Great for a volunteer activity. Construction Advisory for I-15 Express Lanes Night Closures

Please be advised that for approximately two months, beginning in February, construction activity in the median of Interstate 15 (I-15) between Mira Mesa Boulevard and Carroll Canyon Road will require intermittent night closures of the Express Lanes (Sunday nights through Friday mornings) from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. The I-15 main lanes will remain open and signs will be posted on the freeway in advance of each closure to notify motorists where to exit and re-enter the Express Lanes. These closures will allow crews to continue construction of the Mira Mesa Direct Access Ramp (DAR).

The Mira Mesa DAR along with the new Miramar College Transit Station, which is also under construction, will link to the I-15 Ex- press Lanes via Hillery Drive. This will be the fifth DAR constructed along the I-15 Corridor and will support future Rapid Transit service later this year. Construction of the DAR and transit station is scheduled to be complete in summer 2014. More Info: MMTC website> http://www.miramesatowncouncil.org/ Hillery_DAR_Page.htm Volume 40, Issue 4 Page 5

Five Ideas for Water Conservation in the Home Garden

California is in the midst of a drought emergency, and there’s no relief in sight as our unseasonably warm winter continues. Gov. Jerry Brown is asking all residents to cut water use by 20 percent — something that may be easier than you think. San Diegans have already begun conserving water use and therefore San Diego’s water conditions are not as dire as that of Central and Northern . How- ever, since we don’t know what the future holds, there may be more we can do. Below are several gardening ideas for even more conser- vation efforts. Create an Irrigation Zone Plants need water to survive, but with little rainfall, most of us rely on sprinklers to do the job. Because some plants need more water than others, learning how to zone your garden can help minimize wasteful water. Boost Moisture with Mulch Mulch is critical in saving water in any home garden. Find out how mulch is produced and where San Diego County residents can pick up mulch— for free or at low cost! www.sandiego.gov/environmental-services/miramar/greenery/cmw.shtml Try a Mediterranean Makeover Mediterranean plants can turn a thirsty lawn into a beautiful (and drought-resistant!) garden. Check out the ‘how to’ videos for adding Native Plants or a Mediterranean Garden http://www.countynewscenter.com/video/down-to-earth?v=153494 How to Plant a Native Garden Non-native plants are thirsty. Create a beautiful garden that cuts down on water use and maintenance by planting native plants are inher- ently suited to our San Diego climate. The Water Conservation Garden: The Water-Saving Mecca Take a visit to Cuyamaca College’s water-wise garden in El Cajon. Learn about expert gardening advice like “xeriscaping” that can save a considerable amount of water. There are classes, special events for kids and a large variety of plants for sale at very reasonable prices. May 3, 2014 marks the 52nd Anniversary of the FREEDOM RIDES

The MMTC President’s message is filled with the ‘hope’ and sense of ’community’ we enjoy in Mira Mesa today. The MMTC is helping to host a public forum for a very diverse set of candidates for public office. It is only befitting we look back to how some of the ‘freedoms’ and the rights we tend to take for granted had to be fought for in order for us to enjoy them today. Included is an excerpt from a Presidential Proclamation written by President Barack Obama dated May 2011…

Fifty years ago, America was struggling to implement the ideals of justice and equality set forth by our founding government. The Freedom Rides, organized in the spring of 1961, were an interracial, nonviolent effort to protest the practice of segrega- tion. Setting out from Washington, D.C., on May 4, 1961, the Freedom Riders sought to actualize the decision in Boynton v. Virginia, which held that interstate passengers had a right to be served without discrimination, and to challenge the en- forcement of local segregation laws and practices. The Freedom Rides, organized by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Com- mittee (SNCC), and other devoted advocates, built upon the boycotts and ‘sit-ins’ demonstrating against Jim Crow segrega- tion across the South. The Freedom Riders themselves were black and white, often students and young people, and committed to the cause of nonviolent resistance. Along the way, buses were attacked and men and women were intimidated, arrested, and brutally beaten. The publicity generated by the courageous Freedom Riders as they faced continued violence and complicit local police drew the attention of the Kennedy Administration and Americans across our country. Through their defiant journeys, the Freedom Riders sent a resounding message to the rest of our Nation that desegregation was a moral imperative. The Freedom Riders also motivated and mobilized the next generation of civil rights leaders. Today, we remember the Freedom Riders for the sacrifices they made in pursuit of the rights we now enjoy. They showed how The best way people could work together across backgrounds and boundaries to hold America accountable. They showed that young people to predict the have the power to generate a movement for equality and steer the course of our Nation. Because of their efforts, and the work future is to of those who marched and stood against injustice, we live in a country where all Americans have the right to dream and choose their own destiny. create it. Learning from the past and incorporating it into the future... Peter Drucker

As seen on the map to the right, although the buses did not come all the way to California, that does not mean the people of California did not suffer from the same inequalities and preju- dices. Today, these injustices may not be so overt but this is why it is important to come out to the Candidate Forum and get involved in the Mira Mesa Town Council so that your voice is part of a better tomorrow for all Americans. Regardless of where our ancestors came from, we are Americans and united within our coun- try’s boundaries. Hunger, Poverty, Education, Equal Wages, Immigration, Social Media and Technological intrusions in our lives… these are the battle grounds of today and we all need to be heard! Encourage each other to share your concerns and voices at the Forum on April 7th and during each election when you will have the privilege to VOTE.
