Of mixed settler/Inuvialuit heritage, Ingniq often creates work that reflects both aspects of her cultural identity as well as broader social issues related to Indigenous people today. Often working with reclaimed or rescued materials in her art- making, Ingniq takes an intuitive and mindful approach to art. In part, this is a reactionary, conscious choice regarding the amount of rampant waste in this capitalist/consumerist society, as well as a symbolic gesture adding to the reclamation of identity. The need to create work like this is to focus on evolving activism that seeks to generate dialogue and awareness about the current and historical aspects influencing Indigenous people, as well as other groups of marginalized individuals and problems to generate opportunities for more inclusive and supportive societies.

GUIDE TO GALLERIES + MUSEUMS ALBERTA BRITISH COLUMBIA WASHINGTON OREGON April - May 2020 preview-art.com Halin de Repentigny, Last Burst of Light, 2019 Photo: Susan Stanley. Courtesy of Madrona Gallery. Dear Readers, Thank you for your continued support of the arts in the Pacific Northwest. For over 30 years, Preview has helped art and museum aficionados connect with artists’ works and featured exhibitions in Alberta, BC, Washington and Oregon. Since it is vital to continue to support the arts during the COVID-19 crisis, we have published our April-May issue online. Galleries and museums have responded to the situation by temporarily closing their doors and postponing events, while our leading visual arts writers have continued to contribute their insightful reviews of exhibitions and programs. We at Preview have done our best to provide accurate information at the time of publishing; however, I strongly suggest you visit venue websites for updated schedules. This issue is an important beacon for the visual arts. We appreciate that no virtual experience can equal a personal visit to a gallery, museum or artist’s studio. But until such visits are again possible, Preview can guide your search for art that inspires you at this time of self-isolation. I should also mention that our magazine functions not only as a gallery guide and cultural advocate in the Pacific Northwest; since 1986, it has been recognized by Library and Archives Canada as “a historical record of art produced in this area. Public and museum libraries collect and retain copies of Preview for their permanent archives.” The arts on both sides of the border need our support now more than ever.

Vancouver artist Eric Metcalfe will lecture in Architecture and Design Now Date: Monday, January 8, 2007 - 11:00am - 2:00pm Location: C 610 "Eric Metcalfe's Long-standing practice in performance, video, installation, ceramics and sculpture has consistently drawn from popular culture, including film and television, jazz improvisation and the graphic novel. In his talk titled "Film Noir Architecture", Metcalfe looks in detail at film noir, a genre of great importance to film and cultural theorists over the past three decades. His talk will centre around the the installation "Laura" currently on at the Stride Gallery in Calgary. Centred around a 'missing woman', the Vera Casprey novel Laura of 1942 and the 1944 Otto Preminger film adaptation exemplify the classic motifs of crime fiction and film noir. In this installation, Metcalfe takes on the role of 'auteur', a continuation of his 'oeuvre' that includes the 1980 video Steel and Flesh. He collaborates with writer Nancy Shaw, and editor Michael Turner in the voice-over script for the sound track, in which Shaw performs; renowned jazz pianist Paul Plimley and sound artist Peter Courtemanche collaborate on the score. Ceramicist Gillian McMillan and sculptor Rick Ross work with Metcalfe in the design of the set pieces for a remarkable installation that transforms the gallery space into a sound stage that the viewer can enter. Paring down to a few significant elements the lush opulence of the film noir set, and including vintage lighting, draperies and 'painting', Metcalfe investigates the strong influence of this popular genre on both contemporary art practice and his own artistic development.

Mittenism and the Quest for Empathy Etching and Lithography Prints by Rita McKeough Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program Front: Rita McKeough, Cookie Cookie in the Night, 1981 “For my MFA exhibition in 1979 at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, I exhibited my prints in an installation of a cast concrete roadway and sidewalk. I wrote a Manifesto to accompany the exhibition, which was entitled the Manifesto of Mittenism. It was bound with handmade paper and printed from hand set type and offset lithography plates at the NSCAD print shop. It was a statement about my work in the form of a poetic manifesto using humour and a metaphor of mittens vs. gloves as a strategy to position my work within the context of NSCAD and my perceived sense of the art world at the time. The Manifesto of Mittenism print is a depiction of me promoting Mittenism as a philosophy of art and life on a soapbox on a street corner and the only listeners I could attract were a group of enthusiastic mittens. The print is a lithograph printed from multiple aluminum plates with hand colouring on the mittens. The image of me is printed on a photo litho print.” RM Above: Manifesto of Mittenism, 1981, collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts 1 Table of Contents 3 About the Esplanade 4 About the AFA Travelling Exhibition Program 6 Curatorial Statement 8 Biography 10 Artist Statement 11 Visual Inventory - List of Works 16 Introduction to Educators' Guide and Lesson Plans 17 Lesson 1: Still Life Block Printing Project 19 Lesson 2: Turn an Everyday Object into a Photo Comic-Strip 21 Write a Letter to Someone Who Needs It: Practicing Empathy 24 Acknowledgments 2 About the Esplanade The Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre is where the stories of our great collective culture are told through music and dance, painting and sculpture, plays and concerts, exhibitions and installations, artifacts and art, education programs and private events.
