healed and become a Jesuit. After recovering from the illness, he decided to join the Society of Jesus. His father strongly opposed this decision and had his oldest son, Paul, try to pressure and lure Stanislaus away from this path. Stanislaus traveled great distances to escape his father and brother, and was accepted into the order by St. Peter Canisius. Only nine months into his Jesuit novitiate, he came down with another illness and passed away on August 15, 1568 at the age of 17. Thursday, November 14: St. Lawrence O'Toole—Bishop St. Lawrence was born in Kildare, Ireland around the year 1128. When he was only ten years old, Lawrence was taken hostage by Mac Murehad, the King of Leinster, who mistreated the child. At his father’s plead- ing, Lawrence was handed over to the Bishop of . When the bishop passed away in 1150, Law- rence was named abbot of the monastery that the bishop was administering. In 1161, Lawrence was chosen to become the first . In 1171, he went to visit King Henry II of England. While cele- brating Mass, he was brutally attacked. Lawrence asked for some water, blessed it, and was healed of his bleeding after touching the water to his wounds. Friday, November 15: St. Leopold—Confessor St. Leopold was born into a military family in Melk, Austria in 1073. During his youth he received his education from Bishop Altman of Passau. Upon the death of his father, he succeeded his father in the role of military governor. In 1106, he married the daughter of Henry IV, with whom he had 18 chil- dren. Leopold was asked to become emperor in 1125 following the death of his brother-in-law, but he turned down this honor. Leopold used his wealth and influence to support the . He founded three monasteries and was named “Leopold the Good” by the people of Austria. Saturday, November 16: St. Margaret of Scotland—Widow St. Margaret was an English princess born in Hungary in 1046 to Prince Edward who was living there in exile. When her father was called back to England, she went with him. However, her father quickly died, and she moved to Scotland. At the encouragement of her mother, she married the king of Scotland, Malcom III, in 1069. Margaret was able to soften her husband’s temper, and the couple grew in holiness regularly praying together and feeding the hungry. Margaret offered food for approximately 300 people each day, and she washed the feet and kissed the wounds of the poor. She spent much of her time in prayer and practiced mortifications. INTERESTEDINTERESTED ININ BECOMIBECOMINGNG AA MEMBERMEMBER OFOF THE CATHEDRAL OF SAINT PATRICK? Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. A person becomes a member of the Catholic Church through Baptism. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Confor- mation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain mini- mum requirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how the Cathedral of Saint Patrick looks upon them in relation to parish membership.

 ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eucharistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Res- urrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Since the Cathedral’s weekly Mass attendance envelopes are the primary way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, pa- rishioners must place their envelopes in the collection basket every Sunday regardless of whether one makes a financial contribution. If a parishioner gives online or prefers to place cash in the offertory basket, an empty Mass attendance envelope should still be placed in the basket with "I attended Mass" checked.  RECEIPT OF THE SACRAMENTS. The third & fourth precept of the Church states the faithful must ensure preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation at least once a year, and the re- ception of Holy Communion at least once a year during the Easter season (CCC #2042) and join in fast and abstinence during Lent.  SUPPORT OF THE CHURCH. The fifth precept of the Church states that the faithful have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to their abilities in a regular, identifiable and meaningful way.

Remembering Those Who Have Gone Before Us All Souls Day Remembrances for the month of November

Daily Mass Remembrance During all Masses in November, the Cathedral of Saint Patrick will lift in prayer those who have gone before us in death. To have your loved ones remembered at these Masses, we welcome you to complete an “All Souls Day Remembrance” envelope and place it in the Sunday collection basket or in the donation boxes by the rectory side entrance and narthex. The names of those written on the envelope will be silently remembered by the priest offering Mass each day. These envelopes are avail- able on the tables in the Cathedral, in the pews, and in all parishioner offertory envelope sets.

Purple Candles To have your loved one remembered with a can- dle, please complete a “Remembering our Beloved De- ceased” envelope located in the front of the Cathe- dral near the Our Lady of Sorrows statue. Place the completed envelope with your donation in the petition slot of the candle stand. Fr. Roux will bless and light a purple candle in memory of your deceased loved one.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
