State of Affairs in Europe
State of affairs in Europe Workshop of Transform and Rosa Luxem- burg Foundation, July 7- 9 2016 Franz-Mehring-Platz 1, 10243 Berlin Documentation Cornelia Hildebrandt/Luci Wagner 30.07.2017 DOCUMENTATION: BERLIN SEMINAR 2016 2 Introduction This documentation is produced as a material outcome of the two days workshop that was organised by transform! Europe and the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation on 7 - July 2019 in Berlin under the title “State of affairs in Europe”. This European seminar aimed to bring together left-wing political actors and scholars to debate the possibilities of common perspectives and political action of the Left in Europe. When the preparation process of this seminar started the political landscape was of course different. Against the backdrop of blackmail of SYRIZA government in the nego- tiations with the institutions , further cuts to pensions and social benefits make the mass protests against these measures as against the implementation of the privatization, the continuation of neoliberal politics, the alarming soar of the far right in numerous coun- tries, but also the introduction of a progressive government in Portugal with the support of the left parties , the electoral success of Unidos Podemos in Spain etc., we believed that a new determination of the positioning of the Left is necessary. This is still our be- lief, despite the crucial and controversial developments that took place in Europe during 2017. In 2016 a respectable number of conferences, seminars and debates had been taken place (especially the foundation and conferences of DiEM-25, the conference ‘Building alliances to Fight Austerity and to Reclaim Democracy’ in Athens organized by trans- form!, the Party of the European Left and Nicos Poulantzas Institute, the “Plan B” - con- ferences and the strategy conference of the RLS). -

This paper aims to analyse the documentary series I Am Africa. Consisting of ten episodes, I Am Africa gives voice to ten citizens ± two from each of the Portuguese-speaking African countries: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and Sao Tome and Principe ± with significant civic involvement in the development of the nations where they were born and currently live. Through thematic analysis of the ten stories, which make up the documentary series, were located the predominant themes in the narratives of those involved. The results of this research show the narrative organization of the ten interviewees in three central themes: the meanings of independence, which involve the representations of the people who have participated in the process of (de)colonization; -
The Fall of the Berlin Wall 26 Years Later: the State of the Left in Portugal, 2015-2016
The fall of the Berlin Wall 26 years later: The state of the left in Portugal, 2015-2016 André Freire1 & Marco Lisi2 (2016), «The fall of the Berlin Wall 26 years later: the state of the left in Portugal, 2015-2016», European Integration and the left between national orientation and European cooperation, volume organized by Cornelia Hildebrandt, Berlin, Rosa Luxemburg Foundation – Transform, pp. ??. Introduction The global and economic crisis has had potential disturbing consequences for democratic political systems, especially in Southern Europe, an area characterized by a growing electoral volatility, significant party system change, the emergence of new political parties, the mobilisation of new social movements, increasing governmental instability and a decrease in satisfaction towards democracy (Bermeo and Bartels 2014; Freire et al. 2015; Matthijs 2014; Freire, Lisi and Viegas 2015; Freire and Lisi, 2016c). While these challenges have led to a deep crisis of social-democratic parties, the effect of economic turmoil on radical left parties (RLPs)3 is still unclear. First, because this international crisis and the European sovereign debt crisis have revealed the failure of neoliberal ideas and policies (the Washington consensus, hyper globalisation, the huge reduction of state functions, deregulation of financial and other markets, etc.), as well as the institutional problems with EU economic and monetary integration (Blyth 2012; Rodrik 2012). Second, because the Socialist / Social-democrat party family, namely in the EU, has converged with many of these orientations and policies, contrary to RLPs that have always fought them. Third, because the implementation of the austerity packages in the different countries, but especially in Greece and Portugal, have had devastating 1 Associate Professor with Habilitation / Aggregatión in Political Science at the Lisbon University Institute (ISCTE-IUL), Portugal, and Senior Researcher at CIES-IUL (Centre for Sociological Studies and Research). -

Professor Adriano Moreira
